CELL PHONES IN THE UNITED STATES SUCK AND I AM TIRED OF IT!!

by skzunk71 - 10/3/07 6:57 PM

I AM A GADGET NUT AND LOVE VISITING CNET FOR ALL THE LATEST PRODUCTS AND REVIEWS. BUT TO BE PERFECTLY HONEST IT JUST PISSES ME OFF WHEN EVERYDAY I SEE THE PHONES THAT ARE BEING RELEASED THAT ARE GSM BASED. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GIVE ME A BREAK ALREADY!! WHY IS IT SO HARD TO MAKE A CDMA VERSION OF THESE PHONES. I MEAN EVERY FREAKIN PHONE THAT SAMSUNG AND HTC HAVE BEEN RELEASING HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLE. YOU HAVE THE HTC TOUCH DUAL, KAISER, P6500, SAMSUNG F700 ETC... I CAN GO ON FOR DAYS. WE ARE GETTING DESTROYED OVER HERE, AND IF IT DOES COME OUT IN THE STATES THE CARRIERS ARE AT&T AND T-MOBILE (GSM CARRIERS). LETS BE REAL FOLKS THEY SUCK IN THE STATES!!! ITS FACT!! YOU GET BETTER COVERAGE WITH CDMA SO WHY AREN'T THESE PHONES BEING RELEASED HERE? I WILL PAY $600 TO $800 FOR THESE PHONES. JUST LOOK AT THE PHONES ON THE VERIZON AND SPRINT WEBSITES, ONE WORD PEOPLE.. PATHETIC!! THE AT&T TILT IS TO BE RELEASED ANY DAY NOW, GREAT PHONE, I LIVE IN N.Y 50 MILES FROM THE CITY. GUESS WHAT? AT&T DOES NOT HAVE SERVICE WHERE I RESIDE. ARE YOU F**KING KIDDING ME? NEW YORK, NO SERVICE IN NEW YORK??? WHAT A JOKE. CAN SOMEONE MAKE SENSE OF THIS TO ME? WHY CAN'T THESE COMPANYS JUST MAKE 2 VERSIONS OF THESE PHONES? DO THEY KNOW HOW MUCH MONEY THEY ARE LOSING?

Calm down

The cell phone industry is what it is and no complaning will change that. Part of the issue is exclusive contracts w/ manufacturers to prevent other carriers from getting the same exact handsets and the second major reason is FCC regulation that regulates what phones can be released by each carrier and when they are available for release.

Think of the iPhone, currently At&t has an exclusive 5 year contract in the US and no other carrier can provide service on that device (unless unlocked and only w/ T-mobile). Wish it were different but those are the facts.

Also, don't forget that no carrier guarantees coverage anywhere. Sometimes reception is limited by line of sight to the tower or by the construction of the building you are in.

skzunk71 - Justifiably upset

It is a well know fact that ALL the coolest phones start off in either the Asian market or Europe. WHY???? Maybe if we all started screaming loudly it might be heard.

I have had Verizion for years ie CDMA love service

by heritage10 - 10/6/07 7:26 PM In reply to: Calm down by birdmantd

I go to china I can buy really cool phones not that I can read the screen but it looks great(an its CDMA).

Year after year (8 years +) I have had phones that have features turned off, no games and the network performance is starting to fail. What we need is new Laws that limit service contracts that way the two players(USA) start fighting with prices and phones and service. Verizon brags to other cell phone companies that they have the worst phones. Does Verizon really want a customer that’s going for the latest technology? I think not they want your mom or dad that will always pay the bill on time and never change their plan. So suck it up

Chill just a little,, come on over to Alltel

by slimsss2 - 10/5/07 8:57 PM In reply to: CELL PHONES IN THE UNITED STATES SUCK AND I AM TIRED OF IT!! by skzunk71

Come over to CMDA/EVDO and get some luv from Alltel. You are correct the coverage is excellent, the data transfer on EVDO is just as fast as my DSL thru qwest, the associates out here are pleasent to deal with, Life is good and so is the cell reception.
Skzunk71 now do yourself a favor and slowly push the caps lock to the off position,, have some caffine and get a Alltel account..You will thank me when your blood pressure gets around 120/70.
And yes friends come to my(rural)house with their GSM phones and they have to use my landline or borrow my RAZR to hook up to the outside world 8 miles away.......YOU are welcome

First of all the caps are off for all the sensitive folks out there that for some reason caps irritate them. Second, the phones that are on the alltel website are so impressive, if you are looking for something that resembles Fisher Price's My First Cell Phone. Last, when I enter my zip code I get this message " Sorry we do not have service in this area code" I do not live in Canada I live 60 miles from the city. Orange County, New York. Sprint and Verizon work excellent in this area in addtion to the city. I am not complaining about the cdma coverage, I am complaining about the phone options available to us. I am Sprint customer and love the service I just want to have the option to have some of the hottest phones out there to go along with my service.

Skzunk...... I completely understand how you feel....

I come from Asia where mobile phones are sold separately from the providers. You go to mobile phone stores to buy a phone, not to give out your Social Security number and sign a binding contract! In other words, you get to choose your coolest phone, and plug in your existing providre's SIM card. No subsidies, but no contract renewals and, yeah, no need for unlocking either. This difference in subscriber model is what actually makes the choice of phones more restrictive in the U.S. The subsidy model in the U.S. comes with this nasty one-year, or lately even worse two-year, contracts, and to add insult to injury, they even lock the phones so you can't even use it with other providers even if you still honor your contract! The appearance of having "FREE" phones does have a big appeal on the consumers, but when you come to think of it, this model is a make-believe system.

In any case, mobile rural residents can begin using T-Mobile and get service at home as long as they have a Wi-Fi connection. Watch for the growing number of cool Wi-Fi phones, such as those from BlackBerry (Curve) as well as NOkia and Samsung. These phones tap into Wi-Fi using what they call "UMA" connection. So once you get within range, the UMA connection takes over and you're in business.
I think this "UMA" mode is going to be one of the ways of the future phones, especially as an alternative to 3G, the deployment of which is VERY slow in the U.S. I think AT&T also has begun selling a UMA-enabled phone, although I'm not so sure which one.

This was my point and more! OMGGGGGGG That just puts the candle on the cake. Imagine going to a "PHONE STORE" and buying exactly what you want THEN adding your service. What a concept and why are we in the states so limited and tied to contracts? Is this mind-boggling to anyone else? AND what's more MBling is that we put up with it!

All you have to do is check out Bang & Olfson's cell phone -- a European phone that can be used here in the US. You pay through the nose for it -- but what a phone!!!!
