The EXPLORER process, or calls related to it, aren't working right. Twelve posts and we have made... no progress. I read somewhere as well that Roxio 9 and Windows XP do not work very well - at all.
Open control panel, on upper left corner click on classic view, click on taskbar & Start menu, this will open a new window, click on taskbar, click on make taskbar always visible, click on show clock, click on apply and accept.
Next click again in taskbar & Start menu, click now on start menu, check that start menu is marked, then click on personalize, click on advanced options, check that the wanted items are marked as: execute command, printers & faxes, my PC, etc. again accept, apply and accept.
Retun to control panel, click on screen, check that a theme is selected, wallpaper, click on desktop, personalize desktop, general, click on restore default values, click on accept, go to appereance and check that everything is correct.
Don't forget to see what's in her desktop folder as someone said, with Explorer go to Drive C:, Documents and settings, "HER NAME", Desktop. There must be her desktop icons (just the shortcuts & files).
With Explorer also, go to Desktop (The upper part of the tree) and check if there are the System Icons, My PC, Recycle Bin, My Network places, My Documents, etc.
Foregive the translation, my Windows is in spanish, but the terms must be similar.
Hope this help.
I had a computer to repair with the same symptoms. Finally discovered that some how the shell entry got hosed from the registery. It was blank. Typed the entry back in and that restored everything. Explorer is used to create the shell (desktop, icon, taskbar & etc.) To check if this is the problem use the task manager to run regedit and go to this key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>MICROSOFT>WINDOWS NT>CurrentVersion>Winlogon and in the right pane will be an entry named Shell. It's value should be Explorer.exe.
Disneyfan, Try the "Remove Restrictions Tool (RRT)" which you and download for Free at the link below. That problem you're having is usually the result of a virus/malware infection. I'd make sure that you update your virus definitions as well as any anti spyware updates and run full scans.

I had the same problem a while ago and this worked for me. Start comp in safe mode and use arrow keys to go to "start computer with last known good configuration" or words to that effect. Comp restarted and job was done. I would make sure you have cleared everything from Roxio 9 first if you can.
Please help. I need this software for my computer that is down. I cant download it to the sick computer because I cant access the internet. Do I download it to my laptop and save to a cd?? Please help.
skyhi2008, Yes, download it to a CD then transfer the CD to the problem computer and transfer the file to the problem computers hard drive then run it.
Make sure you boot in to Safe Mode to use Remove Restrictions Tool (RRT).

Thank you, Disneyfan, for asking your question.
I'm surprised that out of all the 19 replies thus far only David82140 suggested System Restore. Whenever things go strangely awry I learned a long time ago to stop wasting precious valuable time with trying to troubleshoot a bizarre problem by simply going straight to step-number-1, namely System Restore, ... except there was this one time when I had also lost my System Restore and so I first had to go onto the Internet to download the “sysres.dll” file and put it back into C:WINDOWS\system32 folder and then I was able to use System Restore again. There was another time when I tried sha2's suggested method of going through safe mode and clicking on "start computer with last known good configuration" but it still didn't fix my problem. So then I went to System Restore and went a little farther back in time to a better restore point and was able to fix the problem.
Sounds like you should be able to reach System Restore through one of the accounts that still works okay. I wish you well and thanks again, Disneyfan, for asking. Tsark out.
ps. You might want to notice that David82140 had shared pretty much the exact same problem that your friend has and yet David82140 is the only one to claim to have quickly fixed the problem via System Restore by reverting the computer back to a point in time before the problem occurred as if the problem never occurred in the first place. Go through Start/Programs/SystemRecovery/and then click on and open up SystemRecovery. Then make sure to choose “Microsoft System Restore” button and NOT “System Recovery”. After System Restore opens choose a restore point before the Roxio was installed and more than likely it should list the day and time when Roxio was installed and that would normally be the restore point to choose that will revert the computer back to the point in time BEFORE the Roxio was installed.
Just a bump so another member will find this today.
pss. If for any reason you're unable to find System Restore via Start Menu via Programs then you can go through Start/Run/type in “%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe” (without quotation marks) and click OK or hit Enter which will open up System Restore.
sha2 also had the same problem and was able to fix the problem via safe mode via "start computer with last known good configuration" which is more or less the function of System Restore.
