College Student camcorder

by KeeganHill - 12/4/07 4:59 PM

I'm looking at getting a personal camcorder. Good video quality is my main concern and a price under $350 dollars would be preferred. I need a camcorder that can zoom into objects that will be at a max of 7 meters away and not give me a pixelated image. I saw the Samsung SC-MX10 and was wondering if it's worth the money?

-Import Times not important
-I have external hard drives for saving all information
-Rewritability is preffered in order to save money on supplies.
-I can import through Firewire or USB.

Any camcorder that displays a pixelated image when zoom is used probaly was using digital zoom. As you have discovered, digital zoom is useless - unless you want to call the captured pixelated image "art". While you did not provide us any information on what it is you will be capturing to video, I will use my son's experience as a guide - he's in his 3rd year at college... He took my Canon Elura 60 to school and is having a lot of fun with it... and is also using it for classwork (he's an animal sciences major).

The Canon ZR800 and 850 are miniDV tape based camcorders and video is transfered using Firewire. They can take stills, too (transfer is done via USB). The ZR800 is preferred because it has an external mic jack. This would allow you to place a mic (wireless?) at the subject location (7 meters away) and still get good audio.

Reusing miniDV tapes is not recommended - tapes can hold 1 hour of video and are less than $3 each - I hope this is not too much of a burden - it is the only requirement these cams do not meet for you.

You will also probably want to invest in an optional high capacity rechargeable battery and a tripod or monopod (when fully zoomed, it is impossible for normal people to remain still/steady for very long (30 seconds?).

Good luck! Learn lots! Be careful - and have fun!... yes, you *can* do both.

I'll be shooting videos of my friends and I for action/comedy videos. I think the canon 850 sounds like a perfect camcorder. What is the negatives of rewriting over MiniDV?

$3 dollars isn't to much.

pro video folks (friends of mine), I just never have... do a search using "reunse miniDV tapes" and see the arguments pro and con.
