I know that the same virus may not be detected by all antivirus programs. Given that the number of viruses/worms is growing so fast, why the vendors are still working independently in terms of collecting virus samples? Isn't it a lot more efficient for the vendors to share such information?
Thanks!

"They're not working together, and because they're not working together, they're putting all of us at risk," says Alan Paller, research director of SANS Institute, a Washington-based Internet-security think tank and training center.

You got it right. But these companies are in a life and death struggle among themselves and now Microsoft.

If the AV companies found a way to make money by sharing, and the sharing meant that they didn't lose any competitive edge, there's a chance that they might. Is anyone holding their breathe?
Like every business, certain things are kept private. Otherwise we would not have business and everyone would work for the same company.
I know that in a perfect world, when one body finds a serious problem and a solution to that problem, it would be passed between organisations. BUT that will never happen whilst ever there is money to be made.
Also, it might be possibe that when a serious problem is found, the excited people who find the solution release it immediately in order that the likes of us might benefit. Maybe, behind the scene it is forwarde to another organisation after it is released with the priority given to the release of the solution.
