In keeping with a past topic of interest and some reader emails I've received lately, I wanted to open this post as an ongoing thread. It's a bit of a repost, but I wanted the title to encourage people to add information about their own players. I figure this is an easy way to keep track of what devices have autoresume and how it works on different players.
So, a couple of things to answer here:
*What player do you use?
*Does it have autoresume?
*Does autoresume work if you pause the player and it shuts itself down? Or do you have to power off mid-play for the feature to work?
I'll reply to this below with the ones I know, and the ones that have been previously posted or emailed to me.
*Sandisk Sansa m250: 9.5 times out of 10 it will autoresume after I pause and then let it go into stop. -- posted by Beowulfie in the forums.
*Cowan iAudio X5: It resumes when I pause it unless I connect it to my PC. -- posted by deanlowe in the forums
*My poor old beat up cheap iRiver t30 has auto resume. It will autoresume if you turn it off or pause and then let it timeout to off. -- MattB via email
*Creative Zen V: Only autoresumes if you power down while a track is playing; otherwise, starts at the beginning of the track you're on.
*iRiver Clix (gen 2): Will remember where you are in a track, but starts on the track listing screen rather than the playback screen. You must click once on the track to get back to it.
*SanDisk Sansa Clip: Will autoresume if you pause and let it shut down, or if you shut down during playback.
My love/hate relation with Sony continues.
The PSP remembers where it was stopped when playing video & audio. This & the ability to grab RSS podcast feeds via wifi make it a very handy - if bulky - media player. Sadly, it doesn't seem to know what to do with RSS video feeds. A 4Gb memory stick stores more media than you can consume on a battery charge, so that's not really an issue. The low audio levels - especially with converted DVDs (non copy protected of course - calm down MPAA) are very poor, but the auto resume & ability to handle MP4 video makes it a useful media player for long trips ...or waits ![]()
the player I use is a Zen Nano Plus and when ever I pause or turn it off it always resumes where I was. and I believe it also will start where you left off even after a sync. hope this helps ![]()
note:
it also does not interrupt play while scrolling thru the menu. you can also mess with any settings without stoping the music. only stops when you tell it, when you go to radio, or on recording which is expected.
I have a Sansa e260, and it does all of the above! I've never had a problem with auto resume.
yeap my sandisk sansa e280 does it and i love it to bits, only one problem takes a long time to write new data to its memory, apart from that, love it. i can't wait till i can get my hands on the new sansa view. does anyone know how good the sound quality is one that one?
Si.
• I've got the iPod Nano 2nd generation
• Yup, it's got autoresume - my favorite feature, and the reason I won't switch players.
• Works if I pause it and leave it, if I shut it off* (*put it to sleep) , or just change tracks, or sync it with iTunes.
It really surprises me how few players actually offer this. I used to have an old Sandisk Sansa e140, and once tried putting an audiobook on there. After spending way too long trying to fast forward back to where I left off, I gave up on audiobooks. That was before I even found out about podcasts. ![]()
Autoresume works either way if you turn off the player mid-play, if you pause and it goes through auto-shutdown, and if you pause and turn it off. In the case if you pause and turn it off it returns to the same track in the pause state, so really it just makes sense to turn it off. The autoresume and the bookmarking is one of the reasons that the Micro (and I suspect other Creative players) are great for audiobooks and podcats.
By the way I luuuv this player!!!!
Yes, The Zen V+ works that way, but most Creative products give better resume.
There are many of us folks who use MP3 players mostly for podcasts and library audiobooks (OverDrive and NetLibrary), especially us older folks (sigh). Here's a partial list that I know of. I also included PlaysForSure capability, which supports the two free audiobook sources above, and on-player Delete (helpful for making sure you don't listen twice to poorly-named podcasts, like NPR's).

so that restarts are quick, then fully shuts down in a few hours).

How do I know this? I have all the above players (except the V100 and Zen V/V+), plus a Sony NW-S705F [who would ever try to load podcasts using SonicStage!?]). Which is probably why MP3 Insider is my favorite podcast.
- It actually has a "Resume" button on the main menu.
- I've never seen the player shut itself down when paused, but it does shut down when it runs out of batteries. When that happens, the resume point will be the last point in playback before a "proper" shut down, in other words, a shut down initiated by yourself, not the player running out of batteries.
- The resume function works if you pause and shut down or if you just shut down during playback.
I use a Philips EXP2550 MP3-CD Player that has an autoresume function (called "resume") that works when playing regular CDs. It's set via a hard switch on the back of the player.
It allows you to resume playing the CD from the same point that you stopped playing the CD and works even when the player completely shuts down after hitting the "stop" button.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work when playing CDs containing MP3 or WMA files (when the player shuts down it returns to its default settings). In that case, I hit the "pause" button to hold the player's position.
iPod 30 gig
YES it does have an autoresume.
It does both.
*What player do you use?
I have an iRiver T30 1 gig which has been excellent. I added a Zen Stone Plus this summer because of the FM radio function. It is nice having 2 players and each have their strengths and weaknesses.
iRiver T30, 1 gig:
*Does it have autoresume? Yes
*Does autoresume work if you pause the player and it shuts itself down? Yes
Or do you have to power off mid-play for the feature to work? No
I like it because...It uses a AAA battery (I always have a rechargeable ready to go) It is really great for long podcasts because you can navigate even a long file easily. (It has no radio though and the screen is pretty small)
Zen Stone Plus, 2 gig:
*Does it have autoresume? Yes
*Does autoresume work if you pause the player and it shuts itself down? Yes
Or do you have to power off mid-play for the feature to work? No
I like it because...It is tiny. I added a wrist strap from my old cell phone and it is like a wrist band, arm band...all in one. I am REALLY happy with this using audible. It does have auto-resume and I think it is called bookmarking. I can go to other files on the player and when I go back to the book track it starts where I left off. It was a pleasant surprise! (I thought once I left that file, it would go to the beginning the next time).
I use Windows MP for both of them and for the most part have had a great experience. I do however have issues with how files are disorganized on the players, but that could be operator error. I have not made the effort to figure out if there is a way to group them more logically. I primarily use my players for podcasts although I do have music on both and an audible book on the Stone.
iRiver H30 yes
Archos 605 yes.
