Network intrusion

by tech_smart24 - 11/17/07 2:57 AM

While browsing the net from a cyber cafe, I had this sneaky suspicion that someone in the cafe, perhaps the administartor, is accessing my machine to know my browsing habits. Is it possible for me to know, if somebody is accessing my machine while I am on a network?

Yes, it is possible if your system that is connected in public networkings (free wifi connection). They (the provider of the free wifi connection) can check which sites is being viewed if they want to.

It is also possible if the machine you are using is infected with some type of malware that has ability to send info from your machine.

And also possible if there is a user who is using some kind of tool to intrude on connections that it will be able to bypass any password.

You need to make sure that your firewall software is in place, your hard-drive is not sharing, the devices or modules in your machine is set to only allow what you want to allow. Example: If you are using a laptop that has Bluetooth connection and not using it, it is best to disable it or configure to notify you if anyone wish to connect thru it. There are many other things to do to block/prevent intrusion. Depending on what you have (modules, devices) and how you are connected.

Go to the following website to learn more how to protect your computer (whether you're connected to your private home network or public network e.g. cyber cafe, hotspot)

IS there a way to know whether the administrator is accessing my PC? For eg, my machine suddenly slowing down or I can't open a folder I created?
