Verizon's smartphones - what's the deal?

by trafficguy00 - 10/1/07 7:28 AM

Why is Verizon so slow to release new smartphones? Their current offering is OLD, very old in the cell phone world. They are offering the Palm 700 series as well as the xv6700 (yes, they have the new Motorola Q, but I'm looking for a touch screen). Meanwhile, Sprint is offering the Mogul (similar HTC device as the rumored verizon xv6800), the Palm 755(p) and the Samsung IP-830w. So what's Verizon's holdup? The xv6800 has been rumored to be on the verge of release since last spring. Any ideas as to when these new phones will be available and why generally Verizon is so slow to release these phones?

I agree

I've never had a bad verizon experience, but now that I'm ready to upgrade to a smart phone, the options are limited. Personally, I'm waiting for the sch-i760. It looks pretty sweet, but they haven't announced a release, and the verizon reps pretend to now even know they exist...

I can understand the frustration

Compared to the other carriers, Verizon is definitely lagging in terms of updating its smart phone lineup. I'm really not sure what the hold up is, but I know that can be frustrating as a customer. Unfortunately, I don't have any specific release dates for the Samsung SCH-i760, UTStarcom XV6800, Palm Treo 755p, but I do think it'll be in time for the holiday shopping season. Also, Research in Motion just announced today the RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8130, a CDMA version of the Pearl with GPS, and said the handset should be available in November, so that's something to look forward to. Of course, we'll be sure to keep you updated with news and reviews as soon as we have the information. Thanks!

Holiday season?

I sure hope so... My barely functioning Razor is driving me up a wall. The pearl sounds like it would be nice too, but the 8830's keyboard is way too close together and slippery for my gigant-o thumbs... Hopefully it will be better than that.

Don't forget the state-side version of the Prada Phone...

Verizon is purpotedly going to bring this over here at a more reasonable price as the LG ke850. Last I heard it'll run WM6! w00t! I don't know when they said they'd expect it, tho.

Verizon released the sch-i760 on it's site today! I'm too excited. Can't wait to see what cnet has to say.
