Has ANYONE truly verified this?

by tcardone05 - 11/30/07 8:52 PM In reply to: CNet Gamespot fires editor over Eidos threat? by linkbeat

I'm starting to reach the irritated state. No one, other than this "anonymous tipster" has said that this was for political reasons. The written review was posted to GS on November 13th. I know it's been a holiday week, but if there was this much pressure, what took 16 days to fire him? The video was pulled on the 19th, and then Eidos supposedly applied the pressure. It's been ten days since, and then they fire him? ***? The 19th was monday of Turkey week, now it's Friday of the week after. Six working days to be fired, and now it's sudden? Or maybe it was something else, perhaps logically, and i've yet to see an argument that says this. I'm not siding with GS or Jeff, they're both awesome, but did anyone think? GamePolitics has a little: http://gamepolitics.com/2007/11/30/free-jeff-gerstmann/

It has been mentioned....

by Akyan - 12/1/07 4:30 AM In reply to: Has ANYONE truly verified this? by tcardone05

that they did not want to fire him over it before all the work was done for the major reviews were done before Christmas in case there was a staff walkout/strike. What truth there is in that I don't know, just what I have heard in the monster thread on the topic on NeoGAF.

The ad campaign was pulled the day he got fired.

There is no question, he was fired over his reviews.

CNET will loose credibility over Jeff Gerstmann's firing

by joaobeltrao - 12/1/07 6:08 AM In reply to: ad by kbsmoker

CNET fires Jeff Gerstmann because the advertiser didn't like his review?
Oh my! This is really bad for CNET's credibility

Thank you for posting this.

I was thinking of picking that one up. But the reason I'm not going to now is not because of the firing but after seeing a few more reviews (not just the Gamespot one) I'm agreeing that this one is destined for the 9.99 discount bin. And even that may be too much to pay.

I think we can agree there are MILLIONS OF BUCKS at stake so the hype machine will be in full mêlée mode.

That's why.....

by Magishine - 12/1/07 4:57 PM In reply to: CNet Gamespot fires editor over Eidos threat? by linkbeat

....you shouldn't rely on just reviews for purchases. ESPECIALLY video games. If I want an opinion on a game, I'll usually go to gamefaqs.com and read the reader reviews. They give me a good idea of what a game is like.

To fire someone for doing their job and talking about what they think of a game is just crazy. Most people know that reviews tend to be the opinion of one person anyway.

CNET needs to do something, quickly

by Wilf_Brim - 12/1/07 5:06 PM In reply to: CNet Gamespot fires editor over Eidos threat? by linkbeat

I'm glad that there is (what in my opinion) is justified outrage here at the actions at Gamespot last week. I did something I normally don't do: listen to Friday's podcast early (normally I'm a day behind: listen to them when I work out, so I'd hear Friday on Monday morning). There was the little "we can't talk about this" line, and the link the the editorial policy in the show notes.

From everything that has leaked, this was the case of big CNET being unhappy about a review posted by Gamespot and getting the guy who wrote it fired. This was a review which 1) had undergone the normal editoral vetting process and 2) was completely in line with all other reviews at other sites.

This stinks. Badly. Everyplace (Digg, /., etc) is buzzing about this. Tycho and Gabe weighed in on Friday:

CNET needs to fix this, right now. I really like some of the CNET content, BOL especially. But I cannot continue to support an organization that acts in this way.

Getting crazy

by linkbeat - 12/1/07 6:54 PM In reply to: CNET needs to do something, quickly by Wilf_Brim

Thanks for chiming in Tom. I have nothing but the most respect for you guys, and LOVE BOL. I realize that you can't really comment on the subject, but I hope that internally Cnet employees won't put up with this kind of agenda. I like knowing that I get the "real deal" when it comes to tech reviews (gaming included.)

If you haven't seen what this guy looks like, check out this:

http://www.imediaconnection.com/profiles/iMedia_PC_Bio.aspx?ID=3346

This story is circulating across the internet like a wildfire. I hope this guy gets what's due.

P.S. Is it just me, or does this guy look like a car sales manager. You know, the guy that tries to convince you that he's losing money on selling you a car. Scumbag.

oops

...referring to the meathead that did the firing. I didn't make that real clear.

Don't bash the guy on his looks...

by indy1333 - 12/3/07 10:30 AM In reply to: Getting crazy by linkbeat

...but on what he does. We have more than enough reason to not like this guy, without descending into the juvenile "He looks like a scumbag, so that makes him one." (that's also really bad logic) The more legitimate and relevant we keep our arguments and rants, the more likely we are to be listened to.
