My kids bought the Wii on their own after considering the other choices. They worked hard to save the money up and seem quite happy with their choice from what I can tell.
They like the Mario games when friends are over. Have guitar hero and some shoot'um up, role-playing, and other games they play alone or against each other, etc. They really like the Wii controllers (I have fun watching them waving them around, wiggling, etc., too!)
Not something they do daily, but the Wii hasn't sat for weeks at a time either (like the Game Cube unit was).
Kids are 17 & 19 years old and they haven't out grown it a bit.
I got one last year for my 12 year old and he loves it and so do his siblings 21 and 19. We have Wii parties and I can't remember laughing so much as when we have a group of people in a bowling tournament or boxing match. Good luck finding one.
The Wii is great and all but if you are willing to pay the price for a Xbox or Playstaion and the monthly fee for the Xbox the ask him. Mabye he felt the wii was cheeper and you wouldn't buy the pricier ones. If he does want the Wii then get him it. The only problem is the wii is hard to find. As everyone already told you. The playstation is not that great for a kid, just because of the price and the games that are strictly on it are really violent. The xbox many people play online and there are tons of games. The wii is a very fun game, if he is only a child then he would not even relize the lack of games ect.. with the wii, and by the time he does there would be more out by then.
Im not trying to sound like Expert or watever. Just make sure he wants the wii over the others. If not the others are easy to find. If he really wants the Wii then you just got to find it. Ebay sells them but at a high price as much or more than the other two systems.
Personally I'd much rather get an XBOX 360. The Wii is ok but the Xbox has much better games and much better graphics.
good question, and believe me, if this could answered in proper equation then most would do the same.
however, my personal opinion will go with your brother in Law's suggestion. Wii as such is more fun since you physically involve in the game. And as most young would go with more fun rather than the quality of the game. in which case the Wii is definitely more suited to those who would love to have just fun minus the quality and the feel of the 1080p resolution stuff.
where as Xbox360 is more to do with gaming only as most games are easily available.
Ps3 is probably the only amongst which has all in built minus less titles on games. I would any day go for PS3 for the Music, on line interaction, gaming, watching Bluray movies (1080p), soring your family pictures or watching everyday videos at home.
Wii games are over simplistic, after 10mins game time your bored. Get a 360 with a game like Assassins Creed and tell him you couldn't get hold of a Wii, he will thank you in the long run. Also Wii grafics are horrible!
I have the PS3 and the Wii and am older than 12. First, you made a deal with your son, so you must honor that-- although it may be very hard to find a Wii right now.
The games that come with it are a lot of fun and are best played with/against a friend. But there are new games coming out all the time and they are excellent. Don't pay attention to people who say the graphics are horrible. It depends on the game-- some graphics are intentionally simple, and others are very good. They are never horrible. Get the Wii if you can get your hands on one-- you will be very happy you did-- and so will your son.
Get one for the family.
People of all ages are playing the Wii, its gameplay is innovating. For the first time in console history there are more female gamers who own a Wii then there are male gamers. Wii also attracts older gamers who otherwise would not be interested in video gaming. News reports of wii's in elderly care homes really stress Wii's appeal. The vast majority of Wii games are rated as being kid friendly with only a few exceptions. Wii games are also cheaper than the competing consoles.
Wii is not going to compete graphically with other systesm. However this is an argument that has been going on for a long time with PC versus Console gamers. Most games look better on a PC because a PC can be upgraded to keep up with technical changes. Consoles are fixed and you're stuck with the technology until the next playstation or xbox comes out. Both have decent specs, impressive when they first came out, but it won't be long till the average PC overtakes them. The only real reasons to consider the other consoles is for graphics, a specific game, or an HD player.
Wii is not a technical powerhouse. It is fun because the style of play is new. You move the controllers in three-dimensions, offering a variety of unique gameplay styles. In golf you swing the putter, you swing a tennis racket, you roll a bowling ball. These are things that are not possible with other systems, and if that is what he wants it's only possible with the Wii.
Wii involves more physical movement, which is good for the health of a child. You don't need to buy your kid a $600+ HDTV for him to take full advantage of the Wii, an old CRT set is enough. Sure, the whole high resolution from Xbox360 and PS3 sounds great- but you're not going to get it on an old television set. Whereas with the wii the difference would be nominal.
Consoles don't last forever. If this is the first one you're buying your child, odds are he's going to hit you up for another in 3-4 years. So if your worry is whether or not the Wii is going to last him from childhood to adulthood, none of the consoles would. It isn't that he would grow out of it so much as the technology becomes obsolete. It happens to all consoles. PC isn't as bad if you're tech savvy, but you still get stuck when critical parts are the ones that are obsolete, and you have to pretty much start over from near scratch.
The Wii is cheapest. The wii games are cheapest. The wii doesn't need an HDTV to take advantage of its specs. The Wii offers some physical activity while playing. The Wii games are the most kid friendly. Make him happy, save money while doing it, and worry about another console down the road. Otherwise you might get stuck with a PS3 or Xbox360 this christmas, and a HDTV on the next years list, otherwise that nice video card in the more expensive systems just go to waste. A TV can't display that level of resolution well. People might say oh it looks cool, but on a regular tv set it's a waste. No comparison. If it's for the HD players, bluray with PS3 or addon Xbox360, same issue. Use the money you save buying $50 games instead of $60-$70 games and put it towards the inevitable new console he'll as you for in three years.

Hey Rhonda!
My 14 year old has been asking for one as well! First, you MADE a DEAl with him, and as you said, he has held up his end of the bargain...Second, there was a report on the local news (WVEC), the other day that had senior citizens playing the Wii at their nursing home! They LOVED it! Now I have no clue if your son wants to play video games with gramma, but he may after playing against his friends. GOOD LUCK TRYING TO FIND ONE as well.
Merry Christmas....momei
get him the wii he may grow out of it but the other two systems have alot of their own problems as well so its really about seeing the expression on his face than which one is beneficial...
As a father I plan on trying to keep my promises. Especially when it's one that was quid pro quo as yours was. However, that technically means it's not a gift but payment. Nothing wrong with that but Christmas (at least for Christians) is about salvation by grace which means it was a gift not earned or expected and gift giving is a symbol of the same message. It's also a universal truth which is why Christmas traditions are older than the church but that's another topic.
So for what it's worth. You owe him a Wii, (my father never reneged on bargains like that ever) it's not a gift either which means you're Christmas shopping isn't done after you get it (that's also why you can justly ground him from it if his grades slip or what not), and your brother who thinks you should get him an XBOX or PS3 I think is just into first person shooters because that's the main thrust of those systems whereas Nintendo has a more targetted wider variety.
I work for Best Buy, and i can tell you in all honesty, that Wii systems are not easy to get, even for employees ! The supply from Nintendo is scarce, when we do get a shipment its maybe 50 and they are gone about 10 minutes after the store opens. and we never know when we are getting any shipments.!
So, if you promised him a Wii, this might be a good time to take him to your nearst Best Buy, and let him start playing with an Xbox360, which you can actually get. !
We bought our 12 year old the X-box 360 last year and he loves it. It is true the Wii is sterotype for being more young kid games and the X-box 360 and PS 3 are more hard core video games. The graphics on the Xbox 360 and PS 3 blow the Wii away. If you want a cheap HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player the Xbox and PS3 can also play these type of movies the Wii cannot. Overall you will not go wrong with whatever you get him. He will be happy. It maybe easier getting an Xbox or PS3 than a Wii. The Wii console is hard to find.
By the way my 12 year old also wants a Wii and a PS3,so whatever you get him he will probably want the others in about 6 months
As already stated, the example demonstrated is really more significant than superior graphics, extended functions, or aintaining continued interest. If later, another game turns out to be the superior console, for your family, you may pick it up with your parental integrity in tact!
*Now...not to be a Grinch...
but if Wii's are as hot there as they are here..to get one in 2007... COULD cost a good bit more OR may well be a Christmas miracle!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
HE is the true reason to celebrate!
