Just wanted to let you all know that I found this forum that had a DIY section about building a antenna.
I'm getting 45 Digital stations w/ about half of them in HD also all my local analog stations are coming in crystal clear now too.

Here is the link to the forum w/ all the info on how to build one.

here is a link to a picture of the one I built.

With my store bought antenna I was getting on average a signal strenth of about 70(1 to 100) w/ dropouts, now w/ my homemade antenna my signal is holding at 98 w/ no dropouts at all.

Homemade antenna.

Hey hgywayman,

Is your antenna amplified in any way? It doesn't look it from your posted photo. I'm thinking of building my own and using your set-up. If you have any tips or tricks they would be greatly appreciated. I have an indoor TERK amplified antenna (Nothing extreme or expensive.) that I have tucked away in my attic. It's able to pull in all the locals but the dropouts are an aggravation to no end. Especially now that football season is upon us. Anyway, thanks for the posted photo. It'll give me something to start with anyway.

grc24, answer to your ? is...

No, but have wondered if it one would give me a perfect 100 lock on all my channels.

My antenna is of the simplest design.
1 - UHF/VHF/Fm transformer, 1 - 2x1 5' long, 6 - hangers, 10 - screws and washers and a grounding block. Ground the reflector/mast and also run the cable though a properly grounded coax grounding block immediately prior to entry into the building.

I have it mounted on the existing antenna mount at a angle of about 42deg. on the back of my house w/ an aprox. height of 15'. The drop cable is 18' going into a splitter feeding my TV's in living room and bedroom. The cable to TV in living room is about 25' and the cable to TV in bedroom is about 75'.

My 1st antenna is the one that works the best! It was made free hand and all hanger cuts are not of equal length??? The second one I made I took more time and measured every thing and tried to be more persice w/ all hangers being of equal length and guess what, it was a complete flop (not sure though if it was a defective transformer or the hangers being the same length).

Hope this helps,
hyghwayman

Here is another picture of my antenna placement. The position in this photo didn't work so well so I turned it 90deg. so the antenna is going over roof, which gives it a lot more stability.

Multiple DTV Stations

by ocmccormick - 4/2/08 8:51 PM In reply to: you might want to look at this... by hyghwayman

I live in an area which is between Three Different Television Markets. Technically included in the Quad Cities IA-IL market, but also receive analog signals from the Cedar Rapids-Waterloo-Dubuque-Iowa City Market and the Ottumwa, Iowa-Kirksville, Missouri market.

I have tried two antennas, both are by Philips and were sold at WalMart from $20 to $40. Neither one had great results.

I know in analog, I can get WHBF, KWQC, KWWL, WQAD, KCRG, KIIN, KYOU, KLJB, KWKB, WQPT, and KFXA. But when I search for digital, I only get some of them, being KWQC, WQAD, KIIN, and KWKB.

At one time, I got WHBF, KLJB, and WQPT in Digital, also the others I mentioned broadcast in Digital Television Format.

If you go just 5-10 Miles to the Southwest of here, KYOU-TV comes in very well, KYOU-DT too. But, KWWL, KCRG, and KFXA all broadcast from sites near Rowley, Iowa, which is located North of Cedar Rapids and East of Waterloo. Rowley in 70 some Miles Away, yet I can get KFMW-FM, which broadcasts from there as well.

Is there any Digital/HDTV Antenna out there than can go 80-100 Miles on VHF/UHF Digital? I am also looking for a Great FM Radio Antenna to go about that same distance.

Let Me Know. Thanks.

Have you gone to antenna.org to see how much antenna you

by NM_Bill - 9/4/07 5:40 PM In reply to: HD Antennas: LaCrosse vs Terk HELP? by matthew.holmes

actually need? I mention it because I am not familiar with LaCrosse but notice the Terk is a hundred bucks. Many exterior antenna needs can be met for $40-50 instead.

Obviously, it's always nicer to live within short distance & to have a clear line instead of big intervening mountains or skyscrapers. I happen to live 7 miles from the area transmitters on a mountain & have an actual straight line of sight. Little help needed under that sort of conditions.

People use so many abbreviations & acronyms. What's a CEA?

I'd also mention that any antenna does not know if it is high def or low def, it merely picks up signals, be they of either degree of definition.
