I have not had a cell phone regularly since 2004.
I have not had one since June30,'07.
I would love to have one for emergencies while driving only.
I think this generation is lacking for manners in all walks of
life, not just with cell phones.
I have visited my youngest daughter and she would be on the phone
my whole visit. I seldom visit anymore, because of it.
Not only her, but in a crowd, People act like it is glued to there
ear. What has become of people. Rudness is unheard of by them, if
you mention it to them they just make a ugly, remark, like you don't
even matter.
God only knowes what has happened to this generation.
I am 66yr of age, a retired nurse, and this world has been progressing
so fast, the teen agers and generation above them, or so spoiled
it is pitiful, no respect for anyone older than them, in anycase.
So selfish, it is disgusting, and no one correcting them. There are a very few who are civilized anymore, I dread becoming older, although I feel young now. This younger generation has no respect for others who have more experience in
life, and professions. They come out of school with an attitude that
they know everything . I retired because of health, and the disrespect
of new students coming out of school.
We were taught to respect our elders. they just push us aside like we don't even matter.Accuse us of having Alzimers if we try to tell them anything about rudness, or anything of that matter.
Rudness is an epidemic in this sociaty.Especially Cell phone etiquite.
I said Maybe, I first brought my cellphone for my car, to keep there in case of a breakdown, but then I took it inside for use for everything else..It keeps me in touch with everyone, but I will not give up my landline, it is important to have a corded phone in house for emergencies, like when there are blackouts, or when I have bad connections with my cellphone inside my building..I like my cellphone , but use it only if I have too outside, or if someone calls me..I rarely call on my cellphone when I am home..majority of calls are incoming.
Maybe because I carry the phone with me but switched off I only have it in case of emergency
Stay safe Tinderbox
I could actually live without any phone, but society requires contact in some form. I replaced my home phone with a cell phone years ago and haven't thought back on it. I am an infrequent user of all phones. Even the one sitting on my desk at work. I use it only when absolutely necessary. Used to be cell phones were only phones, but so many things are tied into them now. For example, my road service is tied into my cell phone so couldn't leave home without it even if I wanted to. I'm still one of those people who want a phone that is just a phone (no cameras, MP3 players, ect...).
For me it depends on the situation, for example, if I drive I always take the mobile..why? Apart from the obvious that I may need to call my mechanic to repair the car etc.....In my case it was this...I always took my mobile everywhere while driving, however one day I couldn't as the mobile didn't work (I had to buy another). While driving on my way back from work that evening I had an accident in the car...a lady didn't stop at the STOP...and this was the only time I didn't have my mobile while driving....Another reason for me to have it is for when my daughter is at school..My wife and I aren't always at home, we're at work, therefore they can easily contact one of us....
Obviously there are many many reasons to have one but just as many NOT to have one with you all the time.
I'd drop it in a minute except try to find a pay phone these days. Because of the inexpensive cell phones, not many people use pay phones any more. Otherwise I'd drop mine in a heart beat.
When I had this accident, I had to walk nearly 2 miles to call home!!
I need a phone for my children's school and holiday club to phone me in an emergency (especially as one of them has a health problem that means they can need to get in touch with me quickly) and being stuck if the car breaks down on my own with 3 special needs kids and no way to phone the breakdown company would be horrendus.
These little things can make our lives a little easier. I use to travel a lot to visit family (driving) in Md & VA, and did my vacation and travel mostly in the car so having a cell phone for an emergency call for help was very re-assuring. I'm retired and hope my wife will also be retired soon we will get rid of at least on phone and maybe both. PS finding a pay phone is harder then finding a molar in a chickens mouth!
Unfortunatly cell phone service in this country is really a joke compared to Europe and Asia.
I’m a blackberry user and love the device – however, from time to time I use an earpiece, and when using earpiece, there is a new level of etiquette. I found myself taking for granted others could hear the both sides of the conversation when people around me though I was talking to them. I started placing my hand on my earpiece as a signal to others that I was in fact on the phone (and even some times when I wasn’t!)
I can get along without a cell phone and do 99% of the time, but they can be life savers also. The point is MANNERS, not cell phones. As you might guess, I'm an old dude and it seems that people today are totally wrapped up im ME, ME, ME. Common courtesy hardly exists anymore. I could rattle on, but you get the point......Old Dude
1) As an outdoor photographer, the only uglier blight than cell towers on the landscape are high tension power lines, and cell towers are far more ubiquitous.
2) The last thing I want when I leave the house is phone calls following me. I always wonder if cell phone usage indicates an overinflated sense of importance or a deep-rooted sense of insecurity, not to mention how obnoxious they are in public and how poorly people drive when yapping on them (although they will deny it).
3) Recent studies indicate that they can cause cancer of the brain.
4) For emergencies? What did you do before there were cell phones? You met new people... they help support the individual isolation that is part of what is wrong in this country.
I wish that cell phones would just disappear all of a sudden. In today's setting you are expected to have one of the little devils so that you may be had while sitting in the strangest of positions. Yes I am fully aware these items have an on/off option but most understand my rant. I was glad to see that I voted with the majority.
Anyone seen a pay phone lately? I could maybe live without a cell phone if there were lots of pay phones around everywhere I went. Like the way it was when back in the days when no one needed more hard discs space than 20 mega bytes.
Your remarks about finding no pay phones around reminded me of an incident at a Starbuck's last week. You could hear a young lady having a fight with a supposed boyfriend through the bathroom door. It went on for over 20 minutes. Finally another young lady, patiently waiting to use the only unisex bathroom, went to the manager. The manager implored the young lady to leave the bathroom.
On the way out, she said, "Can't a lady have ANY privacy around here?"
So you see, in their eyes, today's restrooms are fair game as cellphone phone booths.
