by allancaesar1970 - 10/4/07 11:40 PMI have a slow,old pc.i want to use comodo firewall instead of ZA free because ZA slows my pc even more.as for my pc settings and performance,all are already optimized.have used ccleaner,optimize from pcpitstop,registry cleaner,advanced system optimizer.now im contented with tuneup utilities 2007.
back to comodo firewall,what other free security softwares do i need?im currently using KAV 7 but i want to change to avg free for "legal reasons".Is there any other free AV that is better than avg free?Im also using spybot,spywareblaster,yahoo anti-spy.all downloaded here at download.com.Are these enough?my main criteria would be according to my pc performance.low memory usage.Please help.

You do not need all those spyware programs and do not run them at startup. They will conflict and may slow your computer to a crawl. I would use only one spyware program to make certain that your AV has done the job and would run it on demand (do not have it active in memory as a process)
I use Comodo firewall and NOD32. NOD32 has the best long term malware detection rate in the industry and the lowest number of false positives. Avira both free and paid is good as well, but has many more false positives in tests conducted by AV-Comparatives. You may also want to visit the Wilder Security Forum for a lot of good information.

by allancaesar1970 - 10/5/07 10:59 AM In reply to: Help for you by gibbons47will certainly check out wilder security forum.just finished trend micro housecall.no spyware found.i've used comodo for 2 days.just cant figure out how to configure an application to run without comodo asking me to allow or deny.tried to add the application in the application monitor but comodo still asks for action.ive put it in the learn mode.hoped after running the application few times,allowing the app, that if ive turned it on again comodo will just allow it as i had.but it still asks for action.do you know how? i didnt have that with the free zone alarm firewall.was just discouraged with the reviews of the free zone alarm firewall.will try avira after resolving firewall issue.appreciate your input

Comodo is the perfect choice for a free firewall. Then in case of a free AV, the Avira AV stay a must, since AVG Free isn't good enough in term of virus detection, AVAST is better but will slow you down. But you have to buy Avira paid version if you receive a lot of e-mails, since the free version doesn't have an e-mail scanner. I hope you have at least 256Mb in RAM, then you will keep a good speed with your PC.

256 MB in each slot for 768 MB. I use the Comodo Firewall Pro it is a two way firewall and XP's is one way only. I have also Spybot S&D 1.5.1, AVG Antispyware, CA Antivirus & Spyware, Ad-Aware 2007 Free. On top of all that, hpHOSTS and installed in Zoned Out plus Comodo Anti-Malware BOCLEAN 4.25. One is a paid item with 512 MB RAM. Darrell

Nod32 AV paid version is the best choice overall, with Kaspersky, but is made for high skills techs, wait for the upcomming NOD32 3.0 version, but then you have to buy a faster PC too, so lets go back to your question. Now you need aantispyware as Spyboot S&D 1.5 or SpywareBlaster and a second one like AdAware. New Spybot have few glitches but don't be afraid.If you think he's too slow on your PC choose the second, S.Blaster.I wouldn't add anything else, like Comodo BOCLEAN (is a good soft) since both, Spybot and S. Blaster are working in real time, on both, Firefox or IE, except Opera.There is also a latest version of Spyware Terminator, but like with NOD32 2.,Kaspersky,you better know how to configure settings....and keep your Comodo Pro's Component monitor in learning mode. ...Sorry, this was long.

If you surf on XXX related web sites, you better pay for every soft, every update, and upgrades on your PC.

Even before microsoft added them in their trusted security partners. currently installed antispyware are spybot s&d, spyware blaster. I like spyware blaster as prevention antispyware. Have you checked techsupportalert.com? they recommended windows defender and spyware terminator. can you check it out?if you agree? anyway, i would try adaware. definitely would check spyware terminator. really appreciate all your replies Everyone!
just remembered.antivir will only scan up to 100,000 files.the free version, that is. still perfect for me though.

Comodo Firewall have more security pop ups that ZA but is lighter, AntiVir have a sluggish updates,Spybot 1.5 is slower,Spyware Blaster is too quiet.WinDefender and Spyware Terminator are heavier on your RAM,...And I agree with techsupportalert. You could also switch to WinDef + SW-T.Go for them if the speed of your PC stay acceptable.I use WinDefender and SW Terminator myself on my older 2.6GHz Intel and 1G RAM,and AdAware +CCleaner to keep shining the HD (LOL). With the security test, everything shows 100% secure. And WinPatrol is closing my defense.On my second 1.6GHz, 1G RAM, I use S-Bot + SW-T, WinP + CCleaner with of course Comodo FW + AVAST, no AdAware needed since S-Bot have a good scanner. Even my old 400MHz, 256 RAM PC use Comodo FW. Plus AntiVir, S-Bot, WinP+ CCleaner. Never had any trouble...but you have time for coffee breaks between clicks. So S-Bot+SW-B or S-Bot + SW-T, or AAware+ SW-T+WinDef are good choices.And WinPatrol stay a nice add...My opinion. Bob

It won't allow anything on its block list to be installed or run on your computer. It is passive, i.e. it uses no memory/system resources and has no running processes.
SpywareGuard is a companion program to SpywareBlaster. SpywareGuard does actively run in the background and uses a small amount of system resources. It protects against browser hijacks, unwanted changes to your start page or search engine, and other "drive-by" downloads.
Together, these two little utilities give nice protection against a lot of malware and they are both system-friendly and totally free !

I have been using it now for six months with AVAST Home Edition AV. Prior to this I was using Bullguard and ZA and have used Norton in the past. I was always suffering attacks and had two major security incidents with Trojans easily getting through the walls. With Comodo and AVAST, I am extremely happy with no security breaches. The Comodo is lighter on the system and although achieving optimum config took some time, there are no complaints. AVAST's on-access scanner works really well and there are regular virus database updates
