have a look this weekend at best buy where you can compare many brands and models at one time...man I would move in that store if they would let me lol
but hey, you are absolutly right about bulk.. that was the whole reason for the invention of these thin TV's..
Plasma
by ghealey - 11/15/07 7:59 AM In reply to: CRTs aren't even debatable! by sobishopI bought a 50 inch Panasonic Plasma over two years ago...it was on sale at Best Buy for $3400 plus tax plus a four year warranty. The salesman wanted to sell me an enhanced cable for the plasma citing the "fact" that it would improve reception. I didn't buy it. I shouldn't have bought the warranty either. I bought the plasma solely based on the picture quality over all the other technologies.
This plasma gets heavy use...twelve hours a day. It's located in a room that is mostly glass and leads out to the swimming pool. There isn't one problem with this unit. I have comcast cable and there were some slight glitches with not enough transmission signal going to the plasma at first but I attribute that to an inept cable technicians. There is no burn in..the picture is excellent....and I really have no complaints. In fact, my son in LA just bought one....for $1700. One note: I would never buy a plasma less than 50 inches. 42 inches is too small even in a smaller room...

We all have eyes, but we all see something different. This advances my original opinion that it's not the the type of TV, LCD / Plasma, that really matters. The technology is getting better on both types every day and many of the problems I have seen are on older sets, or out right Lemon sets. There will always be some Lemons in the mix. As far as "waiting a few years for the tech. to get better and the prices go down", what makes you think you will even be alive a few years from now? I've been waiting long enough for the industry to finally get off of their collective Duff's and implement the HD technology which could have actually been done back to around 1978! So no more waiting for me.
Here is my final conclusive advice / opinion, whatever.
Go shopping, spend some time, look, listen, do some homework on the HD subject, learn about what you are investing in, ask questions while knowing that anyone who claims to know everything is not worth listening to, and finally make an informed choice. Ask yourself; what are my viewing habits / styles i.e. movies vs. sports, animation for kids and etc.? Who else in my home will be using it? What components am I hooking up? How big is my space? How big do I want to go? How much do I want to invest right now? I think if you follow steps like this, the matter of LCD, or Plasma will be academic.
I'll leave you with how one person "ME" made his decision.
First I did my homework. Read, looked up and accumulated as much knowledge on the subject as I could in a few months prior to purchase. Then visited several retailers in order to observe the differences in LCD, Plasma, CRT, DLP and etc. Observed how different brands and sizes impacted my perception. After that I thought about what I / we watch. In our case it's Sports, Movies, shows, documentaries and animation for the kid. So now I'm leaning towards LCD. Then took into account that I will be hooking up to Direct TV and eventually be purchasing a Playstation with Blu Ray. I chose Blu Ray since they are who carries Disney / Pixar and my kid loves their product. I kind of dig it too. Oh, and I like to play video games too. If you are going to spend all that money on a Blu Ray player, you might as well be able to play video games to. I then looked at my space and saw that anything bigger than 50", or smaller than 40" would be the wrong size for the area.
I looked at prices VS. set quality and bells and whistles. I picked a price range keeping in mind that eventually, maybe 5 years from now I will purchase a current model. Price range was no more than $1700.
I almost purchased a Vizio 42" LCD because it was on sale for a mere $1000. They looked pretty good for a "No Frills" set and I thought I could live with it for the price. Then, at the same location I saw a 42" SHARP Aquos 1080P LCD on sale for $1299. I had done some homework on Sharp and knew they had a good set, but now I looked even deeper. I found that they were really breaking some new ground and were putting out sets which had great new features at a reasonable price. For $300 more, I decided it was worth it. Well for me that was it. Yes, a Sony 1080p, or a Samsung would have been nice. I found when looking around, to me, they had the prettiest picture, but at $2500 to $2700 respectively, they were not an option.
Now everyone is different and will make choices that suit them personally, but I have now lived with this set for about 3 months and absolutely love it. My provider has 150 HD channels and I never have to watch standard Def again! Picture is great. My 5.1 system sounds great. The wife is happy. The kid can't stop jumping when he's watching "Flushed Away" in 1080p and I can see the stitching on the baseball at Yankee stadium while it's in mid flight. How cool is that? Life is good. Don't wait. If you can somehow afford it, treat yourself. We all grew up with TV and the older of us all remember going crazy trying to get a better picture on our 19" Zenith Console BOX! How many times did Archie Bunker look purple? Stop listening to people who would complain about a sunny day and enjoy whatever you choose.

LCDs enticed with their brightness and non-reflective surfaces. But with time I learned that PICTURE QUALITY should be the final determining factor. I convinced my wife to allow us to purchase the new 50" Kuro. It was sort of a risk given the added expense. The reward? - Simply the best picture I could have imagined. All the neighbors are rethinking their LCDs. One of these weekends I'll actually go outside and rake a few leaves.

You people who have money to burn can't have any credit on here cause you can just easily purchase a new one when the technology becomes better or yours quits working. Some of us who don't have mommy and daddy's money handed down to us, have mouths to feed, vehicles to pay for, clothes to buy, bills to pay, mortgage, and other essential everyday needs have to consider all factors when making a purchase over 300 dollars.

I think my plasma is a wise investment, the best picture possible, 1080p, I got a great deal for it, and anything less would be a waste of my money knowing I settled for something less than I could afford. My wife works full time ( also with the disabled) and we care for our Autistic son as best we can. We have saved for 2 years to make this purchase with half of it still being on credit. When I finally get a chance to watch anything, I'm usually asleep before the ending of the show. So while I feel your pain, we all have plenty of our own. In my case the pain is in my legs and knees and behind my eyeballs from rarely getting more than 4 hours sleep per night.
But I love my Wife, I love my kid and I love my HDTV!
