I am 15 and at secondary school. I myself own a Wii and if I'm honest, I do not play on it, as I have been using an XBox since I was 9. It is only because of the fact that I have been used to playing Halo all my life that I cannot get into the slightly more juvenile swing of the Wii.
That said, many, many, many people in my year, and years all the way up and down the school have Nintendo Wii's. If I speak to anyone who is not an avid gamer about consoles they will immediately ask if I have a Wii, and state that they have one themselves.
The Nintendo Wii is an excellent introduction into gaming, and so if your son has not used another console alot before hand, this would be the perfect start. As for worrying about the 'growing out of it' thing, don't. I'm sure that if your son is asking for a Wii it is because all his mates at school are telling him how great it is. Even if the games do seem a bit young, who cares? If everyone is playing the same young games at perhaps an older age, then there is no shame in that. Most of my 12/13/14/15/16/17 year old friends own or have played on a Wii and loved it.
On a final note, it is possible that he will want to start taking gaming a little more seriously, at which point he may want to buy an Xbox or Playstation - but this will take a good while in any case, and therefore it is a good bet to buy this Wii. ![]()
It's like this:
Wii - Games in which you have to be more active - many sports games and Nintendo classics revamped. Younger games, more fun for the entire family. For the recreational gamer (and his parents, lol).
Playstation 3 - Maybe for the more 'executive' gamer, many owners are older rather than younger (because it's so ******* expensive). Games are a relatively good range of sport, driving, FirstPersonShooters and RolePlayingGames. Again, mostly for the people that can afford it, but mainly relies on Sony's HUGE fanbase. Most new gamers get crushed online unless they have had some good gaming experience. Not for the relative 'newbie'
Xbox 360 - For maybe the more 'hardcore' gamer thats been playing FirstPersonShooters all his/her life. For the people who want very competitive online play in a variety of games. Games are mostly as i said, shooters and action games. Most new gamers get crushed online unless they have had some good gaming experience. Not for the relative 'newbie'.
I hope that this helps aid your decision. ![]()

We are buying the Wii as a FAMILY present for our Christmas this year. Just to stress how much my family enjoys the Wii, this will be our ONLY present for Christmas besides stocking stuffers. My brother bought one last year and he and his whole family love it. He also bought an Xbox 360 at the same time, but only the older son enjoys playing that one. Whenever we go over to his house all 8 of us (4 adults and 4 kids--teens and preschooler) all play the Wii. My husband and I liked it so much that we decided to get our own this year for the kids AND for us. We like the Wii because it is more than a video game. By this I mean that we are actually moving around and doing things (dancing, bowling, hitting a baseball, pitching, etc. ALWAYS WEAR YOUR WRIST BAND!) I don't think your son would grow out of it any more than he would playing either of the other two. There are games for all ages. It comes with a sports package (the baseball, bowling, etc. that I mentioned above). We will also be getting the Super Mario Party 8. This is like an interactive board game and you do things in teams and alone to win competitions. If you don't have enough players, it generates them for the teams. It is harder for me to find stuff for my pre-schooler, but there is a lot out there. Mind you, the games are not cheap, but you can download many games from the internet onto your Wii (yes, it has internet capabilities) with Wii points and they are less expensive than buying the cdroms. I don't think you can go wrong with getting a Wii. I think your son would probably even like you playing along for the competition.
Hello. I have noticed that most all Nintendo products are family oriented; and while there may be a few games out there for hardcore gamers, most anyone can adapt to a nintendo game.
I don't own a X-box, and i have a PS2. Most all games for these platforms are "shoot'em up" games, racing games....games for real hardcore gamers. They also have more of a selection of games designed for mature adults. And, yet again, many of the games that you can purchase for the Wii can be purchased for the other 2 platforms (excluding Nintendo branded items of course).
Also for consideration is online gaming. If your son is wanting to play with friends online, the Wii is extreemly limited in that right now. I hear that the x-box scores points there. I'm not familiar enough with the PS series to make a conclusion on that. (note: His friends would need like-systems to play online)
I personally like the Wii best, but i've always been a Nintendo fan over the other 2 series. Many of thier games are designed for 4 player, and has a very limited amount of material that isn't suited for all ages. I'm not trying to play judge here, just my personal preference.
I don't know where those children come from who would "soon grow out of it." I have two sons (grown, married, with teen and pre-teen children) who each have a wii game and the only thing that the children grow weary of is trying to get the controls from their parents so they can play with the game. I wonder when the parents are going to grow out of it. It is also a game that the parents can play with the children if the parents are not poor losers.
If your son is asking for a Wii, I'd get him one. I've had one for a year now (I'm 32) and it's a huge misconception that it's only got games that are geared for very young kids or seniors. The truth is, that it's the one gaming console that offers the most choices to gamers of all ages and skill levels. That's why it's the most popular console out right now. Also, it's been a big hit as an activity that the entire family can enjoy because the unique controller and a number of group-centric games have made it easy for just about anyone to pick up and play right off the bat. Some great Wii exclusive games that your son would probably enjoy are Super Mario Galaxy, Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbados' Treasure, Metroid Prime 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. As for fun games that you may both enjoy, try WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Super Mario Party 8 or Rayman Raving Rabbids. The fact that it comes bundled with Wii Sports is also a nice bonus and it's a fun compilation of 5 games that are also pretty fun. I wish you luck finding a Wii if you decide to get one. I don't think you'll regret it if you do.
My son camped out overnight to get the Wii the first day of it's release last year. He and his friend play it all the time-they are all freshmen in college. He has the PS2 & Xbox 360 --but the wii gets more play by far. All his female friends like it and are competitive in the sports games. The internet functions are another plus .Another plus as a parent-I have not seen any violent games-I understand some are in the works.
When he was home for THANKSGIVING my 85 yr old mother and 9 y/o niece enjoyed it.
By far the most versatile system-The graphics may not be up to the PS3-but the fun factor far surpasses it
Rhonda, that Wii is a terrific game console, I bought it for a 12 year old boy and he really loves it. Maybe you could consider another game console at another time but getting him the thing he wants most is always a good idea. I can still remember when I was young and was disapponted a couple of time(the gifts I wanted were affordable) and always remember the disappointment
I'm 18 years old and own a Wii myself. I'm extremely happy with it. I know I'd get upset if my parents gave me an iPod instead of a Zune (vice versa). I'm just saying, it's what he wants and so far he's doing his part of the agreement. I'm sure he'll love it. ![]()
My initial suggestion would be, if you promised your son a Nintendo Wii then that's what you should buy for him, as he has kept up his part of the agreement. However, if you are concerned that the Wii may become obsolete to your son after a while, then why not ask him if it is what he'd REALLY like, or maybe if he'd prefer an X-Box360 or a PS3?
It's true that the range of games for the Wii are limited, especially when compared to the other 2 platforms, but if that's what he really wants then you should stick to your original agreement and buy it for him. Give him your thoughts on the matter, either from what you research yourself or from the advice given here, but I believe that the final choice should be his.
Miss.Rhonda it't true that the WII is for ALL ages. I terribly recommand you that you buy a WII because of the following:
1. You bought him an Xbox or Playstaion and he sees it and he will very likely say "WHY DID YOU BOUGHT ME A PLAYTION (Or an Xbox) I WANTED A WII!!" And he will not use the playtion (or Xbox) and then you wasted money for nothing.
2. Playstion or Xbox games might have violence, sexual behavior, slang language and things that are not suitable for him.
3. WII games are more fun and will make you child more active!
Thank you,
My son also wanted the Wii. I told him how difficult they were to obtain, and offered a PS3 or XBox if he preferred. He said he wanted the Wii, because he could get exercise while playing the system. I was fortunate enough to get one at Walmart, when a shipment arrived this week. They come in UPS, and there is no advance way of knowing if any are coming at all.
the ps3 is a bit more expensive... around 400... around the xbox. although the wii is kiddy, some games like red steel, call of duty 4, guitar hero 3, resident evil, they are extreme thrillers. even my 19 year old couzin has one and enjoys playing it. although if he is into teen games, get him the xbox.
the wii is full but for his age I would go with the XBox 360. It has more games and he will never grow out of it. the wii is a great family play system but he will want a 360 to really get a good gamong experience
I HEAR YOUR CONCERN. I THINK PLAYSTATION 2 IS GREAT. IT HAS THE GUITAR GAME TO PLAY THAT IS AROUND $90.00 CDN AND THAT SEEMS TO BE A HIT RIGHT NOW. MY SON (22) HAS HAD HIS PS #2 FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS AND HAS NEVER EVER MENTIONED OF CHANGING (SURPRISED ME). CHECK ON KIJIJI, OR PAWN SHOPS, SOMETIMES U FIND THEM CHEAPER WITH A FEW GAMES WITH THEM AND BUY THE GUITAR THING AS A BONUS!!!
GOOD LUCK AND MERRY CHRISTMAS.
KEL
Woah, please don't use CAPS for your posts. It's really hard on the eyes and it's the internet equivalent of screaming at us.
-Thanks
