the Wii

by Cynanne - 12/8/07 7:01 AM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My now 18 year old son waited in line over night to be one of the first to get the Wii and it has not been a disappointment....we regularly have 4-6 seventeen to twenty year olds gathered here playing Guitar Hero and tother games on it.... so I'm not so sure that you son will outgrow it so fast.... I must admit that I even enjoy playing it from time to time and Im not a "gamer", good luck finding one in stock though.

what should i buy

by ebelandry - 12/8/07 7:16 AM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

First and formost the Wii system seems to be sold out everywhere, so after all the research and if you find that you really set your heart on it, then it maybe hard to purchase, i know what frustration this can be when you are shopping for a child at Christmas.

My 9year old son has the Xbox 360 he also would love the Wii, but they are completely different gaming systems. My kids are getting the Wii this year (his grandmother stood in line early in the morning) to get one from a store that only got a limited few in stock. We purchased the Wii because it is more for Family Fun and it seems the girls like it as well as boys.

If this is what he asked for and he is 12years already i think he knows what he wants, remember he can also play nintendo game cube games on this system for more variety.

The Wii is safer

by ralphclark - 12/8/07 7:23 AM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

IF you get him an X-box or PS3 you could end up feeling concerned and frustrated with the amount of time he spends on it, it can be very consuming like that. From what I've heard about the Wii though, people tend to find it a bit less absorbing in the long run. And of course with the Wii you would be getting him exactly what he asked for, so you can't go wrong.

Don't Think So ...

by genek6 - 12/8/07 7:27 AM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The Wii may be designed for the "Tween" set, but it has universal appeal. I was just at a party where everyone was bowling on the Wii. The party was in a retirement community.

The only things your kids will miss is the blood and gore of the so called adult games.

In our family, the life expectancy of a game machine is about 5 years, so you may be looking for a game box upgrade at about the time your kids upgrade automatically.

To Wii or not to Wii?

by jordo11 - 12/8/07 7:29 AM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

This is a question that even I am not sure about. I am in the same boat as you but only for myself, do I buy a Wii or do I go with one of the more "Hardcore Gaming Counsels" and get an Xbox 360 or PS3. I have heard , especially on Cnet that the 360 and PS3 are really for Hardcore Gamer Fans and the Wii is just fun for all ages. The Wii does have some older titles such as Resident Evil 4 (rated M for Mature) but for the most part when you look down the list of Wii games they are Mario this or Mario that. Now when you look down the list of either the Xbox 360 or PS 3 you see lots of games like Halo or Assassins Creed. You will find there are more games rated M on the 360 or PS3 but if you put a limit on it then there are lots of racing games and Sports games rated E for everyone and T for Teen
If you are looking into buying this counsel for the future so he can use it down the line and right now then go with an Xbox 360. If you want something for right now go with the Wii, but with the price of gaming counsels I would suggest that you buy something for now and later too!

Get the Wii (if you can find one)

by Mike Pawluk - 12/8/07 7:48 AM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi Rhonda,

I know your brother-in-law probably has the best of intentions, but please consider these points.
Your son has been working very hard for and asked for a Wii. Not a Playstation or Xbox. On Christmas morning he wants to unwrap a Wii. I'm sure he'd *like* the other two offerings, but on some level he may feel let down, or feel you didn't hold up your end of the "bargain".
To compare the Wii to the competition is not a very good comparison. Gameplay is entirely different on the Wii, and by the Wii's own nature the games are more suited to getting up out of your chair and getting active. I'm not saying there is a Wii fitness craze coming but who knows? Wouldn't you rather your child had fun AND had the fringe benefit of possibly staying in better shape. I mean let's face it - standard gaming controllers turn people into potatoes of the couch variety.
Also, the Wii is FUN. It really is. Once you see how much fun your child is having, I'm sure all concerns about the unit collecting dust will quickly fade: in fact, you might be going out on Boxing Day to pick up a Wiimote for yourself!
So in summation, just get him the Wii.
Best wishes for the Holidays, and Merry Christmas!
Regards,

Mike Pawluk

Give the Kid what he wants!!!

by RayLBailey - 12/8/07 8:03 AM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

This is not an issue about you deciding what is best for the kid... It is about his desires. So what if he outgrows the Wii? I would hope you will outgrow the Xbox or other gaming consoles for reading and writing!

Look at it this way: If you give the kid what he wants and he outgrows it, and he has to pay for his own Xbox to replace it, then he learned a lesson. Don't look at it that your money is wasted on the Wii. You can always recoup some of it on Ebay!

If you don't give the kid what he wants, and you try to explain it to him, he will be resentful, and won't learn the lessons you learned. Let him learn through experience the painfulness of the technological upgrade Merry-go-round. Sooner is better than later!

Besides, you could keep the Wii and use it in your old age to play games with your son!

Wii vs.........

by powmowdaddy - 12/8/07 8:11 AM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hey, Rhonda:

I am not a gaming expert but we have a Wii and an XBox. When people say the Wii is more "for all ages", another way of saying it would be it's more "for the whole family".

So the question I'd ask you is this: Is the system something you want your son to use (primarily) on his own, or with friends? OR: Would you like a system that more readily facilitates you and other adults joining in the fun and interacting with your son, playing games with him?

I think the Wii is a better "family system", and the fact is that the more adult/mainstream/adolescent games are being written for the Wii, just not as prolificly.

Also: What's wrong with meeting his needs right now with the Wii, and adding another system to the family stall in a few years when he's really focused on games that are exclusive to XBOX 360 &/or PS3??

Good luck!!

David

by redvanmann - 12/8/07 9:17 AM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi there,
Do your son proud and get him the Wii, its what you agreed in the deal and he kept his side of it so far.
Its a great console and I know I got one, he will love it to bits, plus it keeps you fit with all the actions you do with it.

Go for the Wii (if you can find one...)

by Matthias99 - 12/8/07 9:22 AM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Everything I've heard from people who have the Wii is that it's pretty awesome. "Super Mario Galaxy" just came out and should keep most anyone occupied for quite a while, and there are a wide assortment of other fun games. You can also download old console games (at a cost of a few dollars apiece); these may have somewhat more value for someone older who remembers playing them when they came out, but even younger gamers may enjoy seeing how things were in the "good old days" on occasion.

Plus, he wants a Wii. Getting a different console might disappoint him.

Wii or PS3 or XBOX360?

by Daldidal - 12/8/07 9:30 AM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

PS3 and XBOX have games with more "blood n' guts" and more intense sequences than Wii, which is aimed more at pre-teens and older audiences. XBOX360 has a capability of being able to play with friends on-line (via internet) and PS3 has a built-n Blu-Ray DVD player for Hi-Def DVD's (only in Blu-Ray format though - they won't play HD DVD's).
Which system you get depends on whether your son is ready for more intense games or would prefer milder, but still fun, ganes. The Wii is great as you can actually interact with the game and be physically active, instead of sitting like a lump pressing buttons.
Word of caution though, the Wii is harder to get than hen's teeth right now (mailnly because Nintendo engineered it that way to keep the buzz about the Wii alive), unless you want to pay $500+.
If your son can wait until after Christmas, get one then as supply should pick up in the New Year.
Hope this helps and Happy Holidays!!

Rhondas reply

by neiliepoo - 12/8/07 9:31 AM In reply to: To Wii or not to Wii? That is the question. by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Well check this out miss, my friends and i did a servey to see which game we would draw to most. One had a XBOX 360, another had a playstation 3 and i had the Wii. At first we wanted to try each of them but as time went by, we played the Wii more. for one up to 4 plyers can play, the games were so fun even our parents and friends came over every friday evening to play. Thats just a few things. Well for the XBOX 360 it had the 4 controls but the games we got tired of so easily. Basically they were bad, dont get me wrong we bought alot of games for it, but we got bored and felt lazy. The playstation 3 was much better than the XBOX 360. The games had graphics and everything but it dug deep into our pockets. Some of the accessories we wanted wasn't here yet so time told for that one. Only thing i can say to that one is its best for one player. Well to tell the truth, the Wii we could never get tired of. The games we had was Wario smooth moves, Rayman raving bunnies,Mario party,Wii sports and zelda twilight princess. A suggestion u buy mario galaxy for the Wii for him. Thats what we tend to play more.
