It ain't no invention...but it is the one of the most important developments of the year.
You see, phone manufacturers were sitting on their butts, changing some keys, reshaping the screen, adding some ring tones. Nobody was doing anything fundamental, just minor tinkering here and there (N95 of Nokia with its GPS is an exception).
iPhone came along and shook all those guys out of their slumber. For that alone, Apple deserves its kudos.
But back to the fundamental question of iPhone being an invention - I think the editor of Time magazine should invest in a dictionary.

I have used an iPhone for about three months. Trying to compare it to other devides misses the point. The iPhone is a completely new way of seemlessly integrating phone, inet, pda, and entertainment. I watch colleagues busily tapping away at their Blackberries, working hard to accomplish what seems much easier to do on the iPhone. I am particularily amazed at how easily I can Google and view most websites. I find myself using Google to look up whatever I am curious about, no matter where I am. It is a great innovation.
Uh, I think Time is saying that it is more than just a cell phone, you know with the whole multi-touch interface, mobile internet, exceptional mp3 player, creative OS, etc. You get it now? Let's not be ridiculous (Kent German and friends), the iPhone is more than just a cell phone. The same can be said about the Nokia N95, the Tilt and a handful of other devices.
..not invention. It's clearly the "Innovation of the Year" or even the "Product of the Year," but not the "INVENTION of the Year."
the iPhone is still a cell phone carried on a crappy service (I used to be an AT&T (actually Cingular) customer and their service was lousy. Of course, ALL cell phones are unreliable, but Sprint is at least a little better. I had car cell phones in LA in the late 1980's and early 1990's (the large device in the trunk) that were more reliable than the all-digital cell phones. All the features mean nothing until I can make reliable calls 99% of the time.
All they did was improve the cell phone. There is nothing here except that they merge some technology in to one device. There are more worthy contenders out there.
Actually it is more of a "gadget" composed of many already invented parts. Isn't an invention usually a new technology never seen before (eg telephone, light bulb, CD) or an application of a scientific principle to create a new device (lightning rod, EKG)?
They did not invent the cell phone they only improved on existing technology. They just merge technology into a smaller and more convent size. Nothing new. Other contenders are more worthy.
I bought an Iphone. Took it back the same day when I found out it wouldn't work on my 64 Bit Vista O/S. Stupid on Apples part. That beside the point I now a an ATT Tilt. It cost less than the Apple and it's features make the Iphone look like a joke.
3G - Shares the web connection with my 64 Bit Laptop. DSL speed anywhere I go.
Navigation - With Google or Live Maps I have full blown GPS FREE!
Seamless Sync with my 64 Bit Vista O/S.
STEREO Wireless Bluetooth headset cranks out my Tunes via Windows Media Player.
I can install HUNDREDS of different programs no problem.
A real QWERTY and this fancy Tilt screen.
The list goes on and on. I am so glad I had to take that Iphone back because this Tilt is the coolest travel tool I've owned.
What invention!
This is 1984 all over again.
The iPhone is a completely new engineering of existing technology.
Just as the Macintosh spawned our existing PC interface and, for the most part, the world's concept of computer technology, so will the iPhone.
One thing. Yes the 1984 mac was a pretty big evolution, but the pc didn't evolve off of it. And, we are not going to worship and use a device which has sluggish 2 g speeds, and STARTING at $50 a month for basic data! It will be obsolete soon, and it has been outfeatured right now. And, other phones will not evolve off of this small "invention."
Time chose a device that in a year will be obsolete.
I would have chosen a device the will help people like a new medical diagnostic device or a new way to overcome a illness or advancement in prosthesis.
come on, it's just a freakin phone ....sure, it has a lot of bells and whistles, but Invention of the Year? Hardly! It's a nice phone, FINE, but like they say, it's the network, it's all about the network.
The phone is a device to allow network access, voice, data, video. A device is innocuous today, it's a laptop, a PDA, a smartphone, and whatever new device comes along next.
data. data speeds. data price. iphone has dial-up like speeds with it's non-3g stuff. And, the prices are gonna make you sell your house! starting at $50 for basic data plan and speeds! No no no no no no no no no! Sure, it's nice and stuff, but really! NO!
