I am looking for a good class to learn Adobe Photoshop CS in the Boston, MA area.
I looked at several of them and their descriptions looked inconvincing with the instructor not having the necessary credentials. Any suggestions?
Thanks
it kinda depends on WHY you want to learn Photoshop? I teach online, but mostly for scrapbookers. I also teach in the community here in TN, and I do variations of the class depending on whom I'm teaching - my DH and I do it together and we have a variation for photographers, for regular amateur snappers, and for scrapbookers. I also teach for scrapbook designers. So don't discount creds, just make sure they have some background in the kind of things you want to do. You can also learn a lot online, I like some of the video tuts sites, because I can run it over and over and learn at my own speed!! Wish I was in Boston, sorry can't help ya there!
Your post wasn't clear about the learning level you want. If you know Photoshop, and want a good CS 1-day seminar, you're in business. There is one on Oct 4, 2007 in Boston for $99. It's conducted by Scott Kelby, editor and publisher of Photoshop User magazine and president of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals.
For details, go to http://www.kelbytraining.com/?page=product&id=74
Thanks for your pointer. I am a Photoshop beginner and rather go to a beginner seminar than to a power one. In addition I still have CS2 I have not upgraded to CS3. May be I should use some self paced DVD classes for beginner CS2. Does anybody has a pointer to something like that?
Thanks again for the advice. I certainly will be interested in Kelby's power lectures after I learned the ropes
Sorry, I skimmed the messages too quickly. You have CS2, not CS1. You may still be able to get Classroom In A Book for CS2 either from Adobe or a Half-Price Bookstore in your area, or even a regular bookstore.
You want to make sure that your instructor is an Adobe Certified Instructor, meaning not only he/she had to take the test to become an Adobe certified expert (ACE) but they also have teaching credentials. also you might want to check for an Adobe certified training center in your area.
Scott Kelby is a great guru, but not really for beginners.
You can also purchase the "Adobe classroom in a book", a book printed and published by Adobe.
I'm sure that if you look for a photoshop community in your area you can find people willing to help you out for free.
Many thanks for the advice
I've had good results with classroom instruction, Adobe's Classroom in a Book, and Lynda.com. I recently upgraded from Photoshop 7 to CS3 and received a complimentary 30-day trial subscription with Lynda.com that has a lot of online tutorials that are great for a jump-start to learning the program.
I took a couple of classroom-oriented courses on Photoshop, but they were too expedited. My favorite is the Adobe Classroom In A Book series because you get a CD/DVD with the book and it is very thorough. Plus you can go back and study certain sections. You can also skip around to only those features you need.
The Lynda.com website is only $25 a month (can be canceled at any time); $250 annually; or $375 for premium users (one-time charge). I assume the latter is for a lifetime membership. The latter is the only one that give you the files associated with the course.
With Lynda.com, I found it useful because I wanted a jump start with Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and Encore CS3 which I had just upgrade to. Neither had a Classroom In A Book available.
If you don't have a lot of free time, I would highly suggest the Classroom In A Book series for Photoshop. You mentioned that you have the CS version--I'm assuming CS1. If you had Version 7, I would send you mine for free (excellent condition with CD). I don 't know if there's much difference between the two, but I jumped from 7 to CS3 so I wouldn't know.
Thanks for the advice. I have CS2 and don't know if it is worth upgrading to CS3 I am just an amateure photographer who thinks to get more seriouse about his tools. I am not in the business of photography at least at this time.
I just enjoy the outdoors and the memories of nature's great art
The advantages of buying an upgrade to Photoshop are (1) you get more tools, (2) if you buy a new book it will discuss new features.
Photoshop CS and CS2 were big jumps and worth it. CS3 isn't that big a change. It reformats the screen to be a little better, makes selection easier, better layer blending, and a few others. It's probably not worth the money for the casual user. Of course, if you can get an upgrade cheap on eBay -- then go for it.
Thanks for the good advice. I was suspecting that is the case but was not sure. It will save me some $ and time. For me the goal is to become proficient in CS2 and have fun taking pictutes and perfecting them whatever that means.
sipos, Name them. I am from Boston.
I only use Photoshop V-7 daily.
Do you know anything about Adobe Photoshop at all?
The tutorials from CS are sometimes good. Other than that you can join the University of MA.
They have a wonderful program.
Any one over 65 years of age: All the programs are FREE!
How about that! I will qualify for this.
Any one interested in a free education from UMASS? Just sign up!
Under 65? just sign up and pay the cost! Good schooling.
That's my suggestion.
Other than that, you can contact me by going to my email address under my profile.
I will respond to you and give you more information.
Thanks, and by the way, since this is a new forum on CNET;
WELCOME and post often. Why didn't you just post to the Graphics Forum?
Or, is the Graphic's Forum dead in the water forever?
STRANGE! One never knows.
I wish I knew!?

Thanks The idea about University of MA is great especially that it will be free for me. Now I have to find a good course at one of the campuses near me
sipos,
Sign up! I am thinking about the 2008 season myself.
Just watch out for all those 20 year-olds.
You cannot keep up with them. So smart most of them.
On the other hand, maybe the course will be interactive and the younger students will listen to us
older F--ts! :·)
