CarPCs vs More conventional Car Entertainment systems
by tripzero - 12/10/07 11:48 AMI've heard CarPCs considered as "nonsense", but with more and more In-Car entertainment systems including PC-Like things like hard drives, USB, bluetooth, is it really nonsense?
I guess the main advantages of a CarPC would be:
-Customizable software choices
-Expandability (hardware, software)
-Price
Cons:
-Installation?
-Maintainance?

There are people who build CarPC systems and install them in their cars, but they tend to be custom jobs. There are plenty of advantages for functionality, such as having fairly large hard drives for music and video, very good music interfaces, and other features such as Internet access through GPRS.
But the CarPC option is best for people who like to tinker, and don't mind spending a lot of time tweaking the system and adding functionality. Also, most current CarPC systems use laptop hard drives, but these won't necessarily hold up for long in an automotive environment.
