iPod Touch or iPhone???
by anisemurphy - 9/26/07 1:29 PMI need some feedback. I'd really like to get either the iPod Touch or iPhone. Since the iPod Touch (16gb) and the iPhone (8gb) are the same price, I'm torn as to which one to get.
iPod Touch Pros:
The iPod Touch would only cost me $375 + tax and any WiFi fees if I'm not close to a free hotspot. It has a bigger memory and no monthly cell service fee.
iPod Touch Cons:
No cell phone service or data service. I'd still have to carry my pre-paid cell around in addition to the iPod Touch.
iPhone Pros:
Cell phone service and data plan. No need to carry second device around.
iPhone Cons:
The iPhone would cost $399 + tax + 2 years of monthly service from AT&T AND WiFi fees if I'm not close to a free hotspot. An additional $1440 plus tax in monthly service fees on top of the cost of the phone and it has a smaller memory.
Since my pre-paid cell plan seems to be working fairly well for me (I paid a mere $120 for all of 2006), I'm hesitant to go the iPhone route since it will cost about $2000 over the next two years.
In a perfect world, I'd like to have a 16gb iPhone with a prepaid plan, but I'm more likely to see Babe fly past my window first.
What wifi fees?

Think of it as a utility bill. My touch 16 GB has been shipped & likely will arrive tomorrow. I wouldn't pay for the phone bill AT&T is charging iPhone Users & I don't like their technology (I've been a Verizon User since `97). Too many dropped calls from their Users.
The main attraction/purpose of the iPod touch is to funnel Users to the ITMS. It doesn't yet have enough memory to satisfy the serious iPod User, making you rely on refreshing your tunes from your computer's iTunes. But you can load MP3 tunes into iTunes on your computer & load them onto your touch. And you can do email, movies, & maps, etc.
The main attraction of the iPhone is to funnel iPod lovers' $$$ to AT&T. It's the 'buzz' that attracts people. But next year, it gets serious w/3G, I'm sure. These same people probably don't care about the cost of driving a new car off of the lot (20% depreciation+). Just wait for the 2nd gen. iPhone.
Anyways, that's my take on the differences. The touch is an iPod w/Wi-Fi. The iPhone is a cellular phone with video, music player, Wi-Fi, & a ridiculous phone bill.

I forgot to mention that we have had the same features as 'phone bill', on 2 phones for $59/mo., no roaming charges, clear call quality, no dropped calls (on our end), and almost never out of a service area, for over 2 years. IAW, $29.50/phone. Compare for yourself, based on this data.
Of course, this is NOT for iPhones, but I will also have an iPod touch 16Gb w/no phone bill.

Understand that I am not a schill for AT&T but in this neck of the woods, a data plan adds $40 to the phone bill.
It used to cost that, I think it still does, for service with AT&T without the iPhone. That would be for something like a Blackberry.

A data plan would cost more (my point) and not be available for the GSM iPhone on Verizon. This is why, along with the excellent Verizon experience we have had, we chose to go with an iPod touch 16 GB & a black iPod classic 160 GB for her. We use GPS-capable Audiovox phones. We have a 4 GB nano & a 3G 40 GB iPod but have never bought anything from the iTunes store. We have 4,200 tunes/books recorded to choose from in iTunes.
There will be a 3G iPhone available next Spring, I'm sure. I don't know when/if there will be a CDMA digital iPhone-capable model released, but I am sure that Apple will want to get into that market very soon.
