Access Denied when installing certain apps on Windows XP

by learnerplates - 11/29/07 1:54 AM

On 2 occasions now separate installations have failed for my on my XP machine, XP 2002 Service Pack 2.

I think the problem has been caused originally because my machine's XP installation was imaged from another identical machine.

The 2 applications failed with similar errors "Access Denied". I presume this is access denied to certain registry entries.
The 2 applications that that failed to install are IE7 and a custom MMC Snap-in.

Does anyone know how I can fix this?
Is there a tool out there that anyone can recommend to fix the registry?

tell us more about this; "my machine's XP installation was imaged from another identical machine".

Where is that other machine now? Still in use?

original user can install on imaged machine!!!!

by learnerplates - 11/29/07 5:28 AM In reply to: Also by MarkFlax Moderator

I'm logged in as Admin and can install lots of apps but not IE7, mmc 3.0 and my custom snap-in to mmc.

The original machine works fine, we've lots of development software installed, my original OS had to be reinstalled twice, the second time I decided to get an image from a colleagues machine instead of reinstalling from scratch.

The original machine can install IE7 and works perfectly besides, also of note the adminsitrator on that machine can install without issue on the my machine (which was imaged from their machine!!!!)

Another user tried to install using the machine that uses the image and has also failed, we both failed to install on an second machine that was created from the image.

Windows has been activated.

I've been trying to add a snap-in to my mmc and getting the following error in my eventviewer, this is also a syntom of the same issue I fear

I'm concerned, and I will tell you why

by MarkFlax Moderator - 11/29/07 5:36 AM In reply to: original user can install on imaged machine!!!! by learnerplates

"The original machine still works fine".

This seems to me that you have two computers both using the same XP. Are you using the same license/key for both computers? How does Microsoft view this if you are?

What am I missing here? Your two posts do not explain.

That's proper.

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 11/29/07 6:27 AM In reply to: Access Denied when installing certain apps on Windows XP by learnerplates

I see why. It's not a clean install but some clone. The fix is NEVER a sure thing. But did you???

1. Give permission to your selected account in the register to all keys?
NO!! I will not detail how to do this here. It's an advanced item with repercussions that I feel the person who does this must do the research first so they know all the ins and outs.

2. Take ownership of ALL FILES on the hard disk?

Again, NO!! I will not detail how to do this here. This is another area you will find quick answers if you look for them.

ie7 is installed but not my snapin

by learnerplates - 11/29/07 9:40 AM In reply to: That's proper. by R. Proffitt Moderator

I've managed to install IE7 by first acquiring a new Product ID and reactivating, along with changing the Ownership of Registry and harddisk files (ownership to the administrator group, it worked for most settings and files).
I'm not sure which one of these resulted in the successful installation.
I still cannot reinstall mmc 3.0 or add my custom snapin.

I see that MMC 3.0 has heavy reliance on NET 2.0. So there can be "issues" with NET 2.0 registration or more. You should explore that area if not take the shotgun and try to uninstall, reinstall NET 2.0.

This is not an offer to fix your oddly installed OS. The path you chose to get this OS on this machine is one that I know is full of thorny issues. I would never do that.
