My news HP Vista operating System would not go to sleep and stay a sleep. It would start up again after any where from 10 seconds to 5 minutes or more. It drove me nuts. I finally figured out the solutiohn after much reading. Go to: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00845808&dlc=en&product=3377278&lang=en&printable=yes&encodeUrl=true&
This site really helped. My problem was my DSL modem was on all the time. Went to Start, right click computer, select properties, select device manager, network adapters, double click on your dsl or what ever it is called and open properties. Click the power management tab and remove tyhe selection from Allow this device to wake the computer. Hope this will help others since it really fixed my sleeping problem and had nothing to do with Vista
Your solution seems to work on my machine also: HP Slimline 3123W desktop. May experiment with restoring other changes to get sleep to work properly now that I have gone to Start, right click computer, select properties, select device manager, network adapters, double click on your dsl or what ever it is called and open properties. Click the power management tab and remove the selection from Allow this device to wake the computer. I had used recommended steps from HP: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00845808&dlc=en&product=3377278&lang=en&printable=yes&encodeUrl=true&

This really helped me fix my HP sleep problem. I had called Verizon, they were so dumb and I think I was talking to some guy in India!
Thanks again.
I found this and it work. If it works for you spread it around for others. I have spent DAYS and DAYS doing searches.

Problem: when selecting "Sleep", the PC goes to sleep for about 10 seconds and then wakes itself up.
Solution:
1) Start > Control Panel > Power Options > High Performance
2) Start > Control Panel > Device Manager > Keyboards > select your keyboard > right click + Properties > Power Management > make sure the box is unchecked for "Allow this device to wake the computer"
3) Start > Control Panel > Device Manager > Mice and other pointing devices > select your mouse > right click + Properties > Power Management > make sure the box is unchecked for "Allow this device to wake the computer"
4) Close Device Manager window
5) Start > Sleep
6) Your PC will now go to sleep. To wake it up, push the large power button on the front of your PC (not the smaller reset button).
Although you can't use the keyboard or mouse to wake your PC up, this solution does allow you to put your PC to sleep and wake it up. At least it works on mine now.
All I had to do was go through the device manager components, look for a "power management" tab for each component (they don't all have such a tab), uncheck the "Allow this device to bring computer out of sleep mode" box, go to next device, etc.
I presume that you could keep the mouse (for example) checked, then that would allow you to move the mouse to bring the computer out of sleep mode, but I haven't tried that (yet). I also presume that it is not the mouse or keyboard devices that is causing the problem for most people. Rather, it is probably something like a network adapter on a LAN system which is waking the computer up soon after going to sleep(immediately for some).
This advice saved me from going out of my mind. I tried so many things, but this was the answer.
I too had problems with sleep mode as my computer would not reawaken from sleep mode. I have a HP Pavillion a1700n with NVIDIA Geforce 6150 LE graphics built into the mother board. I recently added GeForce 8600 GT PCI-E video card and the problem has completely disappeared and all sleep mode functions have been working perfectly for 6 weeks. The new graphics card is designed for VISTA. No other changes were made to my system or computer. The video drivers must be involved.

I AGREE, THIS ABOVE MENTIONED FIX WORKED ALSO WITH MY VISTA HOME PREMIUM MACHINE. IT WAS THE NETWORK SETTING. VISTA HAS BEEN VINDICATED FROM THIS ISSUE.

MANY THANKS! 2 hours with HP chat and it didn't work! All the person had to say was "probably modem problem". Your ref to HP's site gave me the wherewithal to fix the problem in 15 minutes. The computer now sleeps soundly!
You're welcome. Sad commentary about HP chat / technical service though. I had similar experience with an other issue: two + hours of support diagnostics, call backs and other technicians, and the issue all along was found via changing setting noted in a less than five minute fix from a forum.
Oh well, thanks to us geeks sharing, issues (not problems) get explained and straightened out.
Pay it forward.

I keep gettimg pop-up about driver blocked/Sonic Solutions DLA. How do I get rid of this? Thanks Gar
It's been written that bad things can happen if you force drivers onto Vista. It's time to uninstall this one.
The pop-up says due to driver imcompatability. Cannnot put to sleep, have to log off. Where do I find system info? I did not install computer. GAr

Really Solved Sonic Solutions DLA driver blocked
It's a slightly different issue that was discussed but it may fix your problem.
Hope this helps.

I have found that my computer is fully functional after my computer monitor goes black, after being idle for a time. I can't get video back though. By that, I mean the Caps Lock key works, Num lock key works... The machine isn't hung. I am using a board that displays POST info on-board and I know it is running fine. I just don't have video anymore. The screen is black and there is no signal on video no matter what I do, move the mouse and tap some keys and nothing... @#$%!!!
This doesn't happen every time so there is no quick way to form a hypothesis. I have all screen blanking turned off I think in Vista. I am a UNIX guy so any advice would be appreciated.
