PLASMA vs LCD's

by DUMBnEASY - 11/14/07 8:00 PM In reply to: Plasma vs. LCD or is it Myths vs Lies by gabereyes

Uh-Oh-h-h-h... I could only afford a plasma. If I could have afforded an LCD I might have bought a plasma anyway, but I didn't have enough money to know that. Got it at COSTCO on their grand opening one-day-only special - a Vizio 42" for $999. Nov. 28th it will be one year and I'm sweating bullets already. LOL!

But the story is about the guy standing next to me. I had the last Vizio on my cart already but I was still thinking... This guy kept telling me the virtues of LCD TV's. I, however, had it in my head that he just wanted me to go LCD because he wanted that last Vizio plasma.

One of the things he told me was that after six months my faces were going to turn red, then flash white, and then my TV was gonna die.

And sure enough, after about six months my faces turned red, and then started flashing white. Boy was I freaking freakin'... (double entendre?)

So I called Vizio and prepared for the worst. The customer service guys says, "So how long have you had your TV?"

6 months.

"So do you turn it off with the remote or the button?"

The Remote.

"Tell ya what. Why don't you unplug your set from the wall for oh-h-h ten minutes and then plug it back in. If it's still bad call me back."

It has been fine ever since. And when it does flash red, then white every month or two. I just unplug it again....for ten minutes.

BUT????? Nov. 28th is looming. I hope you folks wish me luck!

I don't get it.

Why are so many people thinking that plasma has a better picture that LCD??
I took home the Pioneer PDP-5080HD and I was not impressed at all. I enjoy a high resolution television and a 720p display just doesn't do it for me. And anyone who says that theres not much of a difference between 720p and 1080p obviously has never had a full 1080p tV in thier home before. And as we all know, you can't make accurate judgements by comparing a television on a retail floor. You need to take it home and calibrate the television to get the best possible picture out of it.
I recently took home the Pioneer PDP-5080HD and then took it back and got the Samsung LNT5281F. And I saw a dramatic improvement from the pioneer when I started watching the Samsung. But I later took the Samsung back and got the SONY KDL-R52XBR4. And I have to say that the XBR4 in my opinion , is the best tv on the market right now. Although I still think the samsung is one awesome television. The samsung has slightly better contrast and the benefits of 120Hz are much more noticable on the samsung but the XBR4 does a better job with cable HD (1080I) and upscaled standard DVDs. I would have to say the Samsung is a little better with Bluray though. If there was a cable company with a 1080p signal I would have stuck with the Samsung. but with todays cable signals the XBr4 does a much better job. And I am not a big fan of the "super clear panel" on the Samsung. It creates alot of glare in my living room. So the XBR4 is better for my situation. I also have a KDSR60XBR2 upstairs in my theater room. I really love SXRD. I consider it one of the best pictures out there. i even like the SXRD better than any plasma out there. but then again, I like gaming so Plasma wouldn't work for me. But I will give Plasma one thing, it is much better than CRT.

Thats my 2 cents worth.

Plasma Heaven

by moviefan1 - 11/14/07 8:13 PM In reply to: Plasma vs. LCD or is it Myths vs Lies by gabereyes

My two cents: I just bought a top rated Panasonic 42" plasma 1080p HD tv and couldn't be happier. From the installation to sitting down and viewing HD, a 100% pleasureable experience. I did a lot of research before buying either a LCD or plasma, from reading reviews on the web to many an hour in-store viewings. The average consumer may be thrilled by the brightness and high contrast of the LCD (like I was) at first sight but after studying the colors and contrast a little more closely, there's no comparison.

The plasma (the one I bought, anyway) was much better than any LCD. Their blacks are too saturated, for one and the overall picture has too much contrast. Yes, these are settings that can be changed, but I don't think you could get it to where it would truly satisfy you. I would never consider a LCD, unless it was a 13" or something like that for the kitchen. If you want the best all around picture, go with a plasma, hands down. And as far as burn in goes, as long as you don't turn up the contrast and brightness, especially during its first 200 hours of use, or if you don't keep those XM music channels on for too long, you should have nothing to worry about.

PLASMA IN THE HOME

by sonofblazoid - 11/14/07 8:31 PM In reply to: Plasma Heaven by moviefan1

I tracked CNET for about 2 years reading just about every TV review and article, also the A/V Magazines, Consumer Reports, etc. I made an informed purchase about 3 months ago for our main viewing. 50" Panasonic plasma with the anti-glare screen. Perfect.

My wife can walk into a video store and within a minute or two can tell you which sets she doesn't like the picture on. They will all be LCD's. Not an informed opinion on her part, she just dislikes the picture on them and she sees it imediately. I see differences, but the LCD's don't put me off the way they do her.

Finally, we would get an LCD for our R/V. Lighter, smaller, and not in an invironment that is as demanding. Ultimately more disposable.

Red flag

by marrckus - 11/14/07 9:18 PM In reply to: Plasma vs. LCD or is it Myths vs Lies by gabereyes

When I discovered Sony was no longer making plasma TVs, then that was enough for me. They apparently saw the handwriting on the wall for whatever reason. I'll stay with LCD until someone without a personal prejudice can tell me why Sony doesn't sell plasma anymore.

LCD v. Plasma

by hfhlt004 - 11/14/07 9:28 PM In reply to: Red flag by marrckus

I had a great LCD computer monitor, so I chose a LCD HDTV. It is a rear projection and was quite a bit cheaper than either LCD or Plasma. Great picture. (I don't watch sports, so will not get into the motion discussion.) Also LCD has no screen glare as I've seen on Plasma. That's it........

money

by Matthias99 - 11/14/07 9:33 PM In reply to: Red flag by marrckus

I would guess that LCD panels are much more profitable.

The manufacturing facilities for LCDs can also turn out panels for use in computer displays, cellphones, digital cameras, etc. There isn't much market for plasma displays outside of big HDTVs, and LCD has been making inroads there as well.

Everyone stopped making big CRTs, too -- but they arguably look better than any other HDTV technology on the market right now. They're a pain to transport and stock in stores, and not nearly as profitable as flat-panel televisions.

Red Flag

by baseballcoach1 - 11/15/07 12:03 PM In reply to: Red flag by marrckus

Sony is not making Plasma TV's because Sony makes a inferior product. It has nothing to do with Plasma's being discontinued. I work in an A/V store and we were an ASC for Sony, and we broke off all ties with Sony because all we did was fix their crap under warranty.

The Sony of now days is NOT the same Sony from the old days. They are now being manufactured in Mexico....

Well actually plasma's do burn a lot of energy

by JustEdd - 11/14/07 9:35 PM In reply to: Plasma vs. LCD or is it Myths vs Lies by gabereyes

For the same screen size a plasma uses a lot more power. For that reason, the United Kingdom is considering banning plasma sales. That is no hoey, do a search and find out for yourself.

That having been said, I think they both are worth consideration if you know what you are getting.

Post 163 of 287

well actually it depends on make, model, and size

by nizack05 - 11/14/07 10:06 PM In reply to: Well actually plasma's do burn a lot of energy by JustEdd

check out cnet's actual results from a case study, it's not some guy on the internet saying that he is paying $50 more a month (he could have never used his old tv, and now he's watching the heck out of this one)

http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6475_7-6400401-2.html

looks like vizio does a good job with the 42". Even on average for sq inch there's not much diff. (remember the average just means that there are a lot above that and a lot below that)

# LCD: 0.29 watt per square inch
# Plasma: 0.34 watt per square inch

so if you are concerned with energy check out the make and models and see if there are some like in this study you can look at and show that it uses less power

plamsma vs lcd

by at0mic22 - 11/15/07 8:46 AM In reply to: Well actually plasma's do burn a lot of energy by JustEdd

I can only comment on what i know by experience. I bought a 42'' insignia TV a year ago and it was the best purchase i ever made. I primarily use it for purposes vga input from my comptuer to watch movies and the like but also tv. My tv does run hot to the touch but i dont mind as it makes for warm hugs and a warmer room on cold nights. It has the best color i have ever seen and compared to the LCD TV's at futureshop it had no pixelization. My only real issue with most plasmas are 2 items:

1. color noise - these are white dots you see occassionally. There are filters to prevent them but no tv can eliminate them at this time.
2. "image memory" - this is when a certain static image is on screen for a long time and the ghost image will remain for a few minutes but not burn in completely on newer plasma tvs.

I just put up a 36'' LCD tv at work for vga input as well and it looks very sharp as well with the vga input and has an even larger viewing angle than my plasma. LCD's have come a long way in the last year.

There is a new breed of TV coming that will smoke LCD and plamsma by the time i purchase another tv. I think its laser based.

I bought a plasma, and it is good

by nizack05 - 11/14/07 9:53 PM In reply to: Plasma vs. LCD or is it Myths vs Lies by gabereyes

OK, I was just as worried as I was about to put down over $1000 for my new tv, but I did it and bought a plasma. It is a bit heavy (80 lbs and awkward), but I don't really expect to lift a 42" tv myself, even if not for the weight but more because I wouldn't want to chance dropping it, but between my wife and I we can both lift it shoulder high (she's about a buck-25). I was told not to lay the flat that it had to be upright.

My main concern was the burn in. I've had the tv for almost 3 months (of straight football so burn in was a possibility in my eyes) and I see no burn in, I also hooked my xbox 360 up to it and it was sweet! The HD features on this TV are awesome as they probably would be an LCD.

The TV I bought has different display modes for day vs night and I've never had it to where our living room was too bright that the picture was bad. I also have it up above compared to the seating, and I have no loss of picture from viewing at an angle or being below the tv.

If you want a plasma get one, if you want an LCD get one, Just go to the store and get a TV you like, if your TV has problems it's probably not because it's an LCD or a Plasma, it's probably because it was mishandled or it was a manufactured with defects.
