The Wii is the best!

by Ray - 12/14/07 7:15 PM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I'm 41, have advanced degrees in science and own a Xbox, Playstation and a Wii. Without question the Wii is the best! Super Mario Galaxy is an amazing game, much more captivating than Halo3!

to wii or not to wii

by agnew22 - 12/14/07 7:33 PM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Like Rhonda, my husband and I were in the same situation. I too was told that the kids would out grow the game. Most video games are mostly geared towards males. I have 2 daughters so it was a delema on what to do. I did a little research and found games that are geared towards girls. We decided to go with the Wii. Now to get one. I quickly found out that this happens to be the hottest Christmas gift this year. Yes there was none to be found. As both my husband and I work, we could never get to the store in the middle of the day to pick one up or stand in line for hours. Fortunately a supplier would put you on the list after you paid in advanced. I signed up and 3 days later when they came into town I received one. Now my hunt continues for the games for the Wii.

To Wii

by EDMARIEFAITHJULE - 12/14/07 7:36 PM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Rhonda,

I had the same dilemma a couple of months ago. I have 2 girls 4 & 9 and they start playing the Wii at my parents house. The game is really very family oriented, and fun not only to play but also to watch the people that play the game. At first I wasn't sure if I should buy one or not and finally we decided to get one, after waking up early Sunday morning and head to Toys R' Us, it was well worth it. If your son wants it and proved it to you by his good grades, get it. Even now, when I see my girls playing the Wii and seeing them moving around, I know they are doing a little bit of exercise and they are really bonding. I enjoy watching them playing the game. Good Luck on your decision.

Buy the Wii !!

by starz51 - 12/14/07 7:44 PM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My husband and I bought a Wii for our home so our grandchildren could play when they were visiting us. But we play it every week even when the little ones aren't here !! Our youngest daughter, who is 25, and her husband come by and challenge us to bowling, playing tennis, golf, the arcade games, etc.
And we really like it because it gets the kids off their "bottoms" and gets them moving around. Most video games only give your hands and fingers a work-out. My boss' son has a Nintendo and he complains how he sits for hours playing and never gets off the couch !!
We consider it a great investment since it entertains our youngsters from 5 years old, all the way up to us grown-ups(in our late 50's).

Xbox 360 is a better choice

by turtle117 - 12/14/07 7:55 PM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Nintendo has a few great exlusives lines like Metroid, Legend of Zelda and ok, Mario. These are great games with a particular style that could be an interest to anyone. A few other titles are great, as well. In a way, they are a shame to miss.

Beyond those, the choices for highly rated games seem to thin out quickly. If you like relatively simple games and have fun with activity or minigames you might be ok.

The Xbox 360 already has quite a lineup of games and it can play many of the older xbox games such as the original halo 1. The games available will have a wider range of genre.

Activity games are probably more limited on the Xbox 360 but Dance Dange Revolution or you guitar rhythm games are there -- and a bit more hip.

I looked at the forum posts here -- Its amazing how quickly and assuredly people suggested staying with the Wii. Wii fanboys abound and the current PG cast to the Wii hasnt escaped some peoples notice. Could you outgrow the Wii, yes. The range of Wii offerings will expand due to its ever increasing install base. Technically, the hardware is the most limted so your level of graphics will be capped but you dont need super graphics to make a great game (but it can help).

Nintendo Wii is notable in popularity and casual games.

The PS3 took some big risks and it may shine some day but immediately it doesnt have the catalog of games the Xbox 360 has.

An Xbox 360 would be a thoughful gift and you might offer to return it in exchange for a Wii -- when stock permits. The Valve's "Orange Box" or Halo series would be a good place to start for games.

I personally play PC games most of the time due to game style and the keyboard and mouse controls, but have an old GameCube and an XBox 360 for special titles.

Wii Wii Wii

by Freber - 12/14/07 8:18 PM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I'm just going to support what it seems like most people are saying: The Wii is unique console that allows fun gameplay for all ages. It is encouraging the kind of creativity in game designers that hasn't been seen since the early days of Nintendo/Sega/Atari, IMO. As others have pointed out, the typical Sony/Microsoft game has become very much in the hardcore gamer 'shoot'em up, warfare or sport genres. Rhonda, if you buy your son a Wii (provided you can find one - try some of the trackers online that will alert you when they're in stock at online stores - not at the rip-off $600+ bundle prices) and maybe Guitar Hero 3 - you'll make his Christmas!

RE Nintendo Wii Purchase

by khaecker - 12/14/07 8:24 PM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Rhonda,

I am retired. I have a son at 37 who still plays games. My daughter still plays at 28.

I bought a Wii to get fit. AARP wrote about this. 15 minutes of boxing is great cardio. This is included with the package. And there is more to come from Nintendo.

So choosing the Wii is really good for the whole family.

I am looking forward to early 2008 for an Agatha Christie Wii game. My daughter and I enjoy playing solve the puzzle type games together.

So if your son has the grades, the Wii is totally the right thing to do.

Hope this helps. Kathy

Wii is for everyone

by mgereau - 12/14/07 8:30 PM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I love my WII and everyone who tries it from kids to adults love the WII. My dad is going to retire next year and I'm going to get hime one when he does. He has a trick Knee and has not bowled in years. Thanksgiving day I brought my WII to the house and showed him how to bowl. He is going on 65 years old and picked it up in just a few minutes and was having the time of his life. Plus there are tons of retro games you can download. I've also just downloaded the internet channel and love the fact you can go online with the WII. It's just going to get better as Nintendo adds features. A great system and price that can not be beat. Just remember to hang on to the controller when you start having all that fun.

DA WII

by zeroski - 12/14/07 8:30 PM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The wii is very interesting and fun when we feel like playing on it. I don't find myself or my family using it, it is in the same entertainment center as all the other systems (I have ALL the other systems.. back to NES)... the kids 3 and 6.. still like the Game Cube the best. Well that and my multi arcade machine emulator.
I have not seen a game for the 360 that would be totally cool for a 12 year old.

Outgrow the wii? Thats just silly. Its a matter of keeping up with the jones'
He will want the latest "prostitute raper" from rock star of course, because his friends want it, because the news and advertising told them to, and it won't be released on the WII. That's not to say he out grew it.. its just different.
The wii doesn't have little kids games and the XBOX360 grown up games. the wii just doesnt have a whole lot of the raping, killing and sex. Most likely because it doesn't lend itself well to first person shooters.

The wii is good fun that the whole family can enjoy and probably the only really responsible next gen game system one could buy for a teen.

Definitely Wii

by psu_jedi - 12/14/07 8:31 PM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Rhonda,
As a 28- and 25-year-old couple, we can attest that you don't really outgrow the Wii. Both of us have been playing video games all our lives, and while we also have computer games and a PS3, the Wii definitely gets the most use. Sure, it doesn't have the cutting edge graphics or the "gotta have" games like Halo 3. But what it lacks in ultra-real graphics and computing power it more than makes up for in a little area we like to call FUN.

Definitely get the Wii, and your whole family will love you for it!
