I hate to say it but Apple did not invent a cell phone any more than Lexus invented the automobile.
Apple took existing technology (music player, cell phone, palm pilot, etc) combined them with some eye candy and came up with the iPhone. They don't deserve credit for inventing anything.
Lexus took an automobile and used technology to let it "park itself" but they did not invent the automobile.

First of all Apple did not invent anything, let alone the cell phone or its abilities. Apple did not invent the computer, it did not invent the computer language, nor did it invent graphics interface we know as Windows or OS.
Apple like Microsoft are only software companies that built upon what already existed. The Iphone brings web browsing, picture taking, music and video, to one device but its not the only device that can do that.
For Time magazine to award "Invention of the Year" to the Iphone is like their movie ratings. Totally creditless or responsible. Time is nothing more than a coctail party instead of a news conference. Lets face thats where they get most of their interviews and news...from coctail parties.

Get real. Before that there WAS NO invention of the year, only "'coolest' inventions", all of whick were gimicky novelty gadgets such as the "smart rope".
WHY does anyone care what TIME magaizine thinks about innovations in technology?
People magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" is more rooted in fact than TIME magazine's assertion. TIME magazine is staffed iMac toting Adobe InDesign white sock print writers, not technologists.

I don't hate apple. In many respects the iPhone is great.
BUT, when people too the word "innovative" around I question their knowledge on the subject. I hear "innovative" and "revolutionary" all the time but when I ask for explicit details on WHAT was innovative and revolutionary from iPhone useers I NEVER get a concrete answer. I sincerely believe that, although apple makes some great products, that the users are painfully ignorant.
Touch screen? Already done.
Video playback? done.
Wi-Fi? done.
Voicemail? done.
the list goes on and on...
The ONLY thing I give the iPhone real props for is for having the best interactive expererience on any portable. But, without unlocking the iPhone it is painfully crippled with anything but a full fledged OS that has NO 3rd party applications other than thin javascipt browser apps. Unlocked means access to PORTED apps, but the real risk of being unable to update later as Apple has been "bricking" the iPhone.
Simple question...
Got a divx/xvid codec on that iPhone? Did't think so.
Please tell me next that I "can't afford one" (that usually does come next).

Everything written here is a play on words. Different words mean different things to everyone. ie. XYZ soap is now new and improved. Does that mean last years wasn't as good?, but last year the ad said is was great, fantastic blah, blah, blah. We agree to disagree. You don't like the wording, get a job at an ad agency and write some ads. I doubt that you would last long. You know it's easy to be a NIT PICKER as you are one. Chill out and make yourself a tall drink and enjoy the iPhone.

It is a print newpaper run by Apple friendly staff (like almost all print magazines are). That is just a fact. AND, I don't doubt that time magazine gets 100,000 "free" iPods for their feature.
Considering that i own a macbook pro (amongst other comps) I am not anti apple. I even own a new iPod nano video. Am I an Apple fanboy? Obviously not. I simply try to tell things the way they are. I'm a Java developer, which is about as cross platform as you can get, so I have no allegiance to any one vendor. Apple makes some good stuff. Microsoft makes some good stuff. Creative Labs has taken lots of my money over the years with good products. My Archos 604 WIFI kills any iPod other than iPhone, AND the 604 (touchscreen, wifi, vid recording) is several years old. Nokia makes awesome stuff, making true innovations without a fraction of the attention Apple gets. Blackberrys are ultra dependable. My Palm Treo Win Mob is extremely extensible. I run Kubuntu LAMP (MySQL, PHP) server (linux) at home and XP (Vista is a memory hog). I also develop in MS C# which was stolen from Java, but Visual Studio is awesome.

I don't care who made what. EVERYONE should be getting credit, but for some reason (because Apple pays more for marketing than everyone else combined), people get sucked into Apple's marketing propganda machine and don;t even notice it. Apple is like the Starbucks of computers.
If the iPhone is ever OFFICIALLY unlocked (i doubt it will though), and if nothing better has come along (nothing around right now is better than an unlocked iPhone) I wil personally be first in line to get one.

Par for the course some make it big and some just get screwed. Agreed that TIME ragazine is crap and is biased in favor of whatever their agenda is at the time. Why anyone subscribes to it is a mystery. I have no need for an iPhone but would get on if they opened it to all carriers [I'm happy with T-Mobile]. I have to admit that 8 years ago I reluctantly purchased Apple stock. Was that ever a great move, it now worth 20X what I paid for it. Now you know why I defend Apple, hey they put big bucks in my pocket.

The iphone might be sexy, desirable, etc. but at the end of the day it's just a pretty phone with a few toys, not something new. An invention it is not.

I don't think the iPone deserves the credit of being invention of the year. Sure its neat and does all kinds of tricks, but other companies have been making similar devices running the windows Pocket PC OS, but they were never named invention of the year. The iPone is just another apple device that is generating more hype than it deserves. I personally think that it is just a waste of money. Ever heard of a tablet PC? well maybe not if you an iFan.

Even I personally won't buy it, but it amazes me for each and every one whom I have asked would consider to buy it, if cost is not a problem and they all have their own favorite brands in the past.
Apple has really done an excellent job on design!

okay, just the thing. apple invented a cell phone that has a crappy internet browser, some weird music flip thing, and a touch screen. Priced too high. Basically, apple made a cell phone for us. And, it's not really an invention. Personally, I think the product of the year should be the new XPS. I got one, and it ownz! And, apple contracted with att so you have to pay there bull data and phone bills, and buy a stupid overpriced phone! I don't think so!

I've been an 'anythingbutipod' man for years, since I bought my first Creative Zen device. I tend to get a new mp3 player every year. I also look forward with relish to phone upgrade season and pay a lot of attention to both areas. My expectation of the iPhone was lower than most: I didn't expect to like it, that it would be a triumph of style over substance. I was wrong.
I'm not ready to jump yet, but I can see next gen iPhone changing my mind. There's a few things to fix: 3G data speeds for a start; 3rd party apps just as high on the agenda (I want my Mobipocket ebooks and some decent games); decent email client... but this is the most interesting phone to come out since Nokia's slidy Wap-phone.
As to whether it's strictly an 'invention'? If you limit this to a semantically precise definition, then the award becomes meaningless to most people. Perhaps the iPhone is a re-invention... but it's definitely the most interesting consumer electronics device for some time... and I can't way to see the refinements.

All I can say is "SCOREBOARD"...
