Firewall problem.

by ken west - 10/14/07 1:07 AM

Can someone tell me why, suddenly, WXP is telling me that my firewall is not active when my Zone Alarm seems to work properly? Thanks

Having more than one firewall enabled can cause a conflict. You have to chose which one you want active.

Windows XP Security Center warning re Zone Alarm

by Bkess - 10/15/07 9:27 PM In reply to: ken west by tomron

I've been using XP/Zone Alarm/AVG for at least 2 years and just began getting these messages immediately following power up back in late July. I get them for Zone Alarm and/or AVG and they have continued to appear intermittently ever since. I may go 4 or 5 days with no warning then get it for a day. Once it comes on it does not go away but can usually be eliminated by a reboot.
I believe they are all 'false' reports as AVG and ZA are operating normally in spite of the warnings. I suspect a timing problem in the power up sequence such that Windows checks their status too early, then ignores then once they activate.

Try restarting Security Center service of XP

by Donna Buenaventura Moderator - 10/14/07 9:25 AM In reply to: Firewall problem. by ken west

Start>Run then type SERVICES.MSC
Click OK
Locate Security Center service then double click to bring up the properties.
Click Stop button. Let Windows stop it.
Restart the system (Security Center of XP) should start again and see if it now detects properly the status of your ZA firewall.

An added explanation..

by Carol~ Moderator - 10/14/07 2:43 PM In reply to: Firewall problem. by ken west

Ken..

Only an "fyi", if you're interested to know why. When you installed Zone Alarm, it automatically turned off Windows Firewall. Hence the complaint from the Security Center.

another case

WXP did not recognize the firewall Comodo at one time.
Now it does. Who changed what is uncertain.

Same thing is happening to me

by Veitmusicfreak89 - 10/15/07 3:44 PM In reply to: Firewall problem. by ken west

I am having the same Win XP pop up. Windows firewall is off. Nothing went wrong at all when updating ZoneAlarm. It just shutdown then restart (when updating) as normal only this time this happens. For me though this only happens every other start up. Or the warning goes away.

Tried Disabling Windows Firewall Notifications Like This?

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 10/15/07 5:20 PM In reply to: Same thing is happening to me by Veitmusicfreak89

Open the Control Panel, double click on the "Security Center" icon, then click on the "Change the way security center alerts me" link on the left side. When that opens, UNCHECK the box next to the Windows Firewall listing.

Hope this helps.

Fire wall in Xp says it is not on

by jschear - 10/16/07 1:20 AM In reply to: Firewall problem. by ken west

Xp does not like to run two firewalls at the same time so when you installed Zone Alarm it turned off Xp'firewall. If you go to the Xp security center go to firewall and you will see a drop down box that will tell you that you choose to use zone Alarm and turned off Xp"s firewall. Not to worry you are covered

Security Warning

by hendos4 - 10/16/07 6:23 AM In reply to: Firewall problem. by ken west

I just found the same problem on a friends computer, the warning seemed to restart after the lateswindows updates she said. Turning on the security centre in services did not stop it. If you find the same thing, the next time the warnig comes up clickon it to open the security centre & choose change the way Security Centre Warns me & un-tick the firewall & Antivirus. But only if you are sure that they are working properly.

Avast vs. AVG

by colclasure.t - 10/16/07 9:12 AM In reply to: Firewall problem. by ken west

I started getting the same alerts after I switched from AVG anti-virus to Avast. Avast does include a disclaimer about having a conflict with Zone Alarm firewall and recommends a specific setup. I used the recommended setup and still occasionally get the alerts. I just shutdown and restart Zone Alarm to clear the alert.
