i can't believe i read all 6 pages of posts

by frankgallagher - 8/1/07 9:44 PM In reply to: Blue Ray Purchase by tigerhawk22

i got burned by sony with the beta player in the early 80's and this has tainted my view of the blue ray. having said that i have been dying to buy a hd player since i got my hdtv and hd satellite. of course i have hdmi cable but a standard dvd player, which made watching dvd's like vhs compared to hd. so i did some research and went to best buy and bought a upconvert dvd player for 58 bucks. i hooked it up with hdmi to my hdtv and voila i have great picture. it is by no means like my high def channels but it is more than enough to keep me away from either player until this war is over. personally i think sony has a terrible track record, the ps3 is crap and they will ultimately lose this....again.

Blu-ray or HD DVD player

by lynjs - 8/5/07 4:28 PM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Price is a factor because one just can't keep upgrading their entertainment systems. It comes a time when someone needs to take a hold of the situation and just say, ENOUGH!

There should be a player that plays all formats no matter what kind of media you own, just as there should be one game system that plays all video game formats. People just can't keep buying stuff every two years.

As for the two formats in question, I could care less as long as I can see what I want for little to no cost to me.

Answer to poll question (which kind and why)

by Snowyraven - 11/22/07 1:56 AM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I recently upgraded my PS2 to PS3. I figure if I am going to pay an outrageous price for a high-quality blue-ray dvd player, it is going to be one that allows me to enjoy my wonderful MMORPG game, EQOA.

When they are no more expensive than DVD players are now

by gbswales - 11/22/07 2:29 AM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Cost has to be the biggest factor - I dont want a "cinema" in my living room - that is what cinemas are for - and I cant really achieve it without a wall size screen anyway!

Seriously I waited until the price of a flat screen panel was the same as I paid for my last CRT TV and I will wait until either my existing DVD player dies or the price of HD drops to the same level (and until the discs cost no more than normal DVDs)

I'd buy if one of the local crackheads happens to go on a late night shopping spree and needs money for a fix.

Region coding and language ability

I like the HD capability and (hopefully future proof nature) of Blu-Ray, but as a frequent traveller being able to buy most Blu-Ray movies all over the world is a big plus. If it were not for this I would stick with regular DVDs for at least another 1 or 2 years.

HD-DVD is NOT an option. In countries such as Ukraine, Belarus and Russia I have not found any HD-DVD titles at all. Only Blu-Ray is widely available in these countries. I have not seen a single HD-DVD there yet.

Also as my partner is not a native English speaker it is good to have the multiple language soundtracks. regular DVDs only have a few. I was a few weeks abroad recently and I could only find a few DVDs with an English soundtrack. Even Harry Potter, Die Hard 4, Are we done yet and Evan almighty were not available in English. The Blu-Ray discs all DID have english, but regretfully I did not have access in my apartment to a Blu-Ray player.

HD-DVD, Porn and Blu-Ray

by mini14gb - 11/22/07 6:49 PM In reply to: Region coding and language ability by varun8

I like how the HD-DVD fanboys like to point out the U.S. porn industry will be the deciding factor. Well it appears that other countries porn industries have choosen Blu-Ray. So don't think your pornmat (format) has a lock on world wide porn sales. This war as pointed out will not just be decided by the US market alone. Much the same with motorcycle wars Europe and Asia will play a major role. Blu-Ray is much more in demand in other countries. Not to mention that Blu_ray disk are out selling HD-DVD to the tune of 61% to 39%.

Neither. Hardware is out! Software is in. I do not need another format for videos or music just a bigger hard-drive.

Waiting for one to die

by rrusson - 11/22/07 6:46 AM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I'm not spending a penny until one of these formats dies an early Betamax death. I'm hoping it's Blu-ray. Stupid name and yet another money-grubbing, consumer-screwing move by Sony. They've made some great products over the years, but I have a graveyard of proprietary crap like memorysticks in my house and I'm done buying Sony. In all fairness, Sony is a habitual offender, but the electronics industry is full of greedy companies trying to own new markets at the expense of customers. I'll put my money in standards the industry has agreed on and ignore schoolyard fights like Blu-ray vs. HD DVD.

Quality - Blu-Ray

by aeirisk - 11/22/07 7:16 AM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

It just took one minute to compare HD and Blu - no comparison. On a plasma it looks incredible.

Which HD player standard will win?

by SScherf - 11/22/07 7:32 AM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I will be waiting to see which HD player standard 'wins'. Or if a dual player gets to selling for less than $200 I'll probably purchase a player. For now my own slide presentations and broadcast HD are the only things I'll be seeing in HD.

by Kettlewell - 11/22/07 7:54 AM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

When the DVD's themselves are less than $18, and when there is a better selection of movies.

Since they seem intent on fighting it out, I'll sit on the sidelines until someone gets some sense or someone else comes up with the "next big thing".

Price

by lsippell - 11/22/07 8:42 AM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I went with hd-dvd when Best Buy had the Toshiba HD-A2 on sale for $99.00 a couple of weeks ago. And was lucky enough that they had run out and let me have an HD-A3 for the same price!

One of the movies that came packaged with it was the Bourne Identity, which I also have in regular DVD. I have a Philips upconverting DVD player with HDMI out and connected it and the Toshiba to my Sony 65 inch rear projection TV with 1080i through a HDMI switcher and did a direct comparison of the two by syncing the playback of both players and switching back and forth between the two. Although I thought the picture quality of the Philips was superb, my whole family was amazed away by the difference between the two. And as a bonus, the HD-A3 seams to upconvert the regular DVD’s slightly better than the Philips.

I'll Upgrade to Blu-ray or HD DVD when;

by joepm1 - 11/22/07 9:17 AM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

When someone makes a player that plays Blu-ray, HD DVD AND standard DVDs. I refuse to stack players on top of players because the industry cannot decide on a format. I have close to a thousand DVDs and ANY player I purchase will have to be able to play them plus both HD formats. I'm not made of money, but the player manufacturers are. As the customer they should cater to me, not the other way around!
