HTC T-mobile Wing VS. iPhone

by ibse18 - 10/10/07 8:22 AM

Help! I've been going back and forth for days in my mind for which smartphone to go with; the t-mobile wing or the iPhone. This will be my first smart phone (current have a Razr) and I'm looking to use it for web browsing, text messaging, music/video and games! In other words, I'm not a business person looking to sync this and that, have email updates, etc...

My concern with the iPhone is its SOLE reliance on a multi-touch screen; no 'manual' QWERTY keyboard or additional buttons. *I'd also be getting an unlocked version as I'm not with AT&T/Cingular.

My concern with the Wing is web browsing capabilities and video clarity. I also don't want to have to purchase a game each time I want something new; being able to download/install one right from my phone would be ideal. I've also heard negative things about the memory in the Wing.

Someone please help! I'm excited to get this going! :)

Get the iphone

by Eballs - 10/10/07 10:01 PM In reply to: HTC T-mobile Wing VS. iPhone by ibse18

It has more of the fun capability you are looking for. The Wing has programs like Microsoft Office that are for suits in the business world and not for fun. The iphone is the way to go. Great internet, great media, and it is surprisingly easy to text on...

Be Wary

Normally I would say go with the iPhone-especially if you'll primarily be using it for web access. But if you're not with AT&T and you plan on using an unlocked phone I hope you are tech savvy and understand that your phone may be temporarily or permanently bricked at times by Apple updates that disable the capabilities of unlocked phone. This has already happened although hackers are always able to come up with a workaround. If you can deal with all that then the iphone is the way to go. If it sounds like a hassle, go with the Wing. Its interface isn't as pretty, but it works and is pretty cool.

Wow. After "Eballs" comment I was pretty much set on the iPhone; it made a lot of sense considering my use was for fun and games and internet etc. However, I'm NOT with AT&T and wouldn't consider myself tech savvy...I've heard though that you can set your iPhone to NOT automatically update and NOT update iTunes on your computer past v7.3 and you should be good to go. Is this not the case? Can I not set my phone to update only when I tell it to? Will updates always be something I'd have to worry about?

Thanks.

Curious

I am curious to know, given your needs from a phone, why you aren't willing to wait for the Sidekick LX to arrive.

In regards to the iPhone, it is a good thing for phones to update because some features are added and things are patched so the idea of disabling the auto update feature would be a horrible mistake. I would also recommend taking a look at what phones importers are currently offering to see if any of those phones peak your interest.

Good point regarding the Sidekick LX. I did do some research on the Sidekick Slide. However, with both, I wasn't confident in their (non)touch-screen capabilities. That's something I'd also like. I'd go with the LG Voyager in a heartbeat that's coming out, but I've heard there's no SIM card (as with Verizon) so it's a non-issue unless I switch carriers, which I'm not willing to do at this time.

sidekick lx and iphone suck

by panaphobic - 5/15/08 7:51 AM In reply to: Re: Sidekick by ibse18

the sidekick lx is a piece of crap. i went through 4 of them before i got ride of it. they always break, even when you take really good care of it. don't go with the iphone. it sucks to if it's unlocked. beside the automatic updates disabling your phone, they're coming out with another iphone sometime this year. i had a tmobile wing, and i really enjoyed it. it did bog down a lot, and i eventually upgraded to an htc TyTn II (or the at&t tilt, they're the same) the tilt and wing are nearly the same, but the tilt is twice as fast (400MHz processor), it has twice the RAM/ROM, and it has a 3.2MP camera built in. plus it runs on windows mobile 6 which is surprisingly nice. not a big fan of windows, but i like mobile 6. and if you want the iphone look, they make a program to run the iphone GUI on windows mobile. then when you have that, and you see someone you know with the iphone, just go up to them and show them your "iphone" with a QWERTY keyboard and 3.2MP camera, and then show them DOOM, or Age of Empires, or play SNES and NES on an emulator on the phone! that's what i do :)

This cel phone has issues

by edhanley - 8/16/08 12:55 PM In reply to: HTC T-mobile Wing VS. iPhone by ibse18

I have had this phone now for over a year and all I can say is "IT SUCKS". I have been a T-Mobile customer for over 5 years and I'm one of their platinum customers due to my account being large and longstanding.

Its a SLOW running version of Windows Mobile v6. The screen response to touch commands is very slow. It takes seconds for it to respond. I have done complete reboots to factory software to see if it was any added software from me causing this, but was not the case. It just has a slow running CPU. I have friends with the same Windows Mobile v6 OS on other model cell phones that run much faster.

The back of the phone has a sliding plastic case that does not stay clicked in. And I have not yet been able to locate a replacement part from T-Mobile on this back plastic case. I have gone into their stores and called them.

The phone always wants to slide out its keyboard slightly if you hold it too tight.

It constantly dials the last phone call that you completed since the Green call button presses down easily in the belt pouch. You always have to put the phone in Lock Mode to stop these accidental button presses. It also Hangs Up on calls since its so easy to press the Red hangup button. The hang ups happens more often when its in the belt pouch when using a bluetooth headset. You constantly have to put the phone in Lock Mode to avoid this issue which is a pain doing so.

All in all, this cell phone just sucks. I can't wait to get a new one that is better at running Windows Mobile v6 (Non exist from T-Mobile). So I'm just waiting for my contract to expire so I can move over to a provider with FAST Internet connectivity and a faster cell phone OS. I'm looking at the iPhone 3G as the next one.
