I'm disabled, 61 years old, don't have much money and spend most of my time in the house. I save and spend what I can afford on technology because I like to. 34" high def TV, 5.1 surround sound, xbox360, hd dvd, a good computer, etc. People tell me I'm wasting my money on stuff I can't afford. So what? I don't spend my time hating people who have more than I have and I enjoy my life. Speaking of life, you should get one.
When I saw this article I had to post! I work for a LCD/Plasma manufacture, and head up the returns department, so I get to see %'s of what is comming back versus each other. They come out to be very close, LCD's for backlight/power inverter issues, and plasmas for similar issues with the addition of heavy screen bleeding caused by the plasma going out. The only difference I know is that the average LCD will have a longer warranty period then a plasma TV. So that in itself should tell you something. Most of our plasma's come with a one year, whereas the LCD's come with a 3 year, yet we still get back the same amount under warranty. Think about that. In high in sight, I would advise highly against plasma, due to LCD response rates and resolutions being just fine for today's applications. Plasma is a dying technology. Maybe OLED will rue the day.
This guy knows what he is talking about. LCDs will have less problems when LED and OLEDs start to become the norm.
that was one of the big reasons for the compitition of the LCD .. a long proven tech that last forever... my 30" Aquos is 4 yrs old now and give the new ones a run for the money...never any issues with it at all..
I still use my 6 year old rear projection tv. I use the following solutions for the following problems.
Problem ------ Solution
Glare / Turn lights off behind me and close curtains
Image Quality / Get used to it
Extra money in my wallet / Spend it on beer.
lol this must be my Uncle
To mention that the drinking of beer increases image quality by about 100x100 every 2 beers. Think about the possibilities...
i see now, i was thinking of how i could have spent 3k on a babe but a six pack is $2.99 therefor I save $$ and get HD babe.. My LCD has a remote too so I can turn it off anytime
and that was well spent money too
We should start a AV outlet that sell refurb rear screen projection and promises a percieved 3550x2540 resolution after any 20 pack of beer. Cha Ching $$$.
Babes and beer :P ok I'm going to get plasterd tonight and I will be looking at a Samsung 46" 1080p 120 Hz Mega LCD
Just in time for Guitar Hero III on my PS3 !!
Halo 3 pwns guitar hero, what the heL1 do you need 1080P for when your playing guitar hero?!?!? Im still stuck at work dreaming bout getting plastere. God I hate the AV industry...
atualy I play Final Fantasy a lot and Fire Emblem that just came out last week, FE X that is... but yesterday got my son Guitar Hero III for his b-day...we had fun with it last night... we live at best Buy lol...will be getting that "Rock Band" next up to four people can play at a time..
This is the TV I was talking about...plasma's cant compete
http://product.samsung.com/hd/nfl.html
LCD HDTV 120 Hz
LED based backlighting dramatically increases contrast, black level and color saturation.
outstanding contrast ratio of 500,000 to 1
LED motion Tech give 120 Hz frame rate, that's 50 % better than rest of the pack
The only TV that stands out on its own now that I've seen.
I would love to have that TV it looks pretty sweet. I was at a ISF(Imaging Science Foundation) thingy the other day and they were talking about how the specification used to gauge contrast like 500000:1 does not mean anything because their is no standard setup for the test within the industry. I know some manufacture will turn lights in the test environment on and off to achieve a inflated contrast ratio. Its kind of like those light cigarette with holes in the filters tests. Only way I would buy something is to see it first, I have seen that Samasung 71 at the fry's by my house and would have to agree that its amazing in and out of ambient light. Wonder how world of warcraft would look on it hooked up with an Geforce 8800 HDMI version...
my first post here was I ignor the hype, the salesman and buy the best picture ![]()
This past summer I bought a Samsung LCD flatscreen. I'm very pleased with it. It has the matte screen, not glossy, and I REALLY like that. For me, the glossy screen was always annoying--on CRT TVs or anything else.
I never looked seriously at plasma TVs. The potential for image burn-in was not something I'd want to risk, however slight that risk may be.
The other thing I had heard about plasma TVs is that they are more fragile than LCDs, and if shipped they can't go upside-down or else the screen components could break. This never sounded credible to me but, frankly, I never researched it very much.
My advice to flat-screen TV shoppers, do some reading on the subject to you have some idea of the technical details & features of these units--they are nothing like your regular tube TV. Then look at a variety of TVs and pick something you like with emphasis on picture & color quality. If you look at these things more or less side-by-side you will see differences in the qualities of the images.
One other thing that was of some importance to me: I wanted a flat-screen TV that had a set of audio & video jacks fairly accessible from the side of the unit rather than only on the back. The Samsung model that I have has pretty much a full set of jacks located on the back of the unit near the left edge of the screen--they are oriented toward that edge so you can plug in a camera or camcorder or the cable from a PC quite easily without having to get behind the TV or move the TV around to access the jacks.
On another forum someone said that some Sony flatscreens have some jacks located on the front of the screen, at the bottom, but I've never seen one of these models.
