All dressed up and no place to go

by Catgic - 1/31/07 5:08 AM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

No self-respecting techno-geek, would queue up in a long line out in the winter cold waiting to be the first to get their hands on this megablivet of zeros and ones. There were no lines at midnight at Best Buy, et al because Vista is much ado about nothing --- nothing worth waiting in line in the cold for.

I had great hope that Microsoft’s five years of code banging on Vista would have delivered more than a Microsoft Patch Tuesday XP SP3 Update dressed up in a $250 - $275 Vista Suit(e). Vista has great marketing and is all dressed up in nice packaging, but it has no place to go --- on my machine, anyway. It will not go on my current, personal machine because I do not need any new Vista Micro[Mega]SLOC induced episodes of BSOD or freezes.

Now that Microsoft has its 40 million lines of WIN XP Pro OS code reasonably cleaned up, patched up and tweaked up to SP2++, I will be sticking with running WIN XP on my current Dell XPS “Blue Cube Mini-Cray” personal machine until Microsoft no longer supports it.

As regards Vista installations on future computers of mine, if my next personal computer is a PC, I probably will buy it with Vista Ultimate because of WWW and global business apps compatibility considerations. However, it is likely that my next personal machine will be a Boot Camp implemented dual-boot Windows/OS X Intel-based Mac. JP B-)

Will you be installing Windows Vista?

As your newletter observed, I had figured out that VISTA is noting more than a 'glitz' cover with fancy 3d and transparent icons. What does that do for the user? W/o security updates it is worth nothing and not a reason to suffer through an update or new system on new PC.

I would be happy with the 3.1 gui

by Bageech - 1/31/07 5:34 AM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I saw a presentation by a Microsoft rep on Vista and wonder why MS has to keep changing the GUI. I would be happy if the GUI had never changed from 3.1. In fact I liked the 3.1 file manager a lot better than the windows explorer. I have gotten use to the changes in the GUI that MS has instituted over the years. I just bought a new computer with XP professional so that I would not have to buy a Vista computer.

service pack vista

by zclayton2 - 1/31/07 5:40 AM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

The more I read about the problems with Vista the more convinced I am that with this release, Mikrosoft has jumped the shark for software. It is a release that, by any report I have seen, has questionable utility in terms of upgrades, hardware requirements, user configurability, zero legacy tolerance, malware prevention issues built into the OS instead of an eco-niche solution, and not much in the way of gui enhancement. I mean really, the biggest selling point I hear touted is the Aeroglass interface and how does that really impact the work I do on the machine vs the expense of the hardware required to make it functional? Ooooh, shiney.

I've installed Linux and am investigating VMs to use the few M$ programs that don't have an alternative, mostly for games. I may just have an isolated machine w/o a net connection for that.

Been Using Vista for Two Months and Loving It

by im4nits - 1/31/07 5:49 AM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I installed Vista Ultimate on my Tablet PC right after it was released to manufacturing. While the architecture of my tablet is older and doesn't support Vista's glitzy Aero-Glass graphics, I still find the OS to be very appealing and in most ways a significant improvement over Windows XP. The OS is extremely stable and I can think of only one driver that I've had problems with (not major). The tablet functionality under Vista is orders of magnitude better than XP, i.e., improved inking responsiveness and handwriting recognition. Vista's integrated search, though not perfect, is a vast improvement over either XP or the various third-party desktop search bolt-ons (e.g., Google Desktop, Yahoo Desktop, etc.). In short, there is no way I would go backwards to XP. I'd lose too much functionality and productivity. As to the suggestion by some to wait for Vista, Service Pack 1 before migrating, I say "balderdash"! If you have the requisite hardware platform (i.e., Pentium 4, 1GB or more of RAM, and the necessary free hard drive space), there is no need whatsoever to wait. All you'll be doing is denying yourself a better user experience.

Probably won't upgrade until my XP system needs to be rebuil

by sliberty - 1/31/07 5:50 AM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

XP has been a real workhorse for me. Is it perfect? No, but neither will Vista be perfect. I don't feel that I am lacking anything right now that Vista offers, so I won't be rushing to upgrade. Down the road, if I upgrade my hardware, or if my existing environment becomes corrupted enough to require a rebuild, then I suppose I'll go with Vista. But there is no hurry.

Why should I buy Vista?

by cracker39 - 1/31/07 6:11 AM In reply to: Probably won't upgrade until my XP system needs to be rebuil by sliberty

I've built my last 3 PCs. On the first two, I used Windows 98SE and it worked great. I resisted putting on XP Pro until I built PC number 3, and I'm satisfied with it so I don't plan on buying Vista...why should I? First, money...Besides the cost of the OS, I'd have to buy a new graphics card and more memory for Vista to work properly. Second, I'm not a hard core geek...I don't need all the latest bells and whistles. Third, peace of mind...I don't need the problems that go with a new OS until the kinks are worked out. In the next year or two, I may buy a notebook as I'm thinking of doing some traveling. If it comes with Vista, then I hope it's a stable OS by then.

Never...

by mhersh - 1/31/07 5:56 AM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

You'll have to pry my Macintosh from my cold, dead fingers. Why on God's green Earth would I want a pseudo-copy of Mac OS X? I can't believe people are still falling for this trickery.

Do some research

by Ed-duh-win - 2/2/07 4:06 PM In reply to: Never... by mhersh

If you've done some research you'll find that most of the claims by Mac fanboys are false - Vista had many of the features of Mac OS X Tiger even before Tiger was released - meaning Vista had them first. Like search to name one. Besides, Mac OS X theme is predominantly white with blue accents default - Vista theme is predominantly black with pearl effects on whatever colors there are...and I'm do believe that white and black are totally opposite. Oh and icons are totally different too.

sorry...

by Mac OS XP - 12/3/07 4:06 PM In reply to: Do some research by Ed-duh-win

I'm sorry to tell you this, but anything new in Vista from XP, meaning gadgets, aero, LIVE SEARCH, glass, etc., was in Tiger, which was made years before Vista. I'm no fanboy, but I can see what's what. And the Mac UI is much more usable than Vista.

To some degree One has to agree.

by kjdinoc - 12/3/07 5:01 PM In reply to: (NT) I disagree. by Me, Myself and You

Coming from a die hard Microsoft fan I agree that in many areas Apple has left Microsoft in the dust when it comes to O/S development.

That said....I bought my neighbor kid a MacBook for mowing my lawn and to help him get through college. He has it here all the time and as far as I can tell my Vista machines do much more than the Mac. The Mac looks beautiful, but when it comes down to running the Business Applications I use and even the media capabilities i.e. Media Center I love, my Vista machine comes out on top.

Vista???

by gruetters - 1/31/07 5:59 AM In reply to: Will you be installing Windows Vista? by Marc Bennett Moderator

By the poll results so far, I'd say people are finally smartening up to MS's boys and letting them hang until the hype is proven (or otherwise) by the not so smart gung ho types out there who haven't learn their lesson yet.
