Ok, so...I don't understand all this...things you are saying. Like, when it's not words, jsut letters, I don't know what that means(yes, I;m blonde). Basically my One TOuch maxtor thing was working fine and I put all my stuff on it, and then the other day I went to click on it and it said the drive was unavailible and to check it was connected, but it WAS, and it won't work. I don't know what a cmdprompt is so I couldn't try that thing mentioned earlier, and I....jsut don't understand! In idiot terms can someone please try to help me?
You've replied to my reply to gkap. Your reply is void of any details about the drive (Maxtor makes a few models), the OS (I noted it does matter).
If you are not gkap, it may be better to create a NEW DISCUSSION and supply all the details needed for others to help you.
Wishing you the best luck,
Bob
Well everyone else jsut shoved their ''I can't access my Maxtor external hard drive'' problem here so I thought I would.
I don't know what OS means.
Note: If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem.
The above passage is shown with each post you make. I will not ask for such information every time since it would be duplicative.
You are part of the solution, this is not tech support so its up to you to pitch in on the problem.
-> Most of the solutions are in the 50 odd replies. Be sure to go over those so you don't miss a possible cure.
--> If the unit is in warranty, take advantage of that and make it their problem.

First, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I have read every entry and am a little bit concerned about trying an external drive. I am currently using a HP pavilion ze4900 laptop. Have XP Home SP2. System properties says I have a Pentium M?
I hope that is enough info.
I am concerned with filling up my internal drive. This computer is my work computer and all files are critical. My intention was to safely give myself more storage. Is it possible to run the OS from the external drive? Is it worth my money and time? Is it possible to move my OS to the external drive and be assured that if it did crap out that I could retrieve everything? I'm not just storing pic's or movies, I would like to send all documents and program files to the external drive. Is there another way to keep my internal storage from getting used up?
Your backup system should reflect this critical position.
Make a plan with multiple copies and places for the files to be saved and retrieved from.
Bob
Did you have any luck finding a program to work? I doesn't do much good to run chkdsk if the computer does not see the drive in windows explorer. I have not reformatted it in hopes to one day recover all the files I backed up onto this drive.
In the same boat as you.
Jerry
Just like to say a big thankyou to Stefan for the solution.
I spent frustrating days searching various knowledge bases without success, and was beginning to accept that I had lost the contents of my Maxtor - about 10,000 images of our grandchild! A disaster!.
The PCInspector'found' the Maxtor and then I used 'Recover my Photos'program to retrieve all my pics.
Thanks again Stefan,
wishing you a safe return home

Problem: Computer could no longer see the Maxtor 250 GB One touch II external drive.
Fear: Possible loss of all data
Help from Maxtor: Four attempts to help but no effective solution offered - essentially Maxtor was of no help --- they kept telling us ot turn the dirve on and off etc -- some help
Solution:
1.Purchase a hard drive enclosure at CopmUSA part # 317414 for $70.00
2. Carefully open the Maxtor drive and remove the hard drive by carefully unscrewing the dirve and disconnecting the 40 pin ribbon cable from the drive --- (the new enclosure comes with a new ribbon cable) You will have to break the seal and burst the from decorative peice off the pop the rivets off so that the drive slides out of the case
3. Install the hard drive in the new enclousre
4. Connect the enclosure to your computer -- enclosure comes with power supply and USB cables etc.
5. Turn your computer off an back on
6. Drive works as just another disk -- dont need the Maxtor drivers and dont need the Maxtor name
Lesson learned: External drive is comprised of a good ahrd dirve in an enclosure so shop around for a good hard dirve and an enclosure you like and you have an extrnal drive.
The longest time was to to drive to CompUSA -- the actual hard drive work took all of 20 minutes to carefully dismantle and re-install the drive in the enclosure vs. the days taken to agonize over loosing data and depending on Maxtor for help.
Good luck
After reading this solution (and the others referenced), I ordered a USB/1394 external drive case from NewEgg.com (I live 200 miles from anything resembling a CompUsa).

It arrived in three days, proved to be more case than I needed (internal Maxtor drive is only 3.5, this case will handle 5.25 drives), but it came with a drive adapter. In five minutes I had the Maxtor drive removed from the One Touch II case, installed, and running. No need to even restrart the computer; once I powered on the new box, the drive sprang to life and XP immediately recognized it.
Maxtor's box and power supply really do seem to be the problem. Mine freaked out after a power surge, resulting in the dual fast blinking lights. Rather than lose your data, change housings and carry on!
Many thinks to racecardriver and others who posted here.
Seems Im not alone in the Maxtor fiasco.
Just happened to me tonight..well pissed off.
Mine is a 300 gb one touch 2 as well.
Im not very tech minded and was wondering
if it was easy for you to replace the casing because you know what your doing or do you think anyone could do it.
Im not really comfortable busting into this thing myself.
Also, is there a specific size case I need to order?
Cheers
TB
When you mentioned buying a new case, i started thinking i have another drive just like it, let me try switching power sources. Wala.. it booted up, and now my other drive won't work. Case solved, it's the transformer between the drive and the wall and not the drive at all. God only knows where I'll find a new transformer, but i'm so thankful it wasn't the drive, at least i know my data is safe, even if i have to use the other drives power supply and copy stuff over to a third drive :)) Again thank you very much, and for others having this problem...double check your power transformer next time, don't just assume it's a bad drive. :)) Sounds to me like Maxtor may have a problem with their transformers. I've always used Maxtor drives and have always had really really good luck with them, so i'm glad it's not my drive after all.

I Have also experienced this duel blue led rapid flashing on my Maxtor One touch II 300GB HD with USB2 and 1394a fire wire .
My Computer could not find the drive as it never loaded/BOOTED up but this HD was running normal as to sound .. drive rotation , other than the flashing lights which never went to Idle on the 300GB HD .
This ONE touch 300GB HD was LINKED to my pc through a fire wire passed thru ( DAISY CHAIN ) form another Maxtor One Touch 250GB HD. This 250 GB was recognized by my PC AND ITS LIGHT WENT steady ( IDLE ) . Nither of these MAXTOR ONE TOUCH II HD 300GB or the 250GB IN SERVICE FOR OVER 1 YEAR have EVER shown any problem untill now
I Changed out my Fire wire connectionto the 300GB Maxtor HD with no change in the flashing lights or the drive being recognized I also ..Tried a USB 2 connection with same results .
I Contacted Maxtor/Seagate ....service tech.. Was walked through several procedures to see if the drive was present on my PC .
The tech asked about the operation of the drive ..Running... noise . Lights ECT .
This resulted in the service tech stating the he believed the drive had an internal failure . He provided a Segate/maxtor phone transfer to the data recovery dept . I asked the service tech if this One TOUCH was a user serviceable housing as I believed it may be the connection bridge circuit board problem .He stated it was not serviceable.
Maxtor/Seagate Data recovery dept offered an estimated $1,400 bill for full data recovery and tried to obtain a contact number to set up shipment ...lol
I Google the Maxtor One touch Flashing Lights and found this CNET Forum …..
I tried your suggestion since I also had another transformer from my 250GB Maxtor One touch II ….… I had no such luck with such a simple fix ..I tried the other more costly option ( Not the data recovery lol))) and ordered an.. i- rocks 3.5 HD Enclosure
IR-9410ESC 3.5” IDE/IEEE1394a+USB2.0 HDD enclosure from newegg 24.99
Similar to the Maxtor case as it is mostly Metal and supports one touch operation with its own push button LED..This is also firewire with pass thru ( Daisy chain) ability. Note internal mounting of the i-rock HD is not as sturdy as the Maxtor Metal internal bracket . The i-rock is a plastic .vented board .
While waiting for shipment I removed my Maxtor 300GB from it’s One Touch Housing.
I purchased a Maxtor 300 GB..16MB cache ..7200rpm internal ATA/100( Maxtor Basic) 3 year warranty at Staples and installed it into the Maxtor housing to test the housing operation . This matches the One Touch 300GB HD specs ..
Not surprising I witnessed the duel flashing lights on the Maxtor enclosure and the inability of my PC to recognize the new drive for formatting.
(Note this new 300GB internal Maxtor has a Part # STM 3320620A..Which could not be found on the Maxtor site ever when I entered the serial # of the Hard Drive ..?The STM signifies MAXTOR but the 3320620A can only be found under
Seagate Barracuda ST3320620A. The .Maxtor site shows STM3320820A for a 300GB 16MB cache 7200rpm Hard Drive ???? )
I also Loaded the Maxtor ONE touch Software on to my Notebook and tried this new Maxtor internal 300GB placed in the defective 300GB One Touch Housing with the same flashing lights results and no new drive recognition on my note book .
I today recieved and installed the One Touch 300GB HD into my new i-rock 3.5" HD Enclosure
And as you say Wala …the Maxtor One Touch 300GB HD booted up and is now recognized with all my data files intact .
This is an serious problem with the MAXTOR ONE Touch HD port connection interface board that Maxtor /Seagate will not admit/acknowledge or provide reasonable servicing for .
Can any one else find GOOD use for the unused USB 2 cables from my Maxtor ONE touch Drives ..Other than to BEAT Maxtor /Seagate with them ???
Could anyone suggest where/ which casing is required to make maxter one touch II failed drive workin U.K.?
Try this link ....or similar links... I assume the power supply /voltage/ is of concern?
http://www.maplin.co.uk
Look up Hard Drive Enclosures that support {( 3.5 ) inch drives and IDE hard drives connections } as that is the Maxtor drive enclosure size and type of drive connectors ( ATA /100 )( power and data connectors ) that you will need ...in your new external hard drive case .
An aluminum case will dissipate the heat better than a plastic case.. you may find some models with a fan but at a much higher cost and with the added fan Noise ....
Match it to this I-rock model IR-9410C which has both the USB 2.0 and Fire Wire 1394a ( with daisy chain ability ) connections and a one touch LED push button option.. as does the maxtor one touch
try this link. http://www.i-rocksusa.com/produts/ir9410c.html
Note running the onetouch software is not necessary as your pc will assign a drive letter( E ) to your drive and you can access it like any other drive ..the back up utility may not function with theone touch LED ..but there is always .. an XP back up utility in Windows ..( Accessories/..System tools/..Backup/....with the option of using Automated System Recovery or the Back up Wizard )
