Absolutely untrue. Why would you want wide angle for family? Wideangle is for landscape and architectural.

It depends on how big your family is. If you whole clan wants to fit in one photo, then wide angle will help. But for the usual family size of 4-5, you don't need a wide angle. Just step back and they should fit nicely. Actually for close up portraits it is better to use a mid tele lens (with 35 mm equivalent 80-110mm focal length). Wide angle lens can give you perspective distortion, and usually not used for portraits.
