Forget bittorrent, Comcast throttled Gamespot

by Ken from Chicago - 10/23/07 5:01 AM

I was downloading a demo of SETTLERS IV from Gamespot a few weeks ago and it took about an hour to download the 1.4 gig file--but I was typing on the computer just as it was finishing and ... yes, long-time downloaders know or can guess ... I pressed the space just as download window popped up as it was going from the internet temporary file to the target directory and inadvertantly cancelled it. I was royally ticked off.

But wait, there's more.

After trying in vain to find the file in the temporary files, I go back to Gamespot to download the file again, resigned to waiting another hour--when I see the download rate is one TENTH of the rate it was before from 300k to about 30k per second and it would take TEN hours to download! Now other files downloaded at the higher rate but that file was gonna take ten hours.

Has it happened to someone else downloaded a large (say over a gig) file?

Ok.. I just went to a meeting @ the call center today and that subject came up...

They mentioned that they don't STOP any traffic.. they just DELAY it (this is not a quote)

This a personal interpretation based on WHAT IS BEING SAID INT HE BLOGOSPHERE... NOTHING MORE, NOR IS THIS STATING WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING..

What I think could be happening is that the servers for comcast will limit during peak times and send the "RST" commands to stop this (simpleist way) and during non peak times they let so much go though....

So honestly I don't know what they are doing.. and I don't like it.. I wish they would be more open about it....

I just finished downloading a 1.5gb demo using the Gamespot little download manager with Comcast. I was at a constant stream of 250KB/s which is pretty average for the free servers... or IS it? hmmm. I hope they aren't throttling it, because torrents have become useless to me. Even when I was downloading the new Ubuntu, it was faster to do ftp.
