Using PC to serve up music
by mister scoop - 10/17/07 1:50 PMI have pre-wired my house for distributed audio and getting ready to buy the hardware so that I can distribute 4 audio sources to each room of the house.
What I want to do with my PC is to store my audio files on it and then be able to stream up to 3 songs at once (1 each to three rooms).
Do I need three sound cards to pull this off? I have an Athalon 64 3000 processor and 1 GB PC3200 ram. 5.1 sound is built in.
Additionally, is it possible to have 2 or 3 Windows Media Players running at once? If I had three different media players, could each be set to only play through one specific sound card?

Having 3 audio cards on one computer might create conflicts. Of course playing 3 songs at the same time is certainly doable but separate them to different ports maybe another story though.
Not in Windows.

And not easy or cheap with sound cards. What I do own is a MP3 player that connects to wifi or ethernet which you can have more that one of. That may be the solution.
Windows doesn't 'out of the box' support what you're thinking.
