The same problem with the same model
I previously posted before that the repair shop said they could get a graphics card for it (supposedly it comes separate) and cost too much to replace. Currently I'm still using the laptop and it works fine for "normal" stuff - email, MS Office, surfing etc - just can't play games or anything on it.
However - now I'm doubting that verdict. I've been looking all over the internet for the separate graphics card to no avail - all I can find is a system board that insists the graphics chip is on-board... and I've found this system board for around $450.
So... I'm now considering cracking the laptop open myself and seeing what I can see...
(I can hear the "I told you so"...
)
Just wondering, there's a place in Tampa. FL. called Laptop TEK that says they can fix this problem. I found them on ebay...should I be leery of this company?
They cannot confirm that they've seen this problem before, but do the experienced folks out there know if this is a possibility?
I've also seen these ads on Ebay, and I personally just don't trust it. The other posts on this thread from folks more knowledgeable than I in this have stated that repair is flaky at best.
There is no cheap fix for this one. We have covered the BGA and parts issues so please use the discussion's posts.
If you didn't catch the drift here, repair is well beyond reason for 99.99% of electronics repair benches you see today. You replace the board with the issue.

Just to give a background on the my laptop problems.
1. Vertical lines on the screen for the past month.
2. Horizontal lines on the screen for the past 2 weeks.
3. Dark screen after login for the past week. I can only access my laptop by running in Safe Mode.
Environment:
Presario X6000 Pentium 4 3.2 GHz. (2 years old)
Win XP SP2
1.5 GB RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon X600 128 MB
Shorten Actions taken:
-. Download latest ATI driver from Compaq/HP (dated either 2006/2007, forgot about it). Install this driver and it did not solve the problem. Problem 3 persist.
-. Order New Screen and replace it. Solve problem No 1.
-. Reboot in Safe Mode and delete ATI Radeon X600 under Display driver. Then reboot again. Then install the driver that comes with recovery CD. This step solved problem 2 & 3.
Just curious why the latest driver from HP/Compaq caused more problem then the oldest one? I might need to send this comment to HP/Compaq.
Now my computer is working fine.
Hope those steps help anybody not to waster their time with the latest HP/Compaq driver.
re: Banshee1013
I have the exact system as you, and have just encountered the same vpu hardware deadlock error. Have you been able to fix your problem, or hae you settled for using it in the software rendering state? I'm very frustrated with this also...read this thread and tried to fix with no success.
I've pretty much been dealing with just using software rendering, and doing the occasional search for a new mobo (not an easy task).
I would just get a new laptop, but I really like this one, and all the new ones come with Vista :P
Thanks for the quick response...much appreciated. So frustrating to deal with this problem, especially after I already went through a similar issue with HP on my original Pavillion laptop. This current Presario X6000 is the replacement they sent me when they couldn't fix my Pavillion ZD7000's graphic chip.
So I've had 2 HP/Compaq laptops in 3 years...the first one lasted 15 months, and this one lasted about 2 years. That's just unacceptable to me.
My next one won't be an HP product...
