Variable speed playback on MP3 players?

by iwinklercnet - 9/15/07 7:08 PM

I listen to a lot of podcasts, and I usually listen on my PC with Windows Media Player. I increase the speed to 1.4 or 2x and can still listen comfortably. (I know - I should listen to fewer podcasts...)

Are there any mp3 players that can do this? I think the iriver clix can. Are any of the iPods able to do this? I have not seen this documented anywhere ... I guess this is not that popular a feature.

Thanks!

Variable playback speed

by Jasmineflower CNET staff - 9/17/07 11:16 AM In reply to: Variable speed playback on MP3 players? by iwinklercnet

You're right in suggesting it's not the most popular feature--in trimming the fat off our reviews, we usually choose to exclude extras that we perceive as having less interest than other information. Variable playback speed is one that invariably gets left by the wayside. However, a reasonable selection of players offer this feature, and--usually--if one player by a specific company offers it, you can reasonably assume that most fully-featured devices made by the same company will offer it as well.

It is mentioned in the iRiver N10 review -- http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-players/iriver-n10-512mb/4505-6490_7-31164331.html

Just confirmed its existence on the iRiver Clix: http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-players/iriver-clix-4gb-second/4505-6490_7-32327766.html?tag=prod.txt.2

The Samsung YP-T9 has this feature also: http://www.cnet.com/portable-video-players-pvps/samsung-yp-t9-4gb/4505-6499_7-32081083.html?tag=prod.txt.1

Variable playback speed - iPod family?

by iwinklercnet - 9/17/07 12:04 PM In reply to: Variable playback speed by Jasmineflower CNET staff

Jasmine,

Thank you for your reply! Would you know if any of the iPods do this also? I have been thinking about the iPod Touch, and it would fit my needs better if it could do this. I would love to see a Clix vs. Touch review!

(I generally listen to podcasts at 1.4 - 2x. Molly's rants really sound funny at 2x!! I love the Insider - keep up the great work!)

Variable Speed Playback

by DaniHome19 - 9/23/07 4:40 PM In reply to: speed control on mp3 player by DGerst1

I am going to try the Samsung YP-T9. According to the website http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/detail.do?group=mp3audiovideo&type=mp3players&subtype=flashmemory&model_cd=YP-T9JAB/XAA it has Variable Playback Speed - speeds or slows the music playback between -3x and 3x.

Variable Speed Playback - Samsung YP-T9J

by DaniHome19 - 10/14/07 8:46 AM In reply to: variable speed playback by DGerst1

I finally had a chance to buy and gave it a first try today. First impression is very good. Let's you speed up three settings up and three down. Obviously the pitch changes, but that doesn't bother me. I am more interested in adjusting tempo for exercise/running. Also stores something like 20 bookmarks. So far I am really satisfied.

Yes ipods have variable payback for audibooks

by Fossilkey - 10/28/07 6:45 PM In reply to: Variable playback speed - iPod family? by iwinklercnet

I have both an ipod nano (2nd generation) and an Iphone. They both have variable playback (normal, faster, slower) but only for audiobooks. This is primarily what I need variable playback for. I NEVER listen to audiobooks on regular speed, it is so slow and boring otherwise. This doesn't apply to podcasts or music however.

The only problem with the ipods is that you can't listen to any audiobooks with windows protected media (most of the audiobooks that I like) which really sucks. So I have been trying (without) success to find out which of the other players (Zen, iRiver, Sony etc.) have this function. I cannot find the information anywhere on-line or by asking the sales people in tech stores. It's like they have no idea what I'm talking about.

The product websites are also really bad. Look at the spec sheets for each player. They list EVERYTHING else except this feature. It's stupid, think about how many more people would be interested in this feature if they actually talked it up. It's annoying having to remain glued to your laptop just to listen to audiobooks instead of having a mobile mp3 player that you can use while traveling, standing in line, etc.

Thanks for letting us know about the iRiver-I'm going to buy it just for this feature.

Thanks for the info! I read about the audiobook feature, but it didn't say anything about mp3's. While not helpful for music, listening to podcasts at variable speeds would be a great feature. I'm still searching...

iPod Variable Speed only on .m4b files

by jj2me - 10/31/07 6:37 AM In reply to: Thanks! - re: Yes ipods have variable payback for audibooks by iwinklercnet

No, iPods don't support variable playback of MP3s, it only offers this feature for files encoded as type .m4b.

So why not use that type of file?

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 10/31/07 6:40 AM In reply to: iPod Variable Speed only on .m4b files by jj2me

File converters are abundant so why not go with what works?

That is, if I own a pod why wouldn't I want to make it work?

Yes, you're right for you or any iPod owner. I was just responding to the person who asked about MP3 podcast support. If they don't own an iPod, then a Clix 2nd gen, for example, would be a simpler choice for variable-speed podcast listening.
