Scammed on Ebay

by pflynn - 9/28/07 8:23 PM In reply to: I got scammed on eBay, what can I do now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Go to PlanetFeedback.com and send a complaint letter to Ebay. I used this before and it seems to get results.

Getting your money back

by karlmd - 9/29/07 12:59 AM In reply to: I got scammed on eBay, what can I do now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Jim,

This is coming from my personal experience. 4 years ago I was in the same boat, I bought a cellphone for 180 dollars from a seller with enough positive feedbacks. Early on it was easy to communicate with him through email, until of course I noticed that it was taking some time for the package to arrive (I paid by money transfer). That was the time that he also stopped replying to my emails. I used ebay's resolution feature and another resolution site (the name escapes me at the moment) but to no avail. I was ready to accept the reality that I was never going to see my money nor the phone until my friend told me not to take it sitting down. Per his advice, I sent the seller another email, this time telling him that I was now hiring the services of a lawyer to take care of the case. He promptly replied saying that he did send the package. But as my friend told me, until the package is actually in the buyer's hands, then it's still the responsibility of the seller. The outcome of this story is that I did get my money back.

Paypal Relief

by jimsberg - 9/29/07 9:38 AM In reply to: I got scammed on eBay, what can I do now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Had a problm getting any response from a seller in France, submitted the case to Ebay who turned it over to Paypal, since my payment was thru Paypal, and got a refund within one week. Not a major dollar amount but the refund was funded thru the seller's Paypal account.Had another deadbeat seller in England, sent the camera back with the understanding that he would refund the price paid. Never heard from him again and couldn't use the dispute mechanism because he did string me along beyond the timeperiod available for disputes. Lessons: get on the record with your dispute ASAP, know that you have a problem proving returns were made to foreign countries and since returns can take weeks you will likely run out of dispute options. I had no problem with a Russiaan seller on a trade transaction even 'tho my shipment to him took 2 months to reach him. If you have returns, use tracking and delivery confirmation on all returns, understanding that the extra cost can run the return freight costs sky high; if it's a less than $60 transaction, forget it on most foreign sales. Domestic sales seem to have far fewer problems.

all advertisements , e-mails , of ebay, etc. to be treated as pop-ups and to be blocked from flashing on pc screens. Similar treatment for e-mails, lottery results, free offers, free gifts.

by magenta666 - 10/4/07 1:40 AM In reply to: I got scammed on eBay, what can I do now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

A friend of mine spent £160 on a gift for is son and he never got the item, he informed PayPal as that is what he used to pay it by and PayPal sided with the seller and he never got his money back :-(

And i have had the same sort of problems with going throu the eBay claims as they say "yes we will give you your money back ( -£15 to pay for the claim ) as well have sided with the buyer", and i am still waiting for the money after 2 YEARS.

And if PayPal sided with the buyer you still minght not get your money back if the selled has got no money in his PayPal account rofl....

Ebay should be avoided at all costs

I am the Managing Partner for a law firm in Denver, Colorado. I purchased an item for a Christmas present four years ago on ebay. The "Power Seller" said the item would arrive within ten days by UPS. I kept copies of all communications. On day seven I emailed to check on the tracking number and received a message that USPS didn't provide one. I checked the seller's site and she had switched out her shipping method during the previous week. I contacted her and said to cancel the order since the Post Office couldn't get it from California to Colorado before January.
The lady started quoting the Uniform Commercial Code to me which said she had thirty days just to ship the item. I tried to contact ebay and paypal and got nothing but hot air. Since time was an issue I took the next logical step. We are a multi-state practice and I contacted our office in Los Angeles.
One of our associates tracked the woman to her home and showed up to ask for the money or the item. She tried to stonewall him so he came back with a Sheriff's deputy. My account was credited at that time.

I was lucky in my choice of careers; this "Power Seller" had a history of this behavior that was buried by ebay. She got her fabulous ratings the same way all of the other sellers get them; she and they bought small items from each other and then rated themselves through the roof. If only non-sellers were allowed to do the ranking it might help but there is always a way to game the system. Buying from ebay is like buying from the Mafia; everyone is going to tell you that a fellow seller is a great person; otherwise you might actually be able to tell who the few honest people are.

Ebay

by synergy#1 - 10/7/07 10:20 AM In reply to: Ebay should be avoided at all costs by a155mm

I have more than 150 positive things to say about Ebay. But as with everything I did have 1 bad experience but I got my money back frm Ebay...I continue to buy from Ebay and as long as we try to "Shop Smart" we will be happy...

I look for the Ebay "guarantee" on every item we bid to win..If everyone did the same it maybe a better place to shop as Online buying becomes the smart way to shop...Just don't give "ANYONE" that emails you any of your information including your correct email or Ebay call sign...Paypal "does not" email people for their information. Period...

I am sorry you had a bad experience but if you are a real lawyer you would know that you have more avenues to go other than litigation process...You see, I believe less than 1/4 of the things peole tell me via email...Good luck..

buying on -line safely

What are the names of credit cards with buyers protections? Thanks Bev

Credit cards

by a155mm - 10/6/07 9:21 AM In reply to: buying on -line safely by beverleyjean

The level of protection varies by card. Two of the main issuers you can Goggle are MBNA and HSBC. They are the parent companies for a ton of credit cards, and should be able to list which ones have protection of some kind. Study the protection carefully, it is not always what they say it is.

EBAY SCAM

by 1man woman - 2/18/08 4:23 AM In reply to: I got scammed on eBay, what can I do now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Oh believe me, I know exactly how you feel only I was scammed $800 on an LCD tv. I waited too long to open a dispute, I trusted him since it was the second tv that I ordered and I received the first one. I went to all the websites that can possibly help me, i.e internet cop, ebay's help/support, paypal, etc. I was fortunate to have made the purchase with my credit card. I opened a dispute with my card company. I'm not sure if they all do this, but it's worth a try. I gave them the transaction date, item description, and details of the transaction. I don't know what they did, but they refunded my money, and the seller obviously was informed somehow because he wrote me asking me to close my latest dispute because he's sent out a new one and "if I want the tracking number to let him know". I said "No way, Jose!" , and sure enough the tv NEVER came. Good thing I didn't believe him this time. Most credit card companies insure the item you purchase on your card. I did mine on the net because it was available. If you're unable to, try contacting them directly. And, I would give it a shot even if it was just an account transfer and not a credit card transaction. I hope this helps.

Always ask for delivery confirmation.

by Personal Opinion - 2/23/08 7:26 AM In reply to: I got scammed on eBay, what can I do now? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I lost $240 from one of my first purchases from Ebay when I first began, I called, sent emails and she kept telling me it was on it's way. By the 3rd week when the item did not show up, I contacted paypal and filed a dispute. I will never close a dispute unless the situation is resolved to best of both (buyer and seller's) parties satisfaction. The one thing I have trained myself in requesting is Delivery Confirmation. It is a requirement for sending me a package; the seller must purchase deliver confirmation for anything being sent to me. I use it as proof that the purchase was sent out; I don't want to hear that it got lost in the mail because that's why that tracking number exist. It will slow up the delivery of your item but only by a day or two and it's worth it. It's like a cheap insurance policy that throws the ball back into the sellers court for them to resolve the situation. There is a little box when you pay for anything that states you are leave instructions for the seller about shipping the product, well my instructions are if you accept the payment you must send the item with delivery confirmation. I have had one incident where someone did not send with delivery confirmation and tried telling me that they sent it, well they had to replace the item. I was sure they never sent it out to begin with but they had to because it was either that or my money back. For my first theft I did get my money back, paypal issued me a credit and went after her themselves. I guess they had or it would have been them and Amex and I have buyer protection through Amex.
