I use Trend Micro because it seems to be compatible with all of my software and it isn't a resource hog.
Well, besides the fact that my ISP, Comcast, provides this complimentarily (free), I have investigated several and found thru various websites that it is P2P compatible and protects while using a torrent client (i.e. Azureus). It has also the top rating for ones that are P2P compatible.
Don't try this with Zone Alarm or System Mech 7 Firewall. HEADACHES!!! Spent hours trying to configure them to allow P2P--NO GO!
Avast! Simply put, it is the very best free (Home Edition) software protection out there. Loading it onto the computer was extreamly simple, the updates are automatic and the update notifications can be motified to aleart you of the updates. I use the voice notification.
I have traveled the world without one incident using Avast!. I have used other brands and troubled with updates or subscription renewals needing attention but not able to do it due to restrictions (at any world location).
Using Avast! in the USA or anywhere in the world, it performs flawlessly! You cannot receive a better product for the price (FREE!)
I, too, am surprised you did not include Avast in your list. It consistently rates high in testing and is equal to--and even beat out--the well-known pay programs, according to several reliable sources I've read.
At one time I used the free AVG and was happy with it, but when it conflicted with a new program I had installed on my laptop, I replaced it with Avast's Free Home Version and ended up being even happier with Avast. Avast updates their database more frequently and I've never had a problem with it conflicting with other programs. Shortly after doing that, I remember reading several articles that reported AVG was cutting back on their free version in favor of their paid version. I would hope they had since reversed that decision in response to user's complaints, as it was a decent product. But all things considered, I still believe Avast's Free Home Version is not only better than AVG's, but is also just as good (or even better according to some tests), than Norton's and McAfee's paid versions!.......Gina
Where's Avast Antivirus?
There are things about Norton that I do not like. It can be a pain to install. The key is for 4 license, which is useful if you have more than one pc, which many of us do. I do not want to use a free program because I get tired of the nag to purchase. I also feel that maybe not enough care was put into it since it is free. I could be wrong but that is just my opinion. My first pc had a 20 mhz processor and a 100 mb hard drive. My, how things have changed. Norton was recommended to me by experienced computer users and techs. It has been around for a long time and is trusted by many. I used McAfee for awhile, but got to where I did not like the interface. I swithced back to Norton 4 years ago. I like Norton because once installed; it pretty much runs itself.
I use the free version of AVG because it works and it has a very small system footprint, unlike some commercial anti-virus/security software. Having an older system I need all the processing power I have to run the applications that I have. AVG has warned me when I have received a booby-trapped or contaminated e-mail. Automatic updates are available almost daily, 6 out of seven day in a typical week, even when these updates are only a few KB.
Because it works for me and it fits my budget and has not failed me in 8 years. The two major do all suites that come loaded as crapware, well they do it all and not very well and I have to pay for crappy application that cannot realistically be all to all. Hey sounds like Vista. Tired of paying for crappy applications, did I mention that already?...lol.....yeah AVG for me, I'm sure there are other good ones out there especially if you pay.
This works for me.......
I run Avast! I have had it running for 5 months now with no problems to date. Regular updates, excellent clean up programmes etc.... what more do you want and it`s a free download.
I originally found out about Avast! through this website, thanks!

I have been using Zone Alarm Suite, which includes anti-virus, anti-spam, and more. I also use Webroot's Spy Sweeper, Spybot, and Ad-Aware.
The Suite was using CAs anti-virus product but I believe they have moved to a new one.
Zone Alarm has caught several bugs before they bit, including a number of dangerous e-mails. Their firewall has caught a few evil outbound attempts to access the Internet.
The firewall also block a series of hack attempts on a system I managed to put on the DMZ by mistake. That poor box got hammered mercilessly for hours but the hackers never got through.
Whatever is in the Suite, I have not been bitten by a bug in the 3 years I have been using it so I would have to say it works well.
On the down side, Zone Alarm is now part of Checkpoint. They are so big and "corporate" they don't reply to e-mail they send.
I've been a MicroWorld customer for about five years. I've NEVER had a virus or spyware problem. It may not be the cheapest solution, but is has been highly effective with its daily automated updates and periodic analysis of my systems. Customer service has also been very responsive to questions. I gladly renew my subscription every year. Whenever some version of Norton comes installed on a new system, I can't get rid of it fast enough!
I have been using Norton since the 3.0 days, but my latest downgrade to Internet security 2007 is the last. First, the license was for 3 computers, but what what hidden under a sticker on the outside was that the license for all 3 starts when you install it on the first computer, so when I installed it on my laptop 6 months later when my current license expired I only had 183 days. What a rip-off! Well it turns out that it doesn't really matter because the program is so bad I will not be keeping it for 6 months. It slows down my computer so bad I can't use it for the first 20 minutes after I boot up. Sometimes it downloads virus definitions 3x a day which renders the computer unusable for the 10-15 minutes it takes. It also slows down my computer so bad that switching between programs is like downloading a huge photo on a 14.4 dial up modem. It paints the screen slowly. I have over a gig of ram too. My other huge complaint is that there is no way to easily turn off pop-up blockers or other features for just short periods of time, to load certain web pages the way that 2006 could. You have to dig deep to do it and sometimes it doesn't offer the choice of how long you want it off for. Needless to say I am searching for a new program.
I am using avira antivir which is free for one year. Works fine. No resource guzzling. Used nod32 on trial. it is also quite good. I felt NORTON tries to do too much and keeps troubling you and slowing you down. But i havent used norton 2007.
I bought it at the suggestion of Tiger electronics's salesman.
I use it because I have too much money in it not too. I do not like it at all, and part of the reason is that they have not sent the promised refund (3 months overdue). Another part is the almost impossible task of setting it up so that my desired programs will work, maybe it is a cross of problems with Vista which so far I dislike immensely. I intend to try going back to XP, which I thoroughly enjoyed using. My wife has a laptop with XP on it and I have this one with Vista. If we both turn them on at the same time, she is through with her e-mail, before I can even start! When this CA expires, I will most likely try something else.

WLOC Version 2 has been in Beta for the last 6 months. I used version 1 prior and really like its simplicity.
Version 2 works on my 64 Bit Vista O/S and there is really nothing bad I can say about it. It just works and stays out of my way.
Every other solution I've used, especially Norton required frequent uninstalls and reinstalls for reasons I was never able to figure out. THAT drove me crazy as I don't have time to deal with all that. I just want it to work, not hog my resources, and not bother every 5 minutes with some message I really don't care about.
