Hi there,
Can anyone recommend any free software to automate the task of breaking up in an efficient way large folders of data to backup onto DVD disks?
So, yes, I'm a digital packrat and have about 600 GB in 3 hard disk volumes and I backed up only ONE folder and took up 6 DVD ROMs. As you may imagine, sorting out and keeping track of the files manually was annoying as hell! now I have a bit over 550 GB's to go. So, that's why I'm looking for software to automate the task of sorting out folders, (I don't mind feeding DVD ROMs onto the tray)
Can anyone suggest any software to do this? I also want to store the data in it's native format, (being able to open it in any computer without the need of the creation software being present.
Thanks
AB

The task of backing up 600 Gb to DVD's that each contain 4.7 Gb isn't trivial. You might want to research the use of an external hard disk. The price of a 500 Gb hard disk is comparable to the price of 100 DVD-R's, and both copying and accessing the files later on is much easier.
I don't know the current capacity of backup tape drives, but I think the hardware is more expensive.

Thanks, you're right, it took 8 double layer DVD's to back up a single folder (I didn't mention I used double layer DVD's). It's better and cheaper to just get a big hard drive. I ended up getting a 750 GB hard drive and a case to put it together to use as a USB 2.0 external hstorage solution.
No need to go through the hassle of keeping a heck of a bunch of DVD's !
It recently saved me when I formatted and installed a new operating system.
Now you need a good software to backup... automatically if you desire. I am presently using VersionBackup and have used Cobian. Both are free and work quite well with a little learning curve. You can Google for them.
Just information if interested.
