Hi all! I have been using a Dell Dimension 9150 for 2 years now and plan to use it for another 1.5-2 years tops. I had recently upgraded it from 1 to 3GB RAM and thinking of upgrading the X600 Radeon installed to something like a 3850?? I don't play high end games a lot and if i do it's the low-mid range kinds (Diablo 2, Sacred, NVN2, Dungeon Runners, etc)and other than that i use my PC to watch videos on the net, DVDs, bring work home (non CAD/designer application) and that kindda thing. My plan is:
Get an AMD based quad processor
Get a crossfire capable mobo
Run Vista Home Premium OS
buy another 3850 later (if i want to play more advanced games)
upgrade my wireless g router to an N?
I am not a pro at assembling my own computer and am only recently keeping up and researching on hardware thanks to CNET ^^ Also one of the reasons i do not wish to change to a new computer immediately is because i do maintainance on my Dell rather regularly and for my needs it's still decent. That and i want to see Vista ironed out before i move away from XP. Is my assumption that since AMD has acquired ATI, an AMD-ATI rig would run smooth for its price range compared to say an Intel-Nvidia rig? Also is it true that if one does overclocking, performance is upped at the expense of durability? So what u gurus think of my rationale/plan? Thanks in advance to anyone who could advise me :P
Your concerns on upgrading are like everyone else's. However, you seem to be heading to a better system, but if gaming isn't a big reason, then don't build in that direction as you seem to be doing. Flat out, XP is simply the best gaming platform right now, Vista has too many headaches for gamers. I wouldn't count on "cross-fire" mtrbd. unless you want to replace your current and that alone means everything else has to follow in-line. But, as for upgrades, video and cpu is reasonable provided your current system allows it. As for "OC'ing, well that still a measure of the quality of the mtrbd. and the componets installed. Typical mtrbds. don't allow too much OC'ing as they want end-users to be stable and not trouble them with issues because they went beyond what the system was sold as. So, if you do buy a new mtrbd. and fits in your old OEM case or again buy new case, then mtrbd. and what it requires for your future needs is the basis of a real upgrade path. Any previous upgrades like video, etc. may not carry over(if?) you jump into newer tech that no longer supports older stuff. If you like, save-up and buy a 3rd part builders found in the mags and online for ideas of what you can build and/or order. Those systems will be more open to upgrades for even longer usage and/or enjoyment. Hope this helps...

Re the future ... too much will change between now and the projected time of future purchase to make any HW decisions.
When you begin the search nearer the time of purchase ...do consider
Intel. From what I've seen and read . . Intel is the clear choice now . . . lower power use, greater performance and probably lower heat.
VAPCMD
Awesome Willy and VAPCMD ^^ Ya i was planning to upgrade the RAM (done) and X600 to 3850 (pending) while mobo, etc would be on a new comp. Hmm i think you have a point with regards of predicting hardware even after a period of 1.5 years me thinks @@ Also i am counting on AMD quads to be finetuned from now to 1.5 years in the future hehe
