No...

by thesimulacra - 11/8/07 8:26 AM In reply to: Invention? Yes. by krae84

You just contradicted yourself. You wrote that the invention is the multi-touch interface, NOT the iPhone itself. If that's the invention, then it should be the one winning the award, not the iPhone.

Not really...

by schlice - 11/8/07 8:51 AM In reply to: Invention? Yes. by krae84

The multi-touch screen is indeed an invention. But adding that invention to the iPhone means that in the world of smartphones, the iPhone is an innovative product, using a great new, patented UI.

But does the iPhone do something that no other product has ever done?

Zooming in and out: other products have done.
Scrolling on a screen: other products have done.

While it's an innovative way to do it, what it does is not new.

Therefore, the iPhone, as a whole, is not an invention.

Still an Apple Hater

by gdenise - 11/7/07 6:06 PM In reply to: Poll: Time naming the iPhone "Invention of the year" by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Look, I am a thru-n-thru Apple Hater. On top of that, I feel even more strongly about Steve Jobs. I could go on forever about my issues with Apple, their business practices, the fact that Steve Jobs is not a proven business leader or visionary, etc. Or how the iPhone is completely worthless to me because of any number of reasons.

Bottom Line: the iPhone is an invention and, while it may not have made the largest technological leap, it clearly has earned the Invention of the Year award. It has completely changed how people look at cell phones. As usual, Apple's non-computer devices are the standard off what everything else is judged. Apple brought the multi-touch interface screen to the mainstream (microsoft is still trying to work out the bugs in their multi-touch interface device, which is the size of a coffee table).

Would I buy an iPhone? No. Never. Not a chance. As usual, most Apple devices are almost useless in the business world. They cater to non-business functions. But, I must admit, Apple deserves this award.

You've got to be kidding!

I've got no problem with you being an Apple hater. That's your problem. But to say the Steve Jobs is not a proven business leader is like saying the earth is flat. He bought Pixar for what, $50 million? And twenty years later sells it for $7 Billion! He came back to Apple when it was all but dying with a market capitalization around $3 billion and after retooling the OS with the OS his team at Next developed around Unix, has turned Apple into the world's largest computer/consumer electronics company worth over $160 billion. Yes, larger than IBM and more than 3X the size of Sony. I'm not saying he did it by himself – but there is no disputing it happened under his leadership.

Still an Apple Hater

by Remag1234 - 11/8/07 11:06 AM In reply to: Still an Apple Hater by gdenise

gee denise, you do have issues. Do you take meds or them or did you forget to take them. Other than having REAL personal issues with Apple or Steve Jobs you need some professional help. To say Steve Jobs is not a proven business leader or visionary is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Did Micro$oft make the iPod[s] or the DUAL operating system? The answer is a BIG NO. The only thing you stated that makes any sense is your bottom line, which it's all about.
Have a great day and be sure to see your shrink.

Cool Phone, but not the best invention!!!!

by samusgravity - 11/7/07 6:07 PM In reply to: Poll: Time naming the iPhone "Invention of the year" by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Come on... The BEST invention! More like cool. This is not the best invention of 2007! There are many better cell phones out there. I really don't care about the coolness of a person's cell phone, I have a SLVR L2... It doesn't even have a camera! But something like the 1 TB hard drive or Sony's MYLO (My Life Online) is much better than the iPhone. Wait for the 2nd gen!!!

Iphone, the invention of the year?

by edoleiderman - 11/7/07 6:11 PM In reply to: Poll: Time naming the iPhone "Invention of the year" by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

So, is the e-mail an invention superior than the Internet? or the instant messengers are inventions. Both developments, as well as other have played more important roles in this era of communication than the improvement of the already existing marvelous wireless phone.

An assemblage of cool components but an invention?

by autryld - 11/7/07 6:22 PM In reply to: Poll: Time naming the iPhone "Invention of the year" by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Just as an artist can make a creation of found objects, Apple has created a very cool phone out of some very cool inventions. If one can patent the sum of a collection of inventions, one has to ask how many of them were original to Apple.

Invention of the year.

by mitchmullins - 11/7/07 6:24 PM In reply to: Poll: Time naming the iPhone "Invention of the year" by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Well no they did not cure cancer but short of that what better invention do you know of. Innovative, sleek, cool. It is not perfect but clearly the most sophisticated cell phone yet by leaps and bounds. With only minor tweaking it could be perfect.

Invention of the year? No

by jgvillan - 11/7/07 6:25 PM In reply to: Poll: Time naming the iPhone "Invention of the year" by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I grant you this....the iPhone is a very good product...however, Invention of the Year, I would say not.

It's not the first cellular phone (GSM or otherwise), nor the first MP3 player, device to connect to the internet and have SMS texting. Certainly not the first to have a touch screen. Of all things, it still does not have 3G connectivity.

What the iPhone does is make it alittle cooler than other non-smartphones. YES, I said it. It's not a smartphone. In either case, you still can't use it to create and/or edit documents and files. Palm and Windows Mobile can... Besides, how can one invent something that has already been made? Apple just put those together in a more seamless fashion.

If you want to be technical in the PDA/Smartphone/Cell phone department, I would say that Palm was the first to 'invent' the smartphone. Their Treos was the first to come out with a PDA device with a cell phone migrated into its functions. Heck, Palm was the first to actually invent the PDA in the first place. Yes, the company too....by Jeff Hawkins, Donna Dubinsky, and Ed Colligan.

So, what say you? Did Apple invent the iPhone.....no. They just made a product fancier than other cell phones.

No.

by Ed-duh-win - 11/7/07 6:33 PM In reply to: Poll: Time naming the iPhone "Invention of the year" by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I don't think they deserved the title. iPhone didn't invent the cell phones. It didn't invent touch screen. It didn't invent all-in-one phone. It didn't invent music phones. All it did was took all those and put it in a shiny case with the Apple logo on it. Frankly, it is nothing special at all.

Clearly not an Iphone owner.

Clearly not an Iphone owner.

Post 103 of 278

Irrelevant

by schlice - 11/7/07 11:53 PM In reply to: Clearly not an Iphone owner. by mitchmullins

Owner or not, you can't show me anything that the iPhone does that has never been done before. It does the same old things better, that's true. But at the end of the day, it surfs the web, playes movies and music, and is a cell phone. All been done before.

Which still does not qualify it as an invention.

iPhone as Invention of the Year

by jkevinm - 11/7/07 6:49 PM In reply to: Poll: Time naming the iPhone "Invention of the year" by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

You're kidding right? Let's see, Battery doesn't come out, clunky size, only one carrier, small memory, battery doesn't come out, incredibly expensive for the leve of service, graphics are only average, battery doesn't come out, can't be modified to take advantage of current changes already taking place in the market, network is spotty, battery doesn't come out.

There hasn't been so much vapor attached to a device since the Apple Lisa. My description is, Let's take various state of the art features, dumb them down for the masses, lock them up for revenue protection, and see how many we can sell at an absurd price against the competition.

Apples is a brilliant company. Unfortunately, very little of their brain power goes to technology any more. Most of the brains are engaged in Marketing.

It's not an invention

by grifpix - 11/7/07 6:54 PM In reply to: Poll: Time naming the iPhone "Invention of the year" by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The iPhone is simply a logical extension of existing technology. Admitedly, it is a nice integration of features but not an invention. Just shows you what you can do if you throw enough money at an idea and hype it enough to get people to pay about $300 above the competition just to have something "cool".
