But I would really like to buy him a good flat screen moniter for his computer. Something he can play his game on and it looks good, Can anyone please give me some tips on what i need to look for all i know is the lower the respose time the better. Thanks

a couple of suggestions

Dell makes a good flat screen and the apple cinema displays are awesome. kinda depends on your budget tho because the later can get pricey. Viewsonic also makes a very nice screen too. best thing to do is go to best buy, apple store, etc and take a look around. you may have a different opinion on what looks good than i do.

flat screen

by tedtks - 11/9/07 4:21 PM In reply to: Help!! I need A Great Flat Screen Moniter For Gaming by Sommer Hyatt

I just got a new dell model 2407 a few months ago. got off ebay for
less than from dell - plus it was one of the latest versions.
paid less than 600.
just checked ebay - dell 19'' are going for less than 150
theres a 24'' currently at $305 and a model 2407 at @ $500
it all depends on how much you have in your budget.
I too play call of duty (watching the new #4 on ebay) and its
way awsome - I also watch HDTV from the cable (need card in pc)
and from DVD's.
its just money LOL LOL

Samsung may be the way to go.

by 21144EC - 11/9/07 4:46 PM In reply to: Help!! I need A Great Flat Screen Moniter For Gaming by Sommer Hyatt

The Samsung 22" Model 226BW has a 2ms response time. And Tiger Direct is selling it for $279 after a $40 mail-in rebate. The rebate ends on 11/30/2007.

Hope that helps you.

NO ONE HAS A 2MS RESPONSE TIME!!!

by nvisionmd - 11/9/07 5:04 PM In reply to: Samsung may be the way to go. by 21144EC

Just to add something to the previous comment about samsungs lcd panel with a 2ms response time. It's a NON-accurate statement, as it is 1, not possible to have an LCD shutter open/close that fast, and 2, the means by which Samsung AND LG AND a few other manufacturers measures this response time is improper and not to mention, a bitmisleading. Similar to the way LCD manufacturers measure contrast; comparison of the darkest black to the hottest white; refresh rate is a measurement of the time it takes to open and close a shutter. The problem is that because there is not any set rules on how to measure refresh rate in the industry, we are seeing different companies testing in different ways to dare i say, make their LCD panels look better than the other guys. Take Sharp for instance. Sharp measures the time it takes from fully open to fully closed and back to fully open as the response time. Now this is also full white to black to white. Samsung on the other hand measures the same thing but only from white to grey to white. Problem here is that there are on average 4096 shades of grey on the best of panels. But which grey are they using? We don't know. If it's the last step of grey before black then great. But what if the grey they use is the next step down from white. Well it would take absolutely no time to get back to white from there. So again i say, LCD is currently limited to a MAXIMUM refresh rate of 4ms. This is not a book number but a physical limitation of LCD technology. Keep mind as well that we are starting to see a lot of televisions with something called 120Hz refresh rates as apposed to the standard 60Hz refresh rate. This is very often confused with response time (4ms/6ms/8ms) and is very often seen on 8ms LCD panels. This does NOT make an 8ms panel a 4ms panel.

You have a valid point.

Excellent points, it seems that not much has changed from the CRT days. That's when manufacturers claimed a 17" monitor was 19"; they measured the 2" plastic bezel around the glass screen. The FTC needs to step up and lay down some rules.

I'll have to research LCD response time some more.

A tasty nugget?

No offense here but LCD response times vary with TEMPERATURE. They results are also skewed (or skewered?) by defining what is off on on. Some have set the bar very low and take measurements in a warm room (80F+) and define that off is 50% of full on.

The BOTTOM LINE is you never want to make your final choice on this spec. You really need to see your product first hand.

Samsung 206BW

by hobbesian - 11/13/07 2:43 AM In reply to: Samsung may be the way to go. by 21144EC

I play a fair number of games and my samsung 206BW copes well. Even if its not a real 2ms time, it`s still pretty fast.

Like most things though, try and see one demonstrated before you buy

I second his suggestion

I agree with crazythaikat. For detail, response time and contrast ratio, a Dell Ultrasharp flat panel in any size is the only way to go.

I am using Vizio

by carmanhere - 11/9/07 11:15 PM In reply to: I second his suggestion by ekent

I found Vizio to be easy on the eyes and the pocket book. Has the hook ups available to hook up your toys and I have found that Vizio has been rated as one of the best flat screen TV's for some time now. In fact I purchased 2 Vizio's. The first I think is a 37" and the second, for myself is the 42" Plasma. I've had no problems and recommend them 100 %. I talked a friend into buying one also. His first statement was why are they so much less then the others? The picture is great. I don't think that you can go wrong. I did it twice. Feel free to contact me. Custmer service is easy and they know what they are doing. 7 days availablity but not 24/7. Plenty of time to call their 800 number. Check some of the PC magazines as to the top flat screen, You'll ss Vizio in there somewhere. And it will probably have the lowest price. GO FOR IT. I did it twice and I recommend them and would buy another if and when the time needs.

Check out viewsonic

by Michael00360 - 11/10/07 6:45 AM In reply to: Help!! I need A Great Flat Screen Moniter For Gaming by Sommer Hyatt

I have a viewsonic 19in. flatscreen monitor that works fine for playing the games like Call of Duty or Half Life 2. While my particular model has been discontinued :( , you can still go to their website and browse the newer models that are out. Remember, don't just look at the size of the monitor, you should also check the other features as well.
