I use Outlook Express and when I get what appears to be spam but I am uncertain if it is or not, I will right click on the email, click properties, click details then message source. This will allow you to read the sender and the body without exposeing your computer. I have not, to my knowledge, been burned by using this method to check something out in order to decide "good" or "bad".
On my ancient pop mail account, now filtered through SpamArrest, maybe one a day makes it to the inbox. Viewing the refuse bin, some 200 a day are tossed. This is a "whitelist" system, which has its advantages.
On my Yahoo account, still less than 10 a day, which I think is an awesome result on a rules and experienced based system. I assume that they use the "label as Spam" command to get some idea of new spammers.
On my work email, less than one per day.
Gmail spam filter does a great job for me. I get less than 1-2 spam messages in my inbox per week, while gmail pushes about 50-day to my spam folder. I use the net extensively, but am careful about "registering" or attempting to "win" contests. Haven't found anything better than gmail's filter, for my situation at least.
I shop quite a lot on Ebay, and that may be how spammers get my e-mail address; I don't know. I used to do the "unsubscribe" thing, until someone told me that by unsubscribing, I may just be letting spammers know that there's a "live", warm body (me) who is doing the unsubscribing. What I do now, is just delete all the spam without opening the "junk" mail. Although, there are times when I was expecting an e-mail from a friend, and it somehow, very mysteriously ended up in the junk mail receptacle. So, when I have time, I'll scroll through all the e-mails in the Junk box without opening 99% of them. I only open the ones which might be something I wanna see. Do people actually make a living out of sending junk-mails to everyone? There's so much internet garbage that it's just gotta be a full-time job!
My ISP use McAfee Postini to filter what is can based on my e-mail filter settings. Even with this, 10-20 Spammers get through and the I have to use IncrediMail's Spam blocker, and bouncer to finish the job. If I am not watchful and forget and use the "Open Next e-mail" option, I have opened a "SPAM" e-mail and my PCTools Firewall did a good job and stopped any outbound traffic. PCTools Spyware Doctor does a good job of keeping out the Spyware notifiers of what I am doing.
I get no spam in my inbox at all.
Cloudmark Safety bar is based on Human intelligence. When I block a piece of spam, I block for 1.5 million other people. and likewise. IT is mushc better than say barracuda which uses bayesian filters and a small group of in house blockers
I don't receive any spam on my computer, but my mailbox does receive on average 450/day. This is then cleared by by spam blocker (www.clearmymail.com).
First, never, ever use work email when signing up on web sites, ordering products, etc. Often work email environments don't have the spam protection that larger email organizations offer.
I use a Yahoo account as my personal email for which I pay about $20 per year. The Yahoo Mail Plus service. These guys ROCK when it comes to filtering Spam. I usually get 35 to 40 spams messages per day neatly tucked into my spam folder. I review it once per week as very, very rarely there might be message from a known vendor that I actually want to see. However, the yahoo accuracy is uncanny. I'd peg it at 99.5% or greater.
I highly recommend yahoo or something like it to keep spam to a minimum in your email box. It is well worth $20 per year.
I use the rules to block spam. When I start receiving spam emails again, I look for a common word and add that to the rules. Or I right click and send to junk mail file, which automatically marks email from this sender as junk. When I see a repeated @something, I just block all emails from @something. I get at least 50-100 junk emails a day and at least 90% go to my junk email file to just be deleted. I have several different email accounts that all go through Microsoft Office 2003. And I didn't have to download any extra software.
I use Thunderbird for my email client, I love it's spam filter options. If something does get past the filter, I look in the subject line or body for some key words that will send things straight to the junk folder (to be deleted automatically after a short time where I can quickly scan it for any legit emails that might have slipped in. The filters also help me route emails from friends into their own folder, business related emails into their own folder and "bakon" email into its own folder. On top of all that, I keep three different email accounts: One for registering on websites as a requirement for using services or posting to blogs and forums, one for my bills and services I sign up for, and one personal one. This way, I can pretty much tell who's giving out my address when I sign up for something and a certain account suddenly begins receiving new spam.
I get very little spam at work but at home it's another story. I was holding my own with just 5-10 a day until I purchased, yes purchased, a Casino Poker game at Office Depot. I figured an "off-the-shelf" poker game associated with the name "Hoyle" would be safe enough to learn to play before betting any serious money.
It would seem the entire existance of this game is to get you to register. As soon as I registered my spam went up to over 100 per day. Most of it is Casnio and on-line gambling related but there is a good deal of the other, sexual, weight loss, etc. thrown in.
I have tried some filters but it was taking more time to maintain and update the filters than it takes to just delete the stuff. The other problem with filters is they often grab info you actually wanted. I was spending time deleting what the filter missed and retrieving what the filter took by mistake. I hate to admit it but every day I go through my ned e-mail and delete the spam manually. I've taken the perspective that its just a cost of using the Web.
My ISP, using Postini, removes almost 100% of the spam coming to my inbox. It also removes 1-2 messages that I want to read.
With Postini it is easy enough to review the spam, deliver what I want to read and permanently delete the remainder. Takes all of 5 minutes.
I have Out.Exp. 6.0 thru Earthlink. In past when I rec'd a spam, I hi-lited the email, clicked "Message" on upper toolbar, then clicked "Block Sender". Slowly over approx 5 months ALL spam stopped, and I've had NONE for a good 6 - 7 months since!
Gotta' give some credit to Earthlink though, as they have an anti-spam tool you can set for low, med, high, and it "learns" what you delete and block over time. Guess it works. (Best of all it's free!)
At first junk mail was a big problem, they wanted to give me my winnings from lotteries, sell me cheap pharmaceuticals, give me a new mortgage at reduced rates.
I first started blocking the adresses, the junk that made it past this
step i would try to open and unsiscribe. My next plan of attack would be to adding them all to a list in my email, instead of deleting them, i could forward all the email back to all of them and i didn't care where they came from, aslong as there wasnt any personal info or just general spam mail. They soon took me off there list's ..everyone happy. If you have to change your email, it is easy enough to go to live hotmail. Its free and you get 5 gig of storage with alot of extras. I have been using hotmail for years and i am very happy with it,and if you have to change your email again it's not a big hassle. Remember to give them enough rope to hang themselves(they will).
Send everything back to them, this also works with snail mail from the post office. I hope that i have helped, and not just rambled on.
