diff between 1,066MHz RAM & 667MHz???

by bizzton3k - 11/20/07 12:33 PM

Hello all,
I was just wondered what difference I might notice in an hp versus gateway with 3GB 1,066MHz DDR2 SDRAM 3GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
I think the hp might have higher quality, but the gateway's 1066MHz ram will be faster with CAD applications.

Also, how much difference would I notice with a 350 versus 400 watt power supply.

Thanks!!!

-> ZERO, zip, nada. The watts in a PSU do not make it run faster.

As to the memory, you can fit faster ram into many PCs and the speed is never used since the chipset tops out at the lower speed.

I was under the impression, from cnet and others, that the difference in watts would be noticeable because the graphics card needs as much power as possible?

thanks

That's applicable to ...

Machines you build yourself. You want "head room", spare watts since you may not know what you'll add to your machine. Frankly I'd never fit under a 500 Watt in a machine I'd build. But the truth is it won't make it run faster.

Power supply way too small

by mjd420nova - 11/20/07 6:37 PM In reply to: diff between 1,066MHz RAM & 667MHz??? by bizzton3k

I can't believe that it even works with just a 350 watt power supply, it must run very hot. Unless the system board can use the 1 Ghz memory, you won't see any difference except in your wallet. The system board has to be able to run the faster speed or you're wasting money and won't notice any difference. That unit needs at least 500 watts or you'll turn it into a toaster without an eject button.

Cnet's info re: Gateway GM5632E's 3GB 1,066MHz DDR2 SDRAM

by laubachs - 11/23/07 7:17 PM In reply to: diff between 1,066MHz RAM & 667MHz??? by bizzton3k

I can not find this info on gateway's site nor Best Buy's site. I am interested in Office Depot's GM5636E $799 and Best Buy's GM5628E $949, but I cannot find the MHZ's of the DDR2 SDRAM for these lower models. Can you tell me how I can find the MHZ for these two cheaper Gateway 2 core quad models?

Gateway tech says GM5632E has 667mhz ram not 1,066mhz

by laubachs - 11/23/07 7:49 PM In reply to: Cnet's info re: Gateway GM5632E's 3GB 1,066MHz DDR2 SDRAM by laubachs

Cnet's great review of GM5632E is in error regarding higher grade ram according to Gateway tech personnel.

Doesn't say 1,066MHz RAM

by VAPCMD - 11/23/07 8:33 PM In reply to: diff between 1,066MHz RAM & 667MHz??? by bizzton3k

the specs refer to the Data Bus as 1066MHz and the RAM speed is 667MHz (PC5300).

PS...Does the store you're shopping at have both GATEWAY models on display and running ?

Sorry, but I don't understand what you are saying? If you would elaborate as much as possible I would be more than happy.

PS-the stores should have both the gateway and hp models, if not just something similar. I cannot really test them though as I were using them at home. This is so mainly b/c they are not connected to the internet and do not run CAD/Inventor, or other intensive software.

THANKS!!

Disregrard post ....

In reading your original post where all the data was run together I missed that there were two different PCs.

It looked like you were mixing up the Data Bus Speed (1066MHz)and RAM speed (667MHz)in the GATEWAY.

Gateway GM5632E HP Pavilion Elite m9040n
Price $1,229 $1,190

Optical drives 16x dual-layer DVD burner w/Labelflash 16x dual-layer DVD burner w/LightScribe
Operating system Windows Vista Home Premium Windows Vista Home Premium

Are there any system tests that you could run that would indicate performance similar to your intended use ? Something you could put on a CD or DVD and run it on both PCs at the retailer?

I am unsure of if I am mixing up the information, because if you look at the chart, from my initial link, it seems like the gateway has 1067 ram, while the hp only has 667. This is also evident when cnet reviews the gateway at being faster b/c of it's 1067 ram.
Now, I am somewhat new to the whole technical aspect of computers, but I don't think I have mixed up the ram here, have I? I am just repeating what the memory category states??

Also, I'm having a hard time thinking about what I could really put on a cd that would allow me to accurately tell performance wise, which computer was any better than the other.

thanks

GM5632E does not possess 3GB 1,066MHz DDR2 SDRAM

by laubachs - 11/23/07 11:00 PM In reply to: reply by bizzton3k

The CNET review of the Gateway GM5632E(http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/gateway-gm5632e/4505-3118_7-32670774.html?tag=pdtl-list) is wrong. Both models (Gateway & HP)contain 3GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Gateway GM5632E does not possess 3GB 1,066MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

I have verified this with a Gateway Techie and with a Best Buy computer tech (at the store) after my previous post.

Best Deal!

by laubachs - 11/23/07 11:20 PM In reply to: GM5632E does not possess 3GB 1,066MHz DDR2 SDRAM by laubachs

I will be purchasing the the Gateway Gateway® GT5636E Desktop Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Processor Q6600 from Office Depot for $799 MSRP (http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=SK&id=592945&Ntt=2core%20quad&uniqueSearchFlag=true&An=text). This has 2GB of PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667mhz

Just purchased from Best Buy:
2x 1GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667mhz $27 each
XFX - Fatal1ty GeForce 8500 GT Graphics Card 512MB Professional for $115 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8545078&st=8500+gt+professional&type=product&id=1188560188489)

I will have 4GB ram and a much better graphics card. That will save me $262. Though I will only get 400 GB hard drive. I can buy a 1TB hard drive for that (if I needed it).

Not sure who mixed up the system RAM info

by VAPCMD - 11/24/07 9:10 AM In reply to: reply by bizzton3k

... but according to the mfg memory specs quoted below (vice what you put in your original post) the GATEWAY GM5632E doesn't come with 1066MHz RAM.

Here's the link for the GATEWAY SYSTEM SPECs (below). My point was, it didn't agree with what you put in your original post (quoted below). Data bus for the HP is 1066MHz but not the RAM..RAM is what you see just under the link below.

"- Installed: 3072 MB DDR2, 667 MHz, (PC2-5300) dual channel memory (two 1024 MB and two 512 MB modules)
- Expandable to: 8 GB (4 DDR2 DIMM slots)"

Here's the text from your original post
