Windows - Virtual memory minimum too low

Hi all,

I have a DELL Inspiron E1505 Core2 Duo.

My config is as shown below

1. 1 GB Ram
2. 80 GB HDD (Only one partition 15 GB free)

I am suddenly getting this probelm of Windows - Virtual memory minimum too low

I was using the same configuration for about 8 whole months and it suddenly can't be the probelm of low RAMor something. I changed the Virtual Memory settings and the system started behaving funny. What is the perfect setting/default setting. Also is it a spyware that is causing it. How do I avoid this probelm. Sometimes my programs are closed abruptly

Return the values for system managed.

Virtual RAM (aka the pagefile) should be set to be about 150% of physical RAM. So about 1535kb, in your case.

Off is not an option ....

In modern operating systems, including Windows, application programs and many system processes always reference memory using virtual memory addresses which are automatically translated to real (RAM) addresses by the hardware. Only core parts of the operating system kernel bypass this address translation and use real memory addresses directly.

Article also states:
All processes (e.g. application executables) running under 32 bit Windows gets virtual memory addresses (a Virtual Address Space) going from 0 to 4,294,967,295 (2*32-1 = 4 GB), no matter how much RAM is actually installed on the computer.

So by eliminating the swap file or setting limits you are actually hurting performance.

Thus my first post to allow Windows to manage swap file. Windows will expand or contract the swap file as needed increasing performance.

In fact I get faster shutdown/startup times.

Windows only references memory to the page file in its idle time. But when I have so much RAM, and I don't do system intensive tasks, having things paged to memory when I have 95% physically memory free is pointless, and by having my computer as I do now I eliminate the lag you get after coming back to the computer after a few hours or days of idle time.

Trust me on this, I'm not what you could call your "average user" - I know the ins and outs of Windows to know that if it really wanted the pagefile on, and needed it, it would turn it on. Same with MSCONFIG. People end up peeing their pants about it, yet if the OS needs something to run, it will re-enable it no matter what you do.

It all ties in with WINDOWS FILE PROTECTION.

I simply don't need 2 Gigabytes of my 40GB of Hard Disk space being eaten by a redundant file paging data to the Hard Disk when I have bags of memory. Catch my drift?

My response to your post on turning off virtual memory is information for the "average user" on a very complex subject and possible issues that may arise.

Happy to hear that you have no issues, faster shut down time, whatever, but what of the "average user" when their system exhibits issues trying to follow your lead?

So I "catch your drift" .....
