how much did you pay for your latest laptop

by lynjs - 8/5/07 4:12 PM In reply to: How much did you pay for your latest laptop? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I would have paid almost $2000 for it, but I decided to get just another desktop because of limited budget. I went to both the Dell and HP homepages and tried to configure a desktop to my specifications. I couldn't because I barely got half when I noticed the laptop was at $1800 on both sites. I just went to HP and got the a1750y series desktop and called it a day. At barely over $600, it was a good bargin.

As for a laptop in the future, I'll probably get one later through Walmart's after thanksgiving sale or I'll some more funds and get one via hp or sony.

I don't have a laptop yet, but I'm very close to getting one; in two weeks. Then, I'll spend about $1500 CDN on the laptop.

Laptop Deals - Toshiba, MacBook, HP

by skitherockies - 8/16/07 12:30 PM In reply to: $ paid for laptop by jgely000

I bought a Toshiba A135-S4527 for $585 from Circuit City back in May 2007. Intel 2080 Duo Core, 120 GB, 1 GB RAM, Vista Premium, 15.4" widescreen. It essentially was a "free upgrade" from a 20 month old HP ZV5000 I sold for $475 (what a heavy tanker that machine was), plus a Toshiba laptop I found dumpster diving and sold for $150.00.

In November 2006, I got a black MacBook MA472LL/A for $1199, also from Circuit City. That machine was 2.0 Ghz Intel, 512 mb, 80 GB drive, superdrive. That was right when the slightly faster newer models were introduced.

Interestingly I have a couple of HP dv8000's with the 17" widescreen purchase about 20 months ago. Those equivalent models have not dropped as rapidly as 15.4" screen machines, only about 15% less than before, $850 today vs. $1000 +/- a year ago.

Acer 5570-2977 I paid $449.00

by inventivemind - 8/30/07 3:08 AM In reply to: How much did you pay for your latest laptop? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Yep, I got it on that one week sale of $150.00 off "instantly".. No rebates on this, you save the money on the spot and with tax it's like $487.00 or something very close give or take some change. So how does it work? I thought the specs were great for the money, dual core Pentium 1.7Ghz with a gig of ram maxing out a 4GB's?? Wow that's a lot of memory people!! I remember my old desktop.. I thought I was all bad putting in a 64mb Chip upping it to 96mb's Wow 4Gigabytes seems astronomical. Anyway the laptop seems par with most laptops for basic usage.. most people use their computers to check email, to send email, to watch the funny videos, to read the news, see the news, hear the news I mean this laptop does all that with ease.. HOWEVER!!! I have a major CON: on this laptop and tomorrow I am going back to the Staples where I got this baby from and am inquriing into whether or not I got a lemon or if all these Acer 5570-2977's have the same problem. So what is the problem? It's the audio. I can't hear anything from the speakers at all! I tried them out on Youtube and couldn't make out a word and all the volume's were maxed the windows volume, the youtube volume the whole mixer was maxed and I even went into sound in control panel all maxed out and I can't hear anything. I tried to play Aol's radio, couldn't hear the singer sing. So, that's about it the audio on my personal laptop is really deficient in decibal levels but I can't say for sure yet if mine is a defect or if makers of this laptop were all wearing Whisper 2000's when they set the volume level in the software.

Anything else? Well the keys stick a little by that I mean when you type and I press pretty hard.. there's been this thing where letters don't show up until I go back and press it down again.. this happens alot with words that have double letters like the word 'letter' two t's and I had to go back twice to add that second 't' despite having pressed it twice the first time around.

one tip I came across this one simply by poking around. Go to control panel, Power, go to Acer Power or something like that it's the last hotlink on the left grid, go into that and you'll see power settings for battery and plug.. I was surprised that the 'plug' settings for brightness were set rather low as well as for 'cpu' so I maxed them both out and now I've beautiful bright display and a faster computer all around.. wow these keys are blanking out on me alot as I type this may be a problemsome keyboard..

I recommend a chillpad on this one as even with one I feel some slight heat on the palm rest right side, but not too bad with the chillpad, haven't tried it without chillpad.

Battery is on lame side about hour and half movie time, lucky me I rarely use battery.

That's it for now because as I read this critque back it sounds like this laptop is filled with problems but I like it alot and I feel that for the money it's going to be Great once I break it in!! I'll write another thread tomorow after I request to swap my present ACer out for another due to speakers being so low.

I'd buy this one again no doubt the price is irrestible and I have a great technological product in my possession.

It's my first laptop, but........

by catdaddy32 - 9/27/07 5:22 AM In reply to: Acer 5570-2977 I paid $449.00 by inventivemind

Some of you may say I don't know what I am missing, but for me, the ACER Aspire 5570-2977 has (so far) fulfilled my expectations and even exceeded them in some cases. The price was right - $449.00 with instant rebate and the performance is definitely right on the mark. My only criticsms of the notebook are it's lack of software and the pitiful speakers

Post 164 of 179

I agree!

by Mrsone - 12/1/07 7:28 PM In reply to: It's my first laptop, but........ by catdaddy32

I agree with your post. This laptop is not a powerhouse gaming laptop, but for the average person, this is more than enough speed and power to take care of computing tasks with ease. I have also noticed the keys sticking a little, but then I noticed the same problem with my Mom's Compaq laptop as well. Maybe it is a laptop design issue or something in the OS?

There is not much software that comes with it, but then again, I don't need trial software that I will have to buy to get the full use of, and I also don't need bloatware. The speakers on this laptop are a little pitiful; they don't give powerful sound and the audio is a little metallic sounding. But for the price, I can't really complain. I think that this is the least expensive laptop that runs Windows Home Premium that I know. Overall, I really enjoy my Acer. I like the no-nonsense utilities that come with it; you can change the boot order right from within Windows! GridVista is pretty cool, too, and the Wi-Fi antenna is really amazing. I can pick up my neighbor's wireless networks!

My three qualms with this laptop are that first, the bottom of the laptop by the left side gets hot if you leave it on for an extended period of time. Second, if you turn the volume up high, and your hand or the cover of the laptop comes over the left speakers, you will hear a deafening high pitched noise. Third, if you run the laptop on just battery power, you will hear a high pitched noise that is faint, but discernable, as well. That is the most annoying problem that I have with this laptop. But for the price, I really am not going to disown it over that.

I love the size and the features packed into my Acer. Overall, a great value for the price, despite a few quibbles.

THANK YOU!

Thank you for your excellent post. I followed your advice, and to clarify, the settings that you mentioned are found in Acer ePower Management. If you left the widget for this on your desktop in Windows Vista, you can get to the settings from there. I also was shocked when I saw how low the CPU settings were. I wonder why the factory set them so low. I maxed mine out too, and now I see the difference. It makes a huge impact on my eyes; now I can see the bright colors easier! And the battery life is rather poor. I am also a rare battery user, so I guess it comes with the territory. Thank you!
