I'm very careful with what I put on my machines, so I'm confident using a free program. Also, I needed something that wasn't a memory hog and AVG was the best for this, taking less then 1.5MB. I think there's an option to load more things to memory to speed up the virus guard, if necessary.

I tried Panda and it was absolutely horrible, would never go back to it no matter any changes they made. Slowed the computer down, didn't catch a bug that was on the computer. When I tried Zone Alarm, which is/was rated highly on CNET, it found the virus that Panda missed. Been happy with it ever since.

Well, I have 2 PC's that I change from McAfee to Norton's. One is working with no problem, but the other I am getting rid of, nothing but problems. Don't know why, and have been on the phone with Tech support and they can't help me. So for that one I am going to find something else besides Norton or McAfee. McAfee gave me problems with both that is why I had changed. I also have a new laptop that came with Norton's and so far no problems.

It's free with my Comcast ISP even thought I'm paying 42.50 for their service. Maybe it's not so free. Anyway it seems to be doing a good job. Elmo5

McAfee, Micosoft & Comcast kept passing the buck leaving me on the phone for hrs. till we finally realized we had been hit by a few vicious viruses which McAfee missed & no one had a patch for yet. Later in life I get a HP Home Editon Desk top. McAfee missed the virus AGAIN & I ended up w/ the crappiest tech support who didnt tell me to turn off my system restore, etc. The 2nd tech was very upset at the 1st tech & HP ended up having to send me new CD's for a system recovery. I was having a heart attack b/c it was right in the middle of finals & I couldnt even get in my computer by the time I hung up w/ the 1st McAfee Tech! So HP rushed it & it came the next day. I'm now using Trend Micro Security Suite 2007. It slows down my pc while scanning but it catches the bad guys, has security for web browsing & email. Im going to try ZoneAlarm when my yr is up. I hear it's real good.

by randysvh - 11/25/07 3:37 AM In reply to: no, no not McAfee!!!! by sheba94601It is true that both Norton and McAfee are both a waste of time. i am a computer technical consultant for now 30+ yrs and can tell you that i now use and put on my customers systems, Avast anti-virus, and Comodo Firewall, which are both free. i even replaced Trend Micro when it took a business customer computer to a screeching halt. When i installed the Avast it found a couple of viruses that Trend Micro did not find. basically save your money for the next year and use the two i recommended above. i do use other products, but that is a longer list or you can write to me directly.

After reading reviews from PC World magazine, I downloaded & installed Avast. It is free, seems to do a good job, & updates are frequently downloaded.

The enthusiasm for Avast makes me want to download and try it. ZoneAlarm Pro has worked well for me for 4 years - killed many a virus.

ZoneAlarm Security Suite is the best for my money (at home). It has a great firewall, decent AV and AntiSpyware combination, along with other features. I used to be a Symantec snob, but I do not like their [Symantec's] firewall product at all. And you have to have at least the triumvirate - Firewall, AntiVirus, and AntiSpyware, to operate on the Internet in relative safety (if you can call it that).
I'm running Windows Live OneCare on the kid's PC, which, for the price (free), was fine for that machine. They don't have email, just games and approved (by me) websites.
I've used CA AV and I've demoed BitDefender and Trend Micro. I wasn't too impressed with any of them, either because of interface, feature set, or functionality.
I still consider Symantec and McAfee to be the standard by which all others are measured.
For corporate AV, I'm still on board with Symantec.

All my family has used eset-nod32 the past 2 yrs. It ranks highest on antivirus reviews, runs smoothly in the background,it is slightly less user friendly than some others, but that is not a problem because it functions so well, and is reasonably priced. I have never had an infection since using it.

FIRST Norton's and MC Afee both are HOGS. I have gotten three free PCs from family and Friend from the fact that Norton's and Mc Afee are system recourse HOGS. So in a way I am grateful for those two as they have given me three PCs that are only two to three years old. I offered to fix them like about a dozen other family and friends that had the same problem but they wanted a reason to upgrade and still run the hogs on those PCs. They did listen to me and got 3 gigabytes of ram on them. One gig for Vista and One gig for Norton's and one gig of ram for the rest of the programs. The ones I fixed were easy, put Nod32 on them and they ran like the wind.
Nod 32 owner is part of the experts that are leading the charge to deal with the Bot-Nets and more. REMEMBER the RATINGS done by many a review rate Anti-Virus programs MORE for their beauty than for their ability to keep root kits and spyware and viruses off your pc! Personally I do not think beauty will protect my PC!
I am now using my old PC that uses a 750 Mhz Pent. chip and Nod32 runs so well on this old PC that I can still use it for my main PC. I use one of the death by HOGGING Norton's PCs for gaming.
