New Zune vs. Creative Zen Vision M

by profcumquatt - 11/17/07 12:02 AM

I am buying my first MP3 player, and I was pretty sure that I would get a Vision M, but then I heard about the new Zunes and now I can't decide between the two...

Zune pros: 3.2" screen! (much bigger than the Vision M's screen, which would be good since I plan on watching movies on it); more durable (glass & metal construction); smaller, sleeker, and sexier; practically 2 years newer (I'm worried that if I get a vision M it will quickly become dated); more attractive interface, comes with better headphones (although I plan on replacing mine sometime so this probably doesn't matter much); displays detailed radio information

Zune cons: Can't be used as a portable hard drive without a hack (I definitely will be using my player as a hard drive); no bookmarks (which is a bummer because I would like to listen to audiobooks); cannot buy music from Naptster, etc.; screen res. low for its size (the Creative's video display is supposed to be really good); supposedly has an oversimplified software; supports fewer video formats

By the way, do either of these devices have a way of displaying lyrics? This is a feature I'd really like to have.

Also, does Creative plan on coming out with a hard-drive-based replacement for the Vision:M anytime soon? If they do, I might just choose to wait it out.

Sorry for the long post! Suggestions, advice, recommendations would be helpful.

i really like the zen vision m's ( i own a 30gb black zvm )
but the only problem is that there not manufactured any more !!!!
so you either have to buy one off the internet new for really high price or buy a refurb !!!

the new 80gb zune is what i would reccomend for you just because of
the amazing price of $250.00 and nice glass screen !!!

and no creative is not coming out with any hdd players !!! anytime soon at least !! maybe like next summer or january ( the month there releasing a new player )

>> my final thoughts <<
i really like the new 80gb zune !!! and they come with quality earphones !!!! did i mention big screen !!!

If it was the same price or cheaper to get a 30GB vision m than an 80GB zune, which would you get? (I looked around online and I found a used "like new" vision m for $185 and $236 for a new vision m.)

If you're looking purely at capacity, the Zune is a better deal (a little over $3/GB) than the like new Vision M (about $6/GB).

More to consider.....

Input convienence is important. Video recording, on these are a pain. Look for a PVR that can record DIRECTLY into the unit instead of having to convert through software.

Another consideration is the battery. You never think of it until it happens but the built-in batteries when exhausted and can't be recharged might not be available as an after-market replacement. Meaning your player/recorder is now just an expensive paper weight. Look for a unit that has a door for swapping batteries.

My 2¢

Zune at Buy.COM

by dminott - 11/19/07 10:28 PM In reply to: ZUNE by chows2175

I picked up a new, brown, 30GB Zune at BUY.COM for $70!
It was $100 and got a $30 rebate by signing up for a no-fee credit card. I've had it for two days, and am enjoying it!
The Wi Fi works great and allows me to update podcasts automatically, while not being tethered, as long as I'm in range.
It has a few quirks, but they are in software, and as the upgrades appear, the quirks will disappear. Audio quality is excellent, but remember that the headphone wire is your FM antenna!
Video is superb. Bright large screen with fully saturated colors.
The PC software is a bit frustrating to use, but that will improve as time goes by, as well.
I've removed iTunes from my PC forever!
There are third party programs available (some for free, like Encode 360) which can convert most any format to one that the Zune can handle.
I no longer have to worry about missing an episode of Car Talk... they ate there waiting for me on the Zune!

Zune software...ARRGH!!!

by profcumquatt - 11/20/07 12:30 AM In reply to: New Zune vs. Creative Zen Vision M by profcumquatt

The major reason why I am hesitant about buying a Zune is not the device itself, but the software--which for me, is extremely frustrating to use. I downloaded it a few days ago and have been fiddling around with it for a while. When I transferred my existing music collection from iTunes into the Zune software, it somehow insisted on listing each track on my mix CDs as a separate CD... the fact that the software can't even understand the concept of a mix CD is really annoying. Also, it is impossible to make any ID3 tag changes-- I had to go through a lenghty process to put my iTunes music folder into the zune folder and then make the necessary changes to my music library in iTunes.

And don't even get me started on the nightmarish situation with the way the Zune software has organized/screwed up my podcasts, which would probably take me hours to fix...

Bottom line: If buying a Zune means I'll be stuck using the included software (Microsoft, unfortunately, hasn't as of yet given us any other choice), then I'd probably be better of with a Zen. However, if in the future Microsoft makes Zunes compatible with other music management software, I would seriously consider getting one.

Thoughts? (Again, sorry for the long rant.)

Creative Zen Vision:M

The bottom line: The Zune has blossomed from an ugly duckling into a worthy iPod alternative.
