To Shalin - You are a runner?

by RoboticUAV - 8/28/07 5:11 PM

I heard in Monday's episode that you were "taking a break from my training run." So, are you are a runner?

I am, and I'm training for my first half marathon in late October.

If you are a runner, I'd love to know what you're training for, how many miles a week, etc.

TTYL...
Mike

Chicago Marathon, Galloway/Chi-Running method...

by shawnlin - 8/28/07 5:35 PM In reply to: To Shalin - You are a runner? by RoboticUAV

My sis ran the Chicago marathon last year, had a lot of fun and I decided to jump in this year. I'm doing the Jeff Galloway method (great for first-timers, run/walk scheme, http://www.jeffgalloway.com/) with a Chi Running biomechanics technique (http://www.chirunning.com/). I'm told that the way I run, the Chi Running will work for me - it's similar to the Kenyan method (little/no heel strike).

so, 6-8 miles + long run on the weekend. This weekend I'm going for 10 miles in Chicago (goin' home for the long weekend) and I'm REALLY looking forward to having more moderate temperature to run in. I'm behind on my training...but I'm thinking the Texas heat factor will make up for it.

I ran 4yrs of track/field (primarily a high jumper, sometimes hurdles and 200m) and I just haven't kept up consistency in my fitness over the last several years. When I signed up, I think it was a motivating factor of how much time, money, and energy (and food...did I mention I feel chronically hungry most days? ;) I'm investing - I don't want to have to do this again :) Plus, I've always wanted to do a marathon, so it's inspiring and I'm doing it in the city I love and grew up just outside of.

Training in the Texas summer heat sux! I don't like treadmills and it's only below 85deg. outside between 8pm-7:30am...which is another reason I don't care to train for another one...although there is a marathon in Mumbai (formerly Bombay) in January...that'd be fun - I'd get to seem my cousins and run around the city my parents grew up in :) ...hmm...maybe just the half that time...

Best,
Shalin

Chicago for me too

by UKMatt3 - 8/28/07 6:19 PM In reply to: Chicago Marathon, Galloway/Chi-Running method... by shawnlin

I'm doing Chicago (my first marathon) too. It's a little over one month away, so I'm kind of freaking out. I've only been running about a year and a half, so I'm not sure how it will go but I'm shooting for 4 hours.

I run three days a week; 3-5 on Tuesday, 6-10 on Thursday, and 12-20 on Sunday. My training program had me build up from 10 miles per week to 25 miles per week over about 16 weeks.

Same goes for me - if you have any questions feel free to ask. I actually have a little bit of a background in this because I've worked for an elite running store for about 3 years, so I've seen all kinds of problems runners have.

have fun man...I'll be riiight behind ya...

by shawnlin - 8/28/07 6:57 PM In reply to: Chicago for me too by UKMatt3

I'm shooting for ~5.5hrs.

yeah...I'm kinda freakin' out too...but I ran 8miles in ~90 min last Saturday so that was comfortable to me. ~10-12 minute/miles

say, do you use a pedometer or take splits? I extrapolated the 8 mile time so that I'd get 10% slower each 8 mile segment and it came out to about 5.5 hrs...so I'm happy. my Asics feel pretty good too.

e-mail me if you want to meet up.

Best,
Shalin

26.2

by UKMatt3 - 8/29/07 6:58 PM In reply to: have fun man...I'll be riiight behind ya... by shawnlin

What is your longest up to? Mine has been 16 so far and I don't feel like that has been long enough. I was planning on 21 last Sunday, but my 21st birthday was two days before, so I wasn't detoxed enough to pull that off.

Yeah, we can definitely meet up and maybe snag a picture for BOL.

Btw - http://www.marathonmovie.com/

</Boring running talk>

I use the Nike+ Nano to track distances/pace. It's sufficiently accurate for anything under a 10k (6.2mi), but once you get up into longer runs, it can be a mile or two off. I'd recommend it for anyone just getting into running because it's cool to see your pace graphed, and to look back at your total distance climb up - it's a nice confidence booster.

Oh, and I'm buying a new video iPod next week as a reward for doing this beast.

Hey if there some people who use nike+, maybe we can have a Nike+ challenge for BOL listeners.

OMG it's going to be a hot marathon...check the weather...

by shawnlin - 10/4/07 3:15 PM In reply to: Chicago for me too by UKMatt3

I dunno if we'll be able to meet up before, but feel free to e-mail me afterwards if you'll be in town on Monday.

I bought some warm-up pants, gloves, and a lightweight poncho in the case it was going to be cold and rainy on Sunday - I don't think I'll need them...

I'll try to remember and post my bib # for tracking...don't expect much excitement though...I'll be at it for 5+ hours ;)

Best,
Shalin

That's great!

by RoboticUAV - 8/31/07 7:42 PM In reply to: Chicago Marathon, Galloway/Chi-Running method... by shawnlin

Wow, thats pretty awesome that you're doing a full marathon! Like I said, I'm training for my first half marathon. My longest run so far has been 5.1 miles, which I did in 54 minutes. I actually seriously started running in the middle of July, but have been training and running in 5Ks since May.

I hope you have a blast at the Chicago Marathon, and finish safely! The Chicago 26.2 is on my list once I get a half marathon or two under my belt. Living in Indianapolis, the drive wouldn't be unreasonable.

To UKMatt3, I have an iPod Nano, and have been considering the Nike+ kit. Do you use the Nike shoes, or use a shoe pouch?

Post 10 of 16

No Nike!

by UKMatt3 - 9/1/07 4:33 AM In reply to: That's great! by RoboticUAV

I use a pouch which I would definitely recommend. Being an accelerometer, it doesn't really matter where in the shoe the piece is.

*Disclosure: I work for New Balance* haha, but I think I'm being unbiased.

I've tried two Nike shoes (one was the pegasus, and I can't remember what the other was) and I ended up switching to other shoes after about a month. Those two were even two of their better shoes, and I think that the shoes with the Nike + slot are some of the lower quality ones.

If you're looking into a pair, I'd recommend Brooks, Asics, or New Balance (#'s 700+). When you go though, make sure either yourself or someone helping you figures out whether you (over)pronate/neutral/supinate, and that you buy your shoe accordingly. It will save you a lot of injury.

(NT) I use Asics (good value), but New Balance are really nice...

So, how'd it go?

That heat sounded pretty bad, hope everyone made it through safely!

Ick

by UKMatt3 - 10/7/07 10:24 PM In reply to: So, how'd it go? by RoboticUAV

Yeah, I was one of the 300+ that got rocked by the heat. I had trained about 9 months, ate all the right things, did a 21 mile run and a 22 mile run which is about what is recommended, drank lots of water both the day before and the day of, so I felt as ready as possible. I had wanted to run the race in 4:00, but since the heat was going to be an issue, I dropped down to about a 4:30 pace, but somewhere around mile 10 I passed out from heat exhaustion and was unconscious for about 30 minutes and ended up in Lincoln Park hospital for about 7 hours getting pumped with fluids.

I'm pretty pissed because I really did everything right for the time that I was shooting for, but because of the weather, my body couldn't take it. I really didn't have any warning either, I don't remember much of the race, but it must have happened within a mile or less because I remember feeling completely fine at mile 9. It was just a combination of 88 degree weather, very humid, and 45000 people packed shoulder to shoulder creating just a ball of heat. I had a seeded start at corral D, but couldn't make it up there by the start, so ended up running with the masses. Oh, and the first two stops were out of water/gatorade, which is ridiculous for today.

Boo Chicago.

Glad to hear you were taken care of...

by shawnlin - 10/8/07 6:04 AM In reply to: Ick by UKMatt3

My cousin ran it in 5:17 - he was going for a 4hr pace...just shows you how the heat and lack of available fluids can force you to forgo even semi-lofty goals...

Matt, I'm SUPER glad you're out of emergency care...are you still in Chicago? I'm here until tomorrow morning - my e-mail is in my CNET profile if you've got time to chat.

Against your story - it seems feeble to talk about my performance - I didn't finish 26.2 either 'cause I was rerouted per the public safety concerns. the organizers are definitely going to have to answer what happened, what didn't happen, when did things happen, and why. But most importantly, what's up with the totally inadequate logistics of getting fluids available on a hot day - I think they had enough fluids for a cold day. I'd rather they start 30-60 min. earlier at the very least.
The reroute happened after, as I heard, the hospitals were about to overflow and water ran out.

Chicago is usually a great city to run in - the organizers heads are gonna roll...but also there's going to be some pointed questions about the service capacity of the city's hospitals...

Best,
Shalin

p.s. if it makes you feel any better - I had a bad flare up of back pain that allowed for only ~2-3hrs of "sleep"...at mile 3 I texted my sister "Neeeed sleep"... although, even if i was going to run my regular pace, I would've gotten cut-off/rerouted any how 'cause it still wouldn't have been that fast given the slower pace I'd had to run because of the heat.
