Yes, but you'd need to get some power adapters for it and find a NTSC TV to use it with. The power adapter wouldn't be too difficult to find, but the NTSC TV might be a tall order. Europe uses the PAL standard which is incompatible with NTSC.

If you had access to an HDTV set in England you could probably use it with that. Personally, I'd rather take a much less expensive and bulky portable game system with me. Never know when some airport employee may see a PS3 in your luggage and decide to help themselves. Make a little extra income selling it on ebay. The whole terrorism scaremongering tactic being used in the US and UK just makes it all the easier for someone to remove a "suspicious" looking bag without even being questioned.

I'd strongly suggest getting yourself a PSP or DS Lite and a few games. Or you could even pick up a used Gameboy Advance and some used games for it. I was just in the local GameStop store and they had a few Gameboy Advance (not the SP model) units for about $20, and what games they had ranged from about $5-20. A DS Lite will also play Gameboy Advance games, while a Gameboy Advance will play Gameboy and Gameboy Color games. So for a fraction of what the PS3 would cost to replace, you could pick up plenty of games to keep yourself occupied. If you're in London, you can even make a whole new game out of it, by positioning yourself in front of one of the numerous CCTV cameras they have all over the city, complete with speakers, and see if you can get any of the people monitoring those CCTV feeds to take an interest in the game you're playing.
