Well my 3rd 360 bricked up on me and waiting for the "coffin" to come in but going to go ahead and get an Elite.
Question 1= I heard I need to look for a certian Lot number and make sure it is rated for 175 wats in order to make sure I have the cooler chip??..Anyone know about this??
Question 2= What do I need to trasfer my data from my 20g HD to my 120g HD??
Well, if you ask me, the lot number is a good idea, but the rest of it sounds like a bunch of crap. If you get a pretty recent lot number, odds of it suffering from the overheating problem that has plagued the 360 is LESS likely to occur. However, I don't recall hearing anything about Microsoft having solved the problem yet, but then they're still refusing to admit there even is a problem, so kind of hard to have a solution to something that doesn't exist.
You need some kind of special program, capable of reading the Xbox 360's filesystem to transfer data from one drive to another. Probably the best way would be to back up saved games and what not onto memory cards, and just forget whatever else is on there. That would avoid a whole lot of hassle in tearing apart the 360 units to get at the hard drive (and you need a special tool to do that anyway), putting it into an external enclosure or some such, copying the data you want to another hard drive, then putting the 120GB 360 into the enclosure to copy the data onto it from the temp storage space on your computer's hard drive. Or sticking the drives into your computer in lieu of an external enclosure. The cost of a 64MB memory card doesn't seem that high when you figure all the hassle it will save.
Look for units with the HDMI port. From what I read the units with HDMI are more recent builds and have the newer 65nM CPUs.
As to transfers, I'd google for that info.

Along with the HDMI port and smalled chip size, MS redesigned the heatsink arrangement to include a more efficient heatsink that should curb all the overheating issues.
I'm actually hoping my 3rd 360 dies in the next few months so that I can send it in for repair and get back one with HDMI, new chip size, and new heatsinks.
I agree with the last post. The units with the HDMI are part of the new lot. However, Microsoft will be sending you a refurb unit identical to the one you sent them. So unless, you have an HDMI port already, you're out of luck. As for the transfer, They will send you instructions with the new unit or you can download them from xbox.com. Click the support link.
The elite comes with a transfer cable and instructions on how to transfer files. From what I hear it's pretty simple. Also, in case your elite doesn't include a cable ( I see no reason why it shouldn't) Microsoft has stated that a transfer cable is free to anyone upon request.
Ill have to check my box again to look for the trasfer cable,,there was something in there but wasnt looking to hard...I ended up getting an Elite lot #745 and 175wats. And I have to say it runs ALOT quiter than my old one.
